Steps Taken to Complete this
*Turkey Takes a Vacation*
photo album

First, we read Turkey Trouble, by Wendi Silvano.  The funny fantasy follows our feathered friend as he finds out what Americans feast upon for Thanksgiving.

Second, we selected an exotic vacation location for Turkey. (If he left America over Thanksgiving break, he would not get eaten.)

Third, we researched an international landmark using reference books from Epic and Encyclopedia Britannica Online.

Fourth, we located the international landmark on Google Earth and took a "vacation" screenshot. Pegman was so helpful! The screenshot was uploaded to our class collaborative photo album.

Fifth, we used our facts to create a story about Turkey's time at the international landmark.

 ✈     ✈     ✈     ✈     ✈

What was your favorite part about the project and why?

What landmark would you like to visit?

  1. Dear Mrs. Yollis and her students,

I loved seeing the vacation photos from Turkey. I'm glad he was able to get out of America for Thanksgiving. Good thing he found out in time!

One place I would like to visit is Stonehenge in England. The prehistoric stones are fascinating. I researched and found out that on the summer solstice, the morning sun rays shine in a special way at Stonehenge.

Does anyone know how heavy the stones are? A ton is 2,000 pounds. Hmmm...

    Buck

    1. Dear Blake,

I really liked your Great Wall of China screenshot. It really seemed like turkey was on the Great Wall of China. I was sopposed to go there last summer but it got canceled because of covid-19. I also liked how you put the white square around the turkey. Have you ever been to the Great Wall of China? Bye!

Hi Class! This is Dahlia's mom writing. I wish I could travel around with the turkey on vacation. I sure do miss traveling-- seeing these amazing landmarks, eating exotic foods and hearing other languages. I'll be the turkey has so many frequent flier points from the airlines! I think if I were doing this assignment I would send the turkey to Hagia Sofia in Turkey. It's a beautiful religious building, and it's in the country of Turkey. Turkey visits Turkey! Happy Thanksgiving to all of you!

    Dear Mrs. Yollis and class,

I really liked all of the vacation photos!

If I was going to visit somewhere, I would go to the Eiffel Tower. It is an amazing landmark in Paris, France.

I want to visit the Great Wall of China. I was going to go in the summer, but the virus came so we cancelled.

Liam would also like to visit the Great Wall of China. I want to see what I researched!

Where would you like to visit and why?

  6. Hi Mrs.Yollis and class,This was such a good idea. I loved doing this activity. The turkey would go to the Acrpolis. Where would all of you like to go? I hope we get a lot of comments! Love Dahlia
P.S There are many facts about the Acropolis, and I hope you pick a landmark for Turkey.

  7. Hi Everyone, I really enjoyed Dylan's turkey visiting the North Seoul Tower in Korea. The cable cart seems like a fun way to go to the top to see the building. My mother actually traveled to Korea when she was in 3rd grade! She said she enjoyed all the shopping there. I wonder: Is the beautiful city lighting Dylan stated is as beautiful as the city lighting we see here in Los Angeles?

    1. Dear Caden,
That is a fantastic but curious landmark! One million visitors! That is a lot of people! Each stone weighs 25Tones? Thats a very heavy stone if you ask me! And was built 5,000 years ago? I wonder what the 1520s were with that famous landmark!
One question though. What did the people do at the ceremony?
      Hmm...

  8. So many great facts. I wish I was tagging along with this turkey, looks like he's having a great time! Happy Thanksgiving!

  9. What a great vacation this turkey had! I am so envious, I wish I had been with him! Although I have been to several of these world landmarks, there are many shown here that I would like to visit. Some I did not even know existed, like the Potala Palace in Tibet! I’t sooo amazing! I wonder how many days it would take to go through, and visit each room? My parents lived in Nepal, a country next door, because of my fathers job. They traveled around that area and perhaps they visited Potala Palace. I would love to see it some day.
One landmark where the turkey went, which is especially meaningful to me is Dahlia’s post of the Acropolis in Greece. I was born in Greece and left when I was 10 and do you know that I never visited the Acropolis, till I went back as a tourist? Sometimes when things are close to you, you put them off till later. I also enjoyed the photo of the pyramids in Egypt. From Greece, my family moved and lived in Cairo, Egypt where the pyramids are. You are right, they are huge! One wonders how they built them way back then without the modern tools we have now. Even today with our huge cranes etc, they would be so difficult to build. Those stones, one on top of the other are so huge! How did they get them so high up there. Scientists can’t come up with an explanation. And just next to the huge pyramids, is the huge Sphinx. Look up a picture of the Sphinx. It is a lion with a man’s head with a beautiful head piece.
From Egypt we moved for a few years to Libya which is next door. Not sure what landmarks the turkey would have visited there, other than the desert. But they do have beautiful beaches. Every so often in Libya we would have a sand storm. We closed all the windows and doors to our house, and did not go out, but the sand still came through the cracks.
It seems the turkey did not think to go to Pakistan, another place I lived. It’s not too far from Tibet, where the Potala Palace is. Pakistan use to be a part of India. India was divided up into two countries in 1945. It’s a very exotic country. The people wear a beautiful national costume called the Shalwar Camise, and they have yummy food, but sort of spicy. Pakistan is next to a place my mother called the most beautiful in the world - Kashmir - she was amazed by it’s beauty.
Perhaps you are wondering why I lived in so many places growing up. My father was a diplomat for the United States State Department. He was sent there to help the countries improve their agriculture methods and trade. You will note that the countries we went to are still quite poor and most of the people have a very difficult life and make very little money. He even went for some time to a country called Yemen, which is south of Saudi Arabia. We did not go with him there.
Like Dahlia’s mom wrote above, it would have been fun for the turkey to go to his “namesake” country - Turkey. Can you imagine what the Turkish people would have said to him when they found out he was a “turkey”. I also have a connection there. Both my grandmother and mother were born there. Unfortunately I have never visited, but hope to some time.
When I was young we use to say something silly. We would say:
“Austria got Hungary and ate Turkey in Greece”.

      Dear Isla,

I loved your interesting and factual Turkey Takes a Vacation slide on Big Ben! Before I was born, my mom and my grandparents went to England and loved Big Ben. I bet Turkey liked it there too! It is also a nice coincidence that it was made on your birthday May 31.
It is crazy how tall Big Ben is too. 315 feet! What is your dream vacation and why? Once again, love your slide!

  15. Hello Mrs. Yollis and class,
Happy Thanksgiving! I hope you are all doing well and are staying safe! I loved how all the slides were made by a specific student and how all the photos were taken from Google Earth. I thought that it was very fascinating how the presentation was collaborative and that everybody could work at the same time. Would any of you like to go to the landmark that you researched?

  16. Dear Bram,I really like your turkey takes a vacation,I like it because of how you wrote the text as a letter and how the letter said at the start " to everyone besides the farmer" I also liked that you used a banner that said Potala Palace,In addition,I also liked the arrow that you used and how you made it so turkey could say Potala Palace. An interesting landmark I would like to visit would be Easter Island, But now that I know more about the Potala Palace I might visit there.Where would you like to go?

I like the place that you sent Turkey. I also liked how you told us more than three facts about the Colosseum. Also, great photo. I don’t know if Turkey can stand on the railings though. He may go to jail. I bet Turkey must be having an awesome time. I know I would be.

Also I was wondering if you can really fit 300,000 turkeys in the Colosseum?

  20. I really enjoyed reading your turkey slide. Here are a few reasons why I liked your story. I thought it was very funny how you talked about the farmer. I also think it is interesting that there are 1,000 rooms and 200,000 statues at the Potala Palace. I like that you picked that place because I had never heard of it and I learned a lot about it. Great job, Bram.

  21. Dear Bram,
I liked how you did Potala Palace. I think that your choice was really cool because no one else chose Potala Palace. In fact, I had never heard of Potala Palace.

Also, you taught the class how to do the arrows to point to the turkey. I also liked that you had a lot of interesting facts, such as how there are 1,000 rooms in Potala Palace. Turkey sure will be able to hide in all of those rooms.

I have a few questions for you. How did you think of Potala Palace? Was it in Epic? Also, how did you get such a great picture? Last, but not least, where is Potala Palace? Have you ever been there? I want to go there someday.

I hope you respond to me soon. I also hope I can take pictures like yours.

    Your friend,
    Dahlia (also known as turkey)

  22. Dear Aarna,

I already knew a little about the Maya, but I haven’t really heard of Chichen Itza. It was great to learn. I knew the Maya people were old but 3,000 years old is crazy! It is sad to think that the Spanish conquered the Mayan.

I wonder how many tourists go there? I also wonder why they only let tourists climb the steps sometimes?

All in all, I really enjoyed your slide.
    Your friend,
    Ben

  23. Dear Dahlia,

I had heard of the Parthenon but not that it was part of the acropolis or really anything about the acropolis. I know you said it got destroyed a lot but for being not destroyed for more than 333 years it doesn't look good, but I can understand because you said that it was made in the fifth century BC.

There is one burning question in my mind and it is why was the acropolis destroyed so many times and for different reasons?

All in all it was a great slide.

  24. Dear Nicholas,

I really enjoyed your eiffel tower slide. It’s so cool that the tower changes color! It’s also cool that it was built 131 years ago in 1889.

Now I have a few questions for you. Why and how does it change color? By the way the bread was the perfect touch and the reason I chose to comment to you.

All in all your slide rocks!
    Your friend,
    Ben

  25. Dear Bram,
I think that your interesting paragraph is very funny because you included details to make it look like you didn’t want the farmer to find you and how you have so many hiding places.
Your picture of the Potala Palace was amazing. How many pictures did you have to take until you got the right one? Where did you get all of those awesome facts? Let me know!

    Your friend,
    Aarna

  26. Dear Isla,
Happy Thanksgiving! Thank you for your wonderful comment! I agree with what you said about turkey. I also think that Turkey is having a great time at all those world-famous landmarks.

The main reason I am commenting is because I would like to answer your question. You asked if turkey was to be put in jail for doing things at landmarks that he/she wasn’t supposed to do, like climbing The Great Wall of China. Well, first of all, he’s/she’s a turkey, so those rules may not approve for him/her. Second of all, turkey should have known better to not break the rules that may not approve for him/her. Third of all, turkey could have been spotted and could have been reported, so he may get into trouble. So, it really depends on what turkey does, if the rules approve of him/her, or if turkey gets reported and sent to jail. I hope that answers your interesting question. Bye!

    Love,
    Aarna

  27. Dear Bram

I like your vacation slide a lot. I like how you added a lot of detail. I also liked yours because I did not know anything about Potala Palace. For example I was surprised to learn that the palace has 1000 rooms. I was also surprised to learn that the the palace is 425 feet tall. How many visitors come each year? Does anyone live in the palace?

  28. Dear Ben,
I really liked how you lined up the turkey with the statues so it looks like the turkey is one of them. The island seems small to be home to 887 statues. Where did you find all that out? How old are the moai statues? Well, I hope you get your moai portrait.

    Bram

  29. Dear, Liam

I like your choice! It was a great one. Where did you get those true facts? I like how you made your turkey story really interesting and really long. I can’t believe it is 69,000,000 feet long and 13,000 miles long. That's insane! Overall I think your story is great and I hope the farmer does not find you.

    Gavin
