3-D Shape Extravaganza!

By Ben, Sydney, Trent, and Ethan

In math, Mrs. Yollis’ students have been working on geometric 3-dimensional shapes.

3-D shapes have flat faces, straight edges, and pointy vertices

 *     *     *     *     *

One 3-D shape is a cube. It has six square faces, twelve edges, and eight vertices.

  *     *     *     *     *

 Another  3-D figure is the cylinder. This space figure has two circular faces, zero edges, and zero vertices.

  *     *     *     *     *

Rectangular prisms have six faces, twelve edges, and eight vertices.

  *     *     *     *     *

A recognizable  3-D shape is the cone. It looks like an ice cream cone. The cone has one face, zero edges, and one vertex.

 *     *     *     *     *

One very unusual 3-D shape Mrs. Yollis’ students have learned about is the square pyramid. The square pyramid  has five faces (four triangular and one square base), eight edges, and five vertices.

  *     *     *     *     *

The final 3-D shape our class  learned about is the sphere. It has no faces, edges, or vertices.
Poor sphere.
:-(

  *     *     *     *     *
Here is a PhotoPeach show we put together!  See what the faces of the shapes look like!

3-D Shapes Extravaganza on PhotoPeach

3-D shapes are extremely fun to learn about!

Thanks to Mr. and Mrs. Kim for the photo of the pyramid at the Louvre Museum!

Do you know any 3-D figures we didn’t mention?

How many faces, edges, and vertices did you find?

  1. Dear Mrs. Yollis,

    I enjoyed the post about the 3-D shapes. Trent has been quizzing me all week about the different shapes and their names and what the properties are of each shape. It has been a flash back to my Geometry class in HIGH SCHOOL! I am impressed that your students are learning so much Geometry in 3rd Grade!

    By the way, I think the fact that the sphere doesn't have edges makes it unique and that is cool!

    SIncerely,
    Mrs. Adler

  2. Dear Mrs Yollis and your students once again what a fantastic project you all did on shapes. I really never looked at shapes in that form even when I went to school. I truly will look at shapes in a different light so thanks for the lesson as you really are never to old to learn keep up the super work regards AA.

  3. Dear Ben, Sydney, Trent, and Ethan,

    You guys asked us if we know any more 3-dimensional shapes you didn't mention. No, I do not know any more.

    I really like the PhotoPeach that you guys made. My favorite part was with the cone, and that the picture was gray then it turned into a color picture.

    What was your favorite part about making the post, and making the PhotoPeach?

    Sincerely,

    Nick

  4. Dear Ben, Sydney, Trent & Ethan,

    What a great lesson! The music was so dramatic and the 'opening up' of the shapes was really enlightening. My favorite was the cylinder which reminded me of Mickey Mouse ears when it was open. I was surprised to see all of the rectangles that made up the cylinder.

    Thank you for your hard work.

  7. @ Mrs. Adler,

    Thank you for the marvelous comment! We were wondering if high school was your favorite year in geometry, or if high school was your first year learning it?

    @AA

    Thanks for the wonderful comment! It is interseting that you didn't learn shapes the way we do, but it is great that you learned a new thing. What was your favorite solid figure?

    @Nick

    Your comment was mind blowing! I'm glad you liked the PhotoPeach. Why did you like the cone the best? Our favorite part of the PhotoPeach was the Awesome music.

    Sincerly,
    Ben

  8. @ Jackson's mom,

    I loved the dramatic music also. It was my favorite part of the PhotoPeach. The cylinder reminded me of Micky Mouse, too.

  9. Dear Ben, Sydney, Trent, and Ethan,

    Fantastic post about 3-D shapes!

    You asked if there were any shapes that were not mentioned. Well, I can think of one. What is the shape of the elevator shaft at school. And, what about the prism we used to break up white light into the spectrum? (Roy G Biv)

    Someone MUST remember those shapes?

  12. @ Mrs. Yollis,

    You asked what is the shape of the elevator shaft at school. We think it is a hexagonal prism. We think the prism that we used with the white light was a triangular prism. What is your favorite 3-D shape? Trent's favorite 3-D shape is a cone. Sydney's favorite 3-D shape is a cylinder.

    Best,
    Trent and Sydney

  13. Dear Ben, Sydney, Trent, and Ethan,

    The post is awesome! I love the music. You guys probably understand your 3-D shapes, which is great. I love how you all held out the shapes and told us how many faces the shapes have.

    Sincerely,
    Gal

  14. @ Sean,

    Thank you for the wicked awesome compliment about our video. Trent has the same feeling about the cone because he LOVES ice cream. Sydney likes the cylinder because she likes soda.

  15. Dear Mrs. Yollis,

    The cone reminds me of a party hat. A cube reminds me of a Rubik's cube. At last a cylinder reminds me of a can of dog chow.

  16. Dear Gal,

    Thank you for your complimenting comment. Ben, Ethan, Trent, and I do know our 3-D shapes. Do you think you know your 3-D shapes? You had a good description about how we held the shape up, and told how many faces there were. What was your favorite shape in the video? My favorite shape was the cylinder (not just because it was me who was holding the cylinder).

    Sydney

  17. Dear Sydney,

    Thanks for writing back. You asked what my favorite shape was. I would have to say the cube is mine. The reason is that I really do think that it is like the star of all 3-D shapes. Just like Mrs. Yollis said. I do think I know my 3-D shapes. Why is the cylinder your favorite?

    Your Friend,
    Gal

  18. Dear Mrs. Yollis,

    We really enjoyed the video and are so thrilled that the students are learning Geometry in class!
    One shape, in particular, is our favorite. It is the pyramid. It reminds us of our visit to one of the most famous landmarks in Paris. This landmark is called the Musee Louvre, also known as, the Louvre Museum. There are large pyramids in front of the museum made completely of glass and metal. It is called the Louvre Pyramid.

  24. @ Leanne,

    Thank you for the wonderful comment about our post. Your favorite 3-D shape is the cube. Mine is the cylinder for two reasons. One reason is because I like soda, and the other reason is because it is an alliteration with my name.

  25. Dear Ben, Trent, Sydney, and Ethan,

    Great blog post! My favorite 3-D shape is the square because it is common which means it's everywhere.

    The cube reminds me of a slice of cake. It has six square faces, twelve edges, and eight vertices.

    I enjoy the cube in another way, and that way is with playing with a dice. My favorite game that involves dice is Monopoly.
