Did you know that this year, September 22, is the first day of autumn, also known as the autumnal equinox?
In Southern California, we do not experience autumn, or fall,
the same way some places do.
However, we do feel a change in our weather, and even
the leaves of our trees sometimes change color!
Have you ever wondered why leaves change color in the fall?

Dear Mrs. Yollis,
ReplyDeleteI'm so excited for fall! I like some of the fall holidays like Sukkot, Halloween and Thanksgiving!
For the past week, I have enjoyed the fall holiday of Sukkot. During this holiday, we take three specific types of leaves, and shake them from right to left! We also smell a yellow citron and taste new fruits of the season under the Sukkah! I really enjoyed making decorations for my family's Sukkah!
I also like to carve Jack-o-lanterns on Halloween!
Do you carve Jack-o-lanterns? Does Buck eat them?
Sincerely,
Chloe
Dear Chloe,
DeleteI agree about the holidays that I celebrate at this time of year. I also play fall ball meaning that it is fall baseball for me. I am on a team that my dad is coaching, and we have outscored the other team 37 to 5. We have won both games.
I also celebrate Sukkot that is a Jewish Holiday that celebrates the time to harvest fruits and vegetables. What we did to make a Sukkah is got a kind of tent that that had Sukkot decorations on it. It was a very fun time.
What did you do during this time of year?
Sincerely,
Bryc♣
The bold is for compound words.
Dear Bryce,
DeleteI don't play baseball but I am a huge basketball fan and I am playing club basketball this Fall. I really like Fall. The smell of pumpkins this time of year really makes me smile. I also like Fall because my birthday is in October. I hope we will be able to celebrate Halloween and my birthday with the whole class.
Your friend,
Darius
p.s. I tried to use html code to bold the spelling words but it is not working on my computer.
@Darius,
ReplyDeleteBaseball is my favorite sport, and I play it two seasons a year. This season my team has been hunting down wins. lucky enough we have been able to outscore the other team 35 to 5.
Basketball on the other hand is a very fun sport, sadly I am not into it as much as some of my friends. Once in a while I will watch a basketball game on TV, but usually when I watch television the Boston Red Sox game is going on.
That is fun to have your birthday the month of Halloween. I hope you save some cake to have extra candy while trick or treating. What do you like to do during the candy festival, do you like to give out candy or get candy from friends?
That is O.K that you could not get the html code working, it happens to the best of the best. Happy almost birthday!
Sincerely,
Bryc♣
P.S. The bold is for words in the list this week, or compound words.
Dear Bryce,
DeleteWe like basketball, but not baseball. Basketball is very fun to play, but I get jumped on a lot. Do you know the best NBA basketball player? It is LeBron James. Alec likes the Heat, and his favorite player on the Heat is LeBron James. My favorite team is the Boston Celtics, and my favorite player is Paul Peirce.
We don't know much about baseball, but Alec and I watch it occasionally. My favorite baseball team is the New York Yankees, and my favorite player has passed away but still is a legend, Babe Ruth. Alec's favorite team is the Red Sox.
Warmly,
Peter and Alec
Dear Peter and Alec,
DeleteThank you for the phenomenal comment on a more out in the open post about spectacular fall. That is unusual to have a conversation going and then you bring up exact opposite cases. Yes, basketball is very fun, but I would prefer baseball on most usual days.
Basketball can get rough sometimes. But, when you're having fun, who notices when you get hurt? Here is an example: during the Stanley Cup, one player was playing with a broken rib, and still was playing stellar. I think the best NBA player is LeBron James of the Miami Heat, although Kobe Bryant is never out of the race.
I agree with both of you on teams and on players on those teams. Peter has an edge though, because my great grandfather lived in Rhode Island which is really close to Boston, so Boston is kind of like my home team. That all means that my favorite team is the Celtics.
Baseball is very fun and not very complicated, although I am at a very high level of baseball. I watch baseball when ever I get a chance. First and most important is getting the term "favorite team Yankees" out of my head and then starting to protest. For Alec, I have no reason to give a fuss because I love the Red Sox, and they are the best team in baseball right now! Though there is no arguing about the Great Bambino aka Babe Ruth. My favorite player on the Red Sox is David Ortiz aka Big Papi, and guess what he has over 2,000 HITS in his career and it is still going!
What is Alec's favorite baseball player on the Red Sox?
Sincerely,
Bryc♣
Dear Bryce,
DeleteAlec does not have a favorite player because, he likes all of them. 2,000 hits? Thats incredible for a MLB player. How long has Big Papi, aka David Ortiz, played in the MLB? Do you like the Dodgers? I sure do! There not my favorite team. My favorite team is the New York Yankees.
Do you like the New York Yankees?
Is David Ortiz the best player on the Red Sox?
Warmly,
Peter
Dear Peter,
DeleteThat is perfectly fine with me that Alec does not have a favorite player because if he is a Red Sox fan there is nothing wrong with his decision. He has played 11 years with the Red Sox and 17 years in all. David Ortiz has also accomplished a milestone of the 200 home run club, which he did last season at the Oakland Coliseum.
Surprisingly, I am not a Dodgers fan when they are playing the Red Sox, but that is on a rare occasion. When they are playing other teams I will root for them depending on the stadium they are playing in. Example: It is Rockies battling against the Dodgers, but I am more of a Rockies fan. They are playing at Coors Field, which indicates that I am right now a die-hard Rockies fan. That is unusual because of the Dodgers being the hometown team and not having support to them.
The Yankees are a very loved team but I do not follow that because I think that the Yankees are not good because of Alex Rodriguez. All he has brought to the team is shame, because he has taken drugs three times in his kind of short career. He has even been in the biogenesis scandal, which was a drug scandal that happened not very long ago.
The entire last paragraph being said, I do not like the Yankees not one little bit. It is not all Alex it is also because I am a die-hard Red Sox fan, and the Red Sox and Yankees are a colossal big rivalry meaning that when they come to either Yankees Stadium or Fenway Park it is going to be a sellout.
Yes David Ortiz is the best player on the Red Sox, and that is because he is a sweet player and a very talented player. There is one guy that they give as much credit to and that is Jonny Gomes. He plays for the Red Sox and brought up the team in so many sticky situations that they won the division and a place in the playoffs.
Why do you only watch games occasionally?
Sincerely,
Bryc♣
Hi Mrs. Yollis and class. I am writing this blog for my spelling assignment.
ReplyDeleteFall is amazing. During fall we have a lot of orange color trees in our backyard. When the wind blows the leaves drop from the tree.
Alec (@lec)
Dear Mrs. Yollis,
ReplyDeleteI have two mulberry trees that change color in the fall. I also have a plum tree that changes color a bit.
Nizma has a strange plant that only grows in the fall. Nizma also has a red apple tree and two blackberry bushes.
From,
Nate and Nizma
Dear Mrs. Yollis,
ReplyDeleteSheila's favorite fall sport is soccer, but Heather's favorite fall sport is tennis.
Heather still remembers how the tree changed and when we checked the tree's color change. The tree is right outside our classroom, so we can see it everyday.
Sheila likes the tree because when it is fall, it turns orange.
Our favorite season is winter. It's really cold, but you can drive to Big Bear or Mountain High (plus a lot of other mountains) and ski or snowboard. You can also make snow angels and snowmen. Sometimes, if you are lucky, it snows! Here is a link of Heather's post of Mountain High:
My Trip to Mountain High
What is your favorite season?
Warmly,
Heather and Sheila
Dear Chloe,
ReplyDeleteI also love to carve pumpkins! I am going to carve a pumpkin with a huge, wide, smile this fall. I also love the smell of the pumpkin pancakes my mom makes for breakfast. Do you like pumpkin pancakes too?
Your friend,
Allison
Dear Mrs. Yollis,
ReplyDeleteYour picture of the changing leaves is beautiful. I love fall because it is a mix of cooler weather but it's still warm. I enjoy hunting for big leaves when they fall on the ground and when the last leaf drops to the ground then we know it's winter. Wish me luck in my leaf hunt!
Your student,
Allison
Mrs. Yollis' class,
ReplyDeleteYeah! We loved being a part of your blog. We're most looking forward to these things about fall: the fair, leaves changing colors, picking apples, raking leaves, cooler temperatures, carving pumpkins, hay rides, corn maizes, apple cider and candy apples. Our most important fall activity will being going to Stone Mountain Georgia on a fieldtrip.
Keep learning,
Miss Tripp's 4th grade class
Dear Mrs. Yollis,
ReplyDeleteWhen the school year just started, we had not seen many small twigs, also known as branches. Back then, the only thing we could see are the bright green leaves, and they are so beautiful. From the view now, we can see all of the branches there are in the tree, even the tiniest ones!
My fall activity is scouting for leaves, just like Allison! The biggest leaf that I ever found is a leaf about SIX inches tall and FIVE inches wide! I found it when I was trick-or-treating for Halloween. Have you ever found a leaf (or leaves) that big?
Cheers,
Heather
