Today, February 2, Punxsutawney Phil came out of his burrow at Gobbler's Knob in Pennsylvania.
He saw his shadow!
Tradition says that:
If Punxsutawney Phil
sees his shadow... then winter weather will continue for six more weeks.

If Punxsutawney Phil
does NOT sees his shadow... then spring weather will come soon

What do you think of Punxsutawney Phil?
Do you know of any other traditions?

Dear Mrs. Yollis and class,

Happy Groundhog Day!

Dear Mrs.Yollis,
ReplyDeleteDid you know Groundhog Day was celebrated on February 2 in Canada, and the United States. According to tales,if a Groundhog rises from its burrow on that day and the Groundhog fails to see his shadow,it will leave the burrow, indicating that winter will soon end. However,if the Groundhog sees its shadow, winter will continue for six more weeks. The holiday began in Pennsylvania in the 18 century. The largest Groundhog Day celebration was held in Punxsutawney,Pennsylvania 1886.

Dear Mrs. Yollis and class,

Mrs. Eller
Erie, PA
Dear Mrs. Yollis,
ReplyDeleteI'm very glad that Phil saw his shadow and gave us six more weeks of winter. Winter is my favorite season! I like it because of the snow. (In other places). Another reason I like winter is that my birthday is in it and I love celebrating my birthday.
Are you happy about Phil seeing his shadow, or did you want spring to come early?
Sincerely,
Ben
@ Mrs. Eller,
ReplyDeleteThank you for letting us know about Buckeye Chuck! I've never heard of him.
Did he see his shadow like Phil? What is the weather like in Erie, Pennsylvania?
:-)
@ Ben,
Thanks for a very good comment! You asked me if I was happy about Phil's prediction. Well, no. I really look forward to the spring and summer weather, so I'd rather have that come sooner! Although, we do need the rain. We are in a drought situation here in southern California. Hmmm....
:-)
