Meet Mrs. Yollis

This is my 38th year of teaching, and I could not be happier. Currently, I teach third grade, but have taught combination classes and fifth grade. I thoroughly enjoy teaching. Working alongside parents to bring out the best in their children gives me great satisfaction.

Mrs. Yollis was once a third grader!

Personal Information

I have a curious nature and am a lifelong learner. A few years ago, I finished a Master's degree in Integrating Technology in the Classroom. I always seek out new ways to improve my teaching skills and advance the quality of education at my school. In 2011-2012, I was honored to be named my district's Teacher of the Year.

When I am not in the classroom I love to travel. In my early years of teaching, I spent three summers in Northern Spain teaching English to Basque children. It was an interesting experience teaching in another country. Recently I have been to Hawaii, Montana, Oregon, Minnesota, Washington, Alaska, and Belize. A few summers ago, my husband and I traveled along historic Route 66. We love traveling and exploring this amazing world together!

Mr. and Mrs. Yollis in Hawaii 2011

I love adventure! Here  are two videos I made while vacationing in Hawaii.

Video: Swimming with Turtles

In 2009, Mr. Yollis and I traveled to the
Arctic Circle for a fly fishing trip!

Being in nature, and especially out fly fishing, brings me great happiness!

We used to have a Labrador retriever named Buck.
Here he was as a puppy helping me with some grading.

Buck lived to be nine years old and weighed 100 pounds!
To see some of Buck's milestones, read Buck's Birthday Bash!

We plan to continue traveling, learning, and playing together for many years to come.

Professional Information

Why I blog with my young students:

The summer of 2010, I spent three days right here...at the Googleplex in Mountain View, California! I attended the Google Geo Teachers' Institute for two days. We were taught how to use Google Earth, Google Maps and Google Sketchup in the classroom. The final day I worked with National Geographic. They have a fabulous learning program called the Giant Traveling Maps.

Here are some videos of the maps in action:
1.  Visit Asia!

2.  Visit North America!

3.  Visit Africa!

4. Visit South America

We were looking for ways to incorporate the Google Earth activities with the Giant Traveling Maps!
