Lowest, Driest, Hottest: Visit Death Valley

This week, Mrs. Yollis' class is learning about
Comparative Adjectives.

Add -er to most adjectives to compare two people, places, or things.

Add -est to most adjectives to compare more than two people, places, or things.

Mrs. Yollis thought this would be a good time to share some photos from Death Valley. It's appropriate because Death Valley is the lowest, driest, hottest place in North America. Learn about comparative adjectives AND a national park all in the same post!

According to the Death Valley Ranger Guide:
During the1849 California gold rush a groups of pioneers decided, against the warning of their wagon master, to take a shorcut" across the unknown deserts of the West. Only one group member died in the valley, but as the party exited through Panamint Mountains, one man looked back and said, "goodbye, Death Valley."

Although the name is less than inviting, Death Valley is a beautiful place. Enjoy the photos taken by Mr. Yollis!

Write a comment using some comparative adjectives!
Be sure to bold the adjectives so they stand out!
Research the tallest buildings! What are the longest rivers? Where are the wettest places on Earth?

  1. Dear Mrs. Yollis,

What a wonderful post about your trip to Death Valley!

I have always been fascinated with waterfalls, so I thought it would be interesting to see which ones are the tallest.

A very tall waterfall, ranked third in the world in height, is Tres Hermanas in Peru. It is estimated to be 3,000 feet. Taller than that is the Tugela Falls in South Africa with a height of 3,110 feet. The tallest waterfall in the world is Angel Falls which is a whopping 3,212 feet!

    Sincerely,
    Leila♥

  2. Dear Mrs. Yollis,

    I love this post!

I remember earlier this year you had this same post. In my opinion I think that when the sunset comes down onto the sand it looks like a picture of sand in a cartoon book.

Based on what we learned today, I am going to compare my adjectives on bears. The Black bear is big, the Kodiak bear is bigger, but the Polar bear is the biggest.

I also have some facts for you:

The Black bears weigh an average of 125 to 600 pounds. The average male length is 4-6 feet.

The Kodiak bear can weigh 500-900 pounds.
The average male length is 7-10 feet.

The Polar bear can weigh 900-1,500 pounds.
The average male length is 8.4.

    Sincerely,
    Aidan

  3. Dear Mrs. Yollis,

I absolutly adore this post! I have carefully read Aidan and Leila's wonderful comments, and they were very interesting. I have researched rivers, and found out that there are a lot of them. The Darling River in Australia is long, the Amazon River in South America is longer, and the Nile River in notheast Africa is the longest river. I will be visiting the Colorado River next week. I am so exited!

    Warmly,
    Alexandra

  4. Dear Mrs. Yollis,

I cherish your post. I remember you had the same post last year. In my opinion I think Death Valley looks very fun to go to because my family and I love to hike.

On to what we learned today, I will compare Mountains. Kanchenjunga (KAHN chun JUNG guh) is tall, but K2 is taller. Mt. Everest is the tallest of them all.

    I have some facts:

Here are some facts about Mt. Everest. It rises five in a half miles over sea level. It is 29,030 feettall. It is one of the mountains that make up the Himalaya Mountains. It is named after Sir George Everest. Tibetans call Mt. Everest Chomolungma. Nepalesea call Mt. Everest Sagarmah.

Here are some facts about K2. It is also called Mt. Godwin Austen. It is 28,250 feet tall. K2 is snow-covered and usually hidden in the clouds. K2's glaciers are 30 to 40 miles long.

Here are some facts about Kanchenjunga (KAHN chuhn JUNG guh). It is 28,169 feet tall. It is also called Kinchinjunga (KIHN chihn JUNG gah). It is the east of Mt. Everest and it is between Nepal and Indian state of Sikkim.

Did you already know some of those facts? Which do you think was best?

    Sincerely,

  5. Dear Mrs Yollis and class,

When many talk of deserts, there seems to be thoughts of hotter, drier, sandier, lifeless places but, when we can take the time to look closer, we can find not all assumptions can be true.

If I were to ask which continent on Earth was the driest, many wouldn't realise it is Antarctica because we see photos of ice covered terrain. It has the lowest rainfall (including snowfall).

The deserts and semi-arid places I've seen have had life if we only take the time to look. I would love to be able to see the Sahara Desert in Africa, the Gobi Desert in Asia and Death Valley in the US as I have read about them and would like to see them in person.

Where is the lowest point in Australia?

It is recorded as Lake Eyre in the state of South Australia. Lake Eyre is normally a flat, salt lake. While it may not rain often in its arid area, rain in distant Queensland can make it down to Lake Eyre. With our increased rains over the last year or two Lake Eyre has water. When this happens, it becomes a major breeding area for birds such as pelicans. Even the water can be teaming with life. In time, the water evaporates and the salt is left once again.

Where is the hottest place in Australia?

Officially, the record is held by Oodnadatta in South Australia. It is said to be 50.7C (123.26F) but I have heard of unofficial records higher than that.
I have described my first full time teaching school to you. I recorded a top temperature above 48.8C (120F) every day for about two weeks. It could be very hot but the air was dry so it wasn't as hard as high temperatures with high humidity (water in air).

Remember, when the weather reports talk about temperature, they mean air temperature. The ground can be much hotter. One beach I know of in New Zealand is made of almost pure iron sand. On very hot summer days, I’ve heard it can be possible to cook an egg on the sand but I never tried it when I have been there.

    Did you know...?

We know deserts can often be very hot in the day but did you know the nights can be very cold? With clear skies and nothing much to hold the heat in the ground, nights can be quite cool. We have an interesting world.

  6. Dear Mrs. Yollis,

I decided to research the rainiest state in the United States. I found that Hawaii is the rainiest state in the US, with an average of 63.7 inches of rain a year. Other very rainy are Louisiana, Mississippi, Alabama, and Florida. These states receive an average of at least 50 inches of rain a year. Do you know what region of the US they are in?

These states are much rainier than California which only receives on average 20 inches of rain a year. Most of this rain falls on Northern California.

    From,
    Sarah

  7. Dear Mrs. Yollis,

What spectacular photos of Death Valley!

When I was watching your video I thought of doing a comment on the hottest temperatures ever recorded in the world.

In third place with a highest recorded temperature of 131ºF is the very hot city of Ghadames, Libya. Hotter than that and in second place is Death Valley, California with the highest recorded temperature of 134ºF. In first place and the hottest place on earth is Al'Azziyah, Libya with the highest recorded temperature of 136ºF! As you can see Libya is extremely hot, it has two of the highest temperatures ever recorded.

    Sincerely,
    Leila⚓

  8. Dear Mrs. Yollis,

What a wonderful post about Death Valley!

I decided to research the coldest place on earth. The coldest place on earth is Vostok, Antarctica. The snow in Vostok nearly never melts. The snow compresses into a glacier and makes the ice sheet. In Vostok, there is very dry weather. There is no month average over 32 ºF. ( 0ºC ) The summer average is nearly above freezing.

Vostok, Antarctica is colder than Oymyakoni, Siberia, but it is in second place for the coldest place on earth. Oymyakoni's nickname is Northern Pole of Cold. The coldest it has ever been in Oymyakoni, Siberia was -89.9 ºF. BRRRR!

Oymyakoni, Siberia is colder than Verkhoyansk, Siberia, but Verkhovansk is in third place for the coldest place on earth. The average monthly temperature for January is -50.4 ºF, and the average monthly temperature for July is 62 ºF.

Verkhoyansk, Siberia is cold, Oymyakoni, Antarctica is colder, but Vostok, Antarctica is the coldest place on earth.

Can you add any facts to mine?

    Sincerely,
    M♥a

  9. Dear Mrs. Yollis,

I really like your post! The sand dunes looked like clay, but they were real.

I researched the most poisonous animals on earth. The Blue Ringed Octopus is poisonous. Here are some facts about it: It can be as small as a golf ball. It has a painless bite, but it's venom immediately starts to work.

The King Cobra is more poisonous. Here are some facts about it: It eats other snakes. It lives in Asia. A King Cobra can kill a full grown asian elephant in three hours. It is 5.6 meters in length.

Last but not least is the Box Jellyfish. It is the most poisonous animal on earth. Here are some facts: It has killed 5,567 animals and people, since 1954. The venom attacks the haert of its pray and it will die in a few minutes. It is mostly found in Asia.

Hopefully I'll never meet any of these in person!

    From,
    Maya

  10. Dear Mrs. Yollis, Over spring break I went to Knott's Berry Farm. They have a lot of roller coasters. Some of the roller coasters are big, some are bigger, and some are the biggest roller coasters I have ever seen.

Some rides had a long line. Some rides had even longer lines. Some rides had the longest lines that I have ever seen in my whole entire life.

See you soon, Jordyn (P.S. I need help bolding my adjectives.)

  11. Dear Mrs. Yollis,

I enjoyed the video immensely! My favorite part were the gorgeous sand dunes. They look like someone took them right out of a comic book!
I am glad it rained before you visited, because the flowers are so beautiful.
I researched that the highest point of Death Valley National Park is Telescope Peak. It is 11,049 feet high. It is higher than Mount Whiteney to the West and Charleston Peak to the East. The lowest point in the valley with - 282 feet is Badwater Basin. It is even lower than the Caspian Sea(-92 feet) in Asia ,but not as low as the dead Sea in Jordan/Israel. The dead sea is Earths lowest elevation with -1360 feet.

I loved all of Mr. Yollis pictures and I hope my family will vist Death Valley soon.

    Love,
    Kelly

  12. Dear Mrs. Yollis,

I treasure lakes in Africa, and I decided to research them. Lake Malawi is long, Lake Tanganyika is longer, but Lake Victoria is the longest of the three.

Here are some facts about these lakes:

*Lake Malawi is 11,430 sq. miles, and it is also known as Lake Nyasa.

*Lake Tanganyika is 12,700 sq. miles, and it is estimated to be the second deepest lake in the world.

*Lake Victoria is 26,828 sq. miles, and it was named after Queen Victoria of the United Kingdom.

Did you know any of my facts?

    Sincerely,
    Alexandra

  13. Dear Mrs. Yollis,
Thank you for the interesting post and spectacular photos of Death Valley. My favorite photo was the sunset on the sand dunes. I also really liked the photo of Mosaic Canyon. Death Valley is a beautiful place! I would like to visit there soon.

I love skyscrapers and I did a little research about the tallest buildings in the world.

Here is some information about the five highest skyscrapers around the world:

*Burj Khalifa in the city of Dubai, United Arab Emirates is 162 stories and 2,716 feet high.

*Taipei 101 in Taipei, Taiwan is 103 stories high and 1,667 feet high.

*Shanghai World Financial Center in Shanghai, China is 101 stories high and 1,614 feet high.

*International Commerce Centre in Hong Kong, China is 108 stories high and !,588 feet high.

*Petronas Towers in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia is 88 stories high and 1,483 feet high.

The Burj Khalifa in Dubai is over 1000 feet taller than the 2nd tallest skyscraper, Taipei 101. The World Trade Center, which measured !,368 feet was the third tallest building in the United States before it was destroyed by terrorists on September 11, 2001.

What do you know about skyscrapers?

    Your friend,
    Matthew
