Twice a year, around March 20 or 21 and Sept. 22 or 23, our sun shines directly over the equator. That event marks the beginning of spring or fall. What is the equator?

Things to look for in fall:

Evergreen trees will stay forever green. :-) Why do the leaves of deciduous trees change color? Use World Book Online to research. Remember, do NOT copy sentences. However, as we continue into fall, the days will get shorter and the night hours will get longer. This pattern will continue until we reach the winter solstice. That is the longest night of the year and marks a new season, winter.

3.  Because the northern hemisphere is now tilted away from the sun, the days will start to become cooler. People will change their behavior. What sorts of behavioral changes will your family make as the days get shorter and cooler?  (In southern California, we have mild climate. We don't get too cold in our community.)

The first day of spring is called the 

Vernal Equinox. 

Spring started on Sunday, March 20, 2022, at 8:33 A.M. (PDT) in southern California. It is called the Vernal Equinox. There are two times when the sun is exactly above the equator. 

1. The Autumnal Equinox is in September. (First day of fall.)

2. The Vernal Equinox is in March. (First day of spring.) 

Equinox means equal night and there are nearly twelve hours of daylight and twelve hours of night.

Seasonal Haiku Decks

Today, Mrs. Minicozzi came into our room and taught us all about Haiku Deck! 

 In class, we have been talking about topics and details, so this visual app was a fun way to practice these concepts. First, Mrs. Minicozzi gave each student a month of the year and a planning sheet. On the planning sheet, the students wrote their topic and then came up with 4-6 details about that month. Some of the details were national holidays or typical seasonal events. Sometimes students added birthdays. Once the plan was approved, students logged into the class' Haiku Deck account and started creating their slide show. Each detail became a word or phrase and the students looked for a Creative Commons photo to complement the detail.  

Mrs. Yollis published the Haiku Decks on this class blog. The HTML code used was modified to fit. The height was "304" and the width was "480".

Fabulous Fall in the Northern Hemisphere!

Did you know that this year, September 22, is the first day of autumn, also known as the autumnal equinox?

In Southern California, we do not experience autumn, or fall,

the same way some places do.

However, we do feel a change in our weather, and even

the leaves of our trees sometimes change color!
