Fun With Original Photos :: Student Blogging Challenge

Images can bring a blog post to life and draw in a reader. As a blogger, it is important to use images correctly. Do NOT just search Google Images and take what you want! Learn how to use images correctly!

For the Student Blogging Challenge, we are having Fun With PhotosHere are some image options on a poster from Mrs. Morris.

This week's focus will be creating original images that complement a blog post. Of the tasks below, our class will be creating images that tell a story. Students will use their own original photos in a post on their blog.

How Does It Feel When Your Work is Stolen?

To help students understand the concept of "intellectual property theft" (also know as taking someone else's work) I played a trick on my students. I put up their original artwork but put someone else's name on each piece.

When the students saw what I was doing, they told me that their artwork had the wrong name. I told them, "It doesn't matter. I need to get this bulletin board finished before recess."

Later in the day, I confessed that I posted the incorrect names on purpose. What followed was a wonderful conversation about the importance of getting credit for work produced. Also, we talked about how awful it feels to take credit for a classmate's work. One of my student bloggers wrote a wonderful post about the experience

Here is a video of the trick from a few years ago!

How to Create an Image That Tells a Story

A great image on a blog post can really help "tell a story". For example, the picture we created to complement the artwork trick is below.

I directed the students to put their arms in a gesture of confusion. Not showing the faces was a purposeful part of the digital creation. Always limit personal information!

We looked at a few great samples of photos from the Yollis 365 Blog that tell a story.

1. Here is a photo that tells the story of a mischievous dog named Buck who came to school to "help" clean up.

2. This photo is about a dog named Buck who is not interested in a Santa costume!

3. This photo tells the story of a student who is learning cursive.

Some New Student Photos!

Students have been taking photos using an Acer, an ipad, or a smart phone and using the photos to write blog posts for the Student Blogging Challenge.

Enjoy!

Big Burt tells the story of his family's new kitchen backsplash. Notice that his dad is putting them in place. This photo helps tells the story of the backsplash.

"Casey Cherry's" picture tells the story of the London Eye
Here is a view for you!

"Jodie Bloom" included a photo that tells the story the Eiffel Tower.

Here is a photo by "Dr. Hagle". It shows a close up of a painted lady butterfly.

My student bloggers, here is a link for you to share your URL for your new post with your original photo. Be sure you have the right URL! Fun With Photos Google Form

What do you think of the original photos?

How does creating your own images make your blog post special?

Mrs. Yollis and her students love blogging! They are excited about joining other bloggers from all over the world to learn together!

What countries are participating?

What are some of the tasks for this week?

Our teacher is Mrs. Yollis. She has been teaching elementary school for 32 years and has been an educational blogger for 11 years. She is the administrator of this class blog, but also runs a class photo-of-the-day blog. It is called the Yollis 365 Project, and it is a fabulous place to share photos, creative writing, and poetry!

Meet the Third Graders

Our class is a third-grade class filled with 11 boys and 15 girls. We are 1:1 with Acers, so we love integrating technology. For example, we LOVE watching BrainpopJr videos, looking at the National Weather Service's forecast, educating ourselves with Freckle,  creating and sharing our learning with Seesaw, and "going places" using the Chrome Extension Earth View

Meet Beverly the bear, Barnaby Bones, and Flat Panda!

When not at school, the class has a lot of hobbies and interests. We are only about 20 miles from the Pacific Ocean, so many students like to collect shells, swim, boogie board, climb the rocks, search for sea glass, build sand castles, and surf. One student recently went deep sea fishing and caught over 18 fish, some sand dabs and rockfish. Several students have made the trip to Catalina Island.

Sports are a big part of everyone's life. Numerous students play soccer. Handball is popular, and so is baseball. At recess, some popular games are prisoner, jump roping, kickball, soccer, tetherball, dodgeball, and hula hooping.

One student goes to the local public pool to do laps.

Food is an important part of life and we have many favorites! Some popular foods at lunch are pizza, hot dogs, corn dogs, pasta, and chicken nuggets. Sometimes they serve pancakes!

For fun, we like to play Silent Speed Ball, learn sign language from one of Mrs. Yollis' former students, and of course, juggling!

 Our Avatars

We used Seesaw and our Acer cameras to make avatars. An avatar is an image used to represent you online. Notice how we limited our personal information!

Where Are We?
πŸ”»πŸ”»πŸ”»πŸ”»πŸ”»πŸ”»πŸ”»πŸ”»πŸ”»πŸ”»

Mrs. Yollis' third graders live in the northern hemisphere. It is fall. North America is our continent. Our nation is the United States of America. However, sometimes our country is abbreviated as the U.S.A. or America. Our country is divided up into fifty states, and we live in one of the fifty states, California.

California

California is the third largest state after Alaska and Texas. Out of all the 50 states, we have the largest population. There are more than 39 million Californians! Our state capital is Sacramento, and our largest urban area is Los Angeles. We live in a suburb of LA.

Here is the Californian flag.

What hemisphere and country do you live in?

What are some popular foods and games played at your school?

What fun games do you play for a brain break?

What questions do you have for us?
We will reply to your comments.

Tell us about your class!

Students Present at Texas Google Summit!

This morning, Mrs. Yollis and a handful of student bloggers went to Texas to participate in the Texas Google Summit

Wait, to get from Mrs. Yollis' class to Texas would require a 4.5 hour plane ride and would cost $500 per plane ticket!

Instead, we presented via Google HangOut On Air!

Welcome to a video recording of our session!
Blogging is Learning!

To share our presentation we:

1. Accepted the Google HangOut On Air invitation.
2. Screenshared our desktop. (We were worried because we got that tunnel of desktops!)
3. Minimized the GHO screen. (Which removed the tunnel.)
4. Opened our Chrome tab with our Google Presentation.
5. Clicked present...and we were in business!
6. After the presentation, we minimized our Chrome tab.
7. Opened up the GHO window.
8. Stopped the screensharing of our desktop.
9. Answered questions from our fabulous Texan audience.

Here is a link to Mrs. Yollis' Educational Blogging Wiki. It is a great resource for teacher!

We enjoyed sharing our love of blogging with you!

Thank you, #TxGoo, for the invitation!
Yee haw for #TeamYollis!

What was something you learn from watching our presentation?

Do you have any additional questions we can answer?
