April is Family Blogging Month!

Mrs. Yollis and her students love to share what they are learning and experiencing.

In an effort to include more family members in our online community, we are proclaiming:

April is Family Blogging Month!

Each student made a list of their family members. After looking through the archive, students selected specific posts tailored to the interest of a particular relative.

We're inviting everyone to comment:
moms, dads, brothers, sisters, grandmas, grandpas, uncles, aunts, and cousins.

Students will be inviting their family to participate in a conversation!
Maybe we'll get some 2-point comments!

What do you think of our idea?

  1. Dear Mrs. Yollis & Class,

This is a truly inspired idea, one that will hopefully spur on lots of interesting comments on your multitude of subjects.

I'm anxious to see which posts Ben has decided I should comment on. I'm pretty confident it won't be anything to do with math, as he knows that's not my strong suit.

    Hope everyone enjoys their break.

    Happy posting!

    Best,

    Eric (Ben's dad)

  2. Dear Mrs Yollis and students,
what a great concept I just love it. I will watching with great enthusiasm to see what each family member will write about. I bet there will be alot of interesting information each family will write about and hopefully I will learn something new each time. Happy blogging from down under AA.

  3. @ Mr. Cohen,

Thanks for your support of our idea! The students were very excited to pick out posts for their family members.

I was happy to hear students talking about calling their grandparents and hoping that they would leave a comment. To see kids so excited about learning is a real thrill for me! I know parents feel the same way.

    @ AA,

    Thanks for your compliment! :-)

Connecting students and their families through blogging is rich. It gives students a chance to share what they are learning with their friends and families. In addition, when the child goes back to a post, he/she is reviewing the lesson a second or third time which also helps with comprehension.

    Thanks for your comments!

    Mrs. Yollis

  4. @ Eric (My dad),

Thank you for getting Family Blogging Challenge started! :-)

I'm proud of you a ton!

Sorry to say but I think you should comment on a math post, or you'll never learn it and that won't be good.

Maybe you should try Hip Hip Array!.

    Sincerley,
    Ben

  5. @ Ben,

I love how you wrote a comment here for your dad, complete with a link to a post you think he'd like. (Great use of the HTML code!) Excellent blogging skills!

We have received many comments so far. Kayla's cousin, Scarlet's sister, your cousin... It is a big hit!

You are lucky to already have so many fantastic families involved in your blog and I look forward to following your new family visitors.

    Happy Easter!

  8. Dear Mrs. Yollis,

This my first comment from my new house. I moved on Wednesday.

I think the Family Blogging Challenge is a great way to have more and more relatives comment. I can not wait for my family to comment. Do you think your family will comment?

    From,
    Sydney =)

P.S. I got the idea of saying' This is my first comment from my new house' from a boy named Ben (But I really did move).

  9. Dear Mrs. Yollis and Jaxon,
I'm so excited about being able to be part of this blogging experience. I look forward to reading about your classroom experiences and learning more about what you are learning! It is great to be integrating technology, in a new way, into the curriculum of your class -- what fun!

    Thanks for inviting me in,
    Doritt (aka Jaxon Novack's 'Dodo')

  10. @ Kathleen,

Thank you for your kind words! I'm always looking for ways to include parents and extended family. We'll see how it all works out! :-)

Already we have comments from cousins, parents, siblings, and three from my eighty year old mom!

Enjoy the rest of your vacation!

    @ Mrs. Lynch,

Thanks for your compliment! We hope it will bring more people into our online community. That makes everything more fun!

    @ Sydney,

It's funny how both you and Ben recently moved! I like the idea of the first comment from the new house!

You asked me if I thought my family would comment. Yes, they will! In fact, my mother left three comments on Saturday! See if you can find them! Also, my cousins who live in Seattle said they would comment as well.

Our Family Blogging Challenge is off to a great start!

    @ Doritt (aka Jaxon's Dodo),

Welcome to our blog! We're glad that you are visiting and leaving such a wonderful comment! Jaxon is an excellent student and very knowledgeable about blogging. We hope you come back soon!

    Sincerely,
    Mrs. Yollis

  12. Dear Mrs. Yollis and Class,

We actually took our first trip to Las Vegas during this break. This was Richie's very first time in Las Vegas, Nevada. Richie's little sister had never gone to a trip and Richie felt very good to show his sister a wonderful time. He also learned a great deal an is anxious to share his new experience with his class.

    Thank you.

    All the Best,

    Aussie Anaya(Richie's mom)

  13. Mrs. Yollis,
You have a great idea to teach your students about how to comment in blogging. It is the first step towards having blogs and knowing how this all works.

  14. Wow that sure is a good way to learn about commenting. That's like when our techer showed the class about webspiration. If you want to check it out here's the link http://www.mywebspiration.com/
let me know what you think

  15. I really like your idea about inviting family to comment on your blog. Are they going to be commenting from home or are they going to come to your classroom?

  16. @ Sydney,

You're welcome for your comment back! Yes, my proud mum left several comments. She was at my house for several days celebrating her 80th birthday, so she got a chance to read several post. She is an outstanding contributor to our Family Blogging Challenge! I think she left five comments in all. One...to Miss McGeady who sent her Happy Birthday wishes! :-)

I hope your aunt will comment, too! We have so many family members so far!

    @ Mrs. Anaya (Richie's mom),

We look forward to hearing all about the trip to Nevada! What fun!

    Sincerely,
    Mrs. Yollis

  17. @ Connor,

Thanks for your compliment about teaching commenting to my students. It is the first step toward having a blog. They really enjoy visiting blogs and try very hard to leave 2-point comments.

    @ Travis,

Thanks for visiting our blog and for leaving a comment. I have never used webspiration with my third graders. How have you used it? I'd be very curious to know. Maybe I'll try it!

    @ Tara,

Like you, I like the idea of including family members in the online community! It's more fun when everyone is involved.

Already we have received comments from siblings, cousins, grandparents...even my 80 year old mom left five different comments! Fun!

You asked if they comment from school or from home. We are on spring vacation right now, so all comments are coming from home. We are fortunate, everyone in the class has access to a computer, so commenting is very easy.

Are all of you from The Ripple Effect? Just curious!

    Thanks again!

    Your friend,
    Mrs. Yollis

  18. Dear Mrs. Yollis,

I am having the family over next Sunday to celebrate my birthday, and I will make sure they comment. I taught my grandma how to comment last night.

    Warm regards,

P.S. My birthday was on Tuesday the sixth.

  21. Dear Mrs. Yollis,

It is finally here! Family blogging Month is very exiting. My parents would love to comment on our blog. I told my mom and dad, "If you have time left after work you can leave a comment on our blog!" My dad already left one!

  22. Hello everyone from Seoul, South Korea!

I heard that you were reading and learning about South Korea and New York city this week in class and what a coincidence, I am there right now! I am in Seoul, the capital city of South Korea.

Seoul is alot like New York City. It has lots of people, taxis and tall buildings. There are many Americans that live and work in Seoul and they are known as "expatriates." There is also a large American army base in South Korea. Korea has four distinct seasons like New York, and the best months to travel to South Korea are in April and October when the weather is pleasant and mild. I hope you can all visit South Korea in the near future.

    Sincerely,

    Ethan's Dad

  23. Dear Mrs. Yollis,

I am sure I am going to win Family Blogging Month in May. I will try to get my cousins to blog. However, I have many cousins, so I better do it one at a time. I was thinking that Panda should be included to and his family.

    Best wishes,
    Dad, Janine, Trey, Mom

  24. Dear Mrs. Yollis,

Andrew and I love participating in family blogging month. We are going to send an email to our family this afternoon asking them to participate.

Andrew and I just logged on to the eagle cam and we saw at least two chicks. Does anyone know how many chicks hatched?

    Happy Commenting!
