Visit the Pacific Ocean!

By Anais

Last weekend, I went whale watching with my family. It was windy, and sometimes the mist from the ocean got us a little wet. Please watch my slide show to see some of the wildlife in the Pacific Ocean!

Visit the Pacific Ocean! on PhotoPeach

Here are some diagrams of baleen whales

and toothed whales.

  2. Dear Anais,

I really liked your report on the Pacific Ocean! Did you have a good time when you went? Where did you go whale watching? My favorite type of whale is an orca. They look so beautiful when they swim.

    Sincerely,

    Ali the Horselover

  3. Dear Mrs. Yollis' Class,

I enjoyed the whale diagrams. They were very interesting. It does, and probably always will remind me of when I went whale watching in Catalina.

    Keep up the good posts!

    Sincerely,
    Michael

  4. Dear Anais,

I liked your story about your whale watching adventure. I haven't gone whale watching, but I might go someday. I have a question for you, what is your favorite whale?

    Sincerely,
    Matt (from Mrs. Coro's class)

  5. @ Healy,

Thank you for your comment on my post.

You asked what kind of whale I saw. Gray whales were the ones I saw. They looked covered with barnacles.

    Thanks,
    Anais

  6. Dear Anais,

That looked like a very fun adventure you had last weekend. The dolphin picture must have been exciting to capture.

What kind of boat did you embark on?

    Sincerely,
    Sydney and Ben

  7. @ Ben and Sydney,

Wow! Exceptional vocabulary AND you two inserted some HTML code appropriately. Impressive!

I agree with your analysis of the dolphin picture. It is outstanding.

    Mrs. Yollis

P.S. See me on Monday about the hyperlink: Ben and Sydney.

  8. Dear Anais,

Firs of all, on your slide show, you asked what that was in the water, and I agree with you. I do think it is a sea otter. Did you enjoy whale watching? Was this your first time going?

    Your friend,
    Kayla :)

  9. Dear Anais,

I really like the PhotoPeach video you made with Mrs. Yollis. Once, while I was in Hawaii I went to snorkel with sea turtles and fish. When I was on the boat we actually saw dolphins. When you went whale watching what kind of boat did you go on?

    Sincerely,
    Nick

  10. Dear Ali,
Thanks for all the questions that you asked. I had the best time with my family on this trip. First, we drove to Ventura Harbor.
Then, we embarked on a boat in the marina. We went out to sea, around the Channel Islands. We saw Pacific Grey Whales this time of year. The Orcas swim south in June.
I am sure they are very beautiful.

    Love,
    Anais

  11. Dear Ben and Sydney,

Thank you for your question. I am not sure what kind of boat we were on. It had an upstairs viewing area and a downstairs. It was very windy and cold. It was an awesome trip. One day I would love to visit the same area in a kayak. Maybe the sea lions would come right up and join me!

    Love,
    Anais

  12. G'day Anais,
Your post reminded me of the time I went whale watching on the Great Barrier Reef off the coast of Queensland, Australia.

Our boat was very still and a whale was diving underneath us and coming up the other side. I was close enough to touch the head of the animal with my feet hanging over the side of the boat.

What great memories both you and I will have!

PS Mrs Yollis: I hope the HTML code worked. Do I get 2 points for this comment?

    Yours from sunny Tasmania,
    Miss W.

G'day to you in sunny Tasmaia! We are enduring more rain these days...more scheduled for tonight.

Thank you so much for a fabulous 2-point comment complete with some HTML! We love that! :-)

How fortunate for both you and Anais to see such beautiful animals. I've never been whale watching, but now I think I will.

Anais will be thrilled with your comment. It's appreciated.

  14. Hi Anais, excellent report on your whale watching trip and I loved your great PhotoPeach.

I hope you enjoyed making your PhotoPeach.

PS A little known fact about me.

Before I do what I do now I used to teach Marine Biology and one of my jobs was working in a fish farm located at a Seaworld like theme park where I saw the dolphins every day,

  15. Dear Anais,

I once went whale watching when I was about 3. When we went we didn't see the type of whale you saw, we saw orca whales!

You asked everyone if they think the animal you saw in one of the pictures was a sea otter. Like you, I think it was a sea otter.

Some day I hope I can go whale watching again. What about you?

    Your friend,
    Kendall

  16. Dear Anais,

Your video reminded me of the time I went on a sail boat. Although I wasn't whale watching, I saw two California Grey whales! One went under the boat and the boat lifted a tiny bit. It was very exciting. The other hung out on the side of the boat so we could get a good look at it.
Did the whales you saw get close to the boat?

    Your friend,
    Trent

  20. Dear Anais,

I think the sea otter is a sea lion because it is brown and it has a point on its nose. I've only seen whales at Sea World, but I've seen about hundred seals at San Diego at a harbor, and most of the seals were on shore. Where did you get the view of the Channel Islands? What was the favorite whale you saw?

    Sincerely,
    Sam

  22. Dear Anais,

That trip sounded really cool. Did you get to ride the dolphins? I've always wanted to ride a dolphin. How many feet was the water coming out of the whale?

You and your family looks like your having fun.

    Scarlet

Sorry but it is a no to Whale Watching. Our tourism students do it as part of their course but I've never had time to sneak onto one of their tours to check it out in action.

  26. @ Sue Waters, (or as you will now be known, Our Marine Biologist Expert) :-)

Thanks so much for taking the time to comment. Before I shared your comment with the class, I first opened up The Edublogger site and mentioned that I follow the blog to learn how to become a better educational blogger. I told them that it is an international site for educators, and the leader of it is Sue Waters. We then looked at your avatar.

Next, I opened up our comment section and...Boy, were they excited when they recognized your avatar! It's her!

(I thought you'd enjoy hearing about your celebrity status here in California!)

    Thanks again!
    Mrs. Yollis

  27. @Mrs Yollis Glad to hear that they were excited!

It's an absolute pleasure to comment because you have given me so much on The Edublogger and I really love to help support the students. Ultimately the students are what it is all about.

It's interesting I have two different avatars. My comment avatar is me sitting on a step with my laptop on my lap (which is less known) while this avatar is me holding chocolate is more globally known.
