In New Zealand its not Summer, its the middle of Winter. We also have our school year nearly half way through. We are at a small rural school in New Zealand - we're in a place called Taranaki, next to a Volcano and with Cows on three sides of our school.

DeleteThank you so much for your wonderful comment on our blog. Our students were very excited to see and hear from you. It inspired our students to film another video explaining the words and slowing down the speaking. They were very, very excited to think that you might be learning to play a traditional Maori game taught by our students in the USA. We'd LOVE it if you could film a little bit, as it is very authentic learning.
We do live next to a volcano. We will take some photographs of it tomorrow and send them through. We will also take some photos of some of the Cows near our school.
The population of our town, where our school is would be about 100. We have a school of 200 students who get the bus to school from up to half an hour away. 95% of students at our school live on farms and are involved in the dairy industry. The biggest farms that we have can have up to 1,000 dairy cows on them and lots of our students are involved in things like milking and calving.

Hi! My name is Sean. I am in Mrs. Yollis' third grade class this year. I am looking forward to meeting her. Over the summer, I went to Hawaii where I went paddle boarding, swimming and surfing. I just got back two days ago. I also went to camp at UCLA for soccer, baseball and basketball. See you tomorrow!

Your trip to Hawaii sure sounds fun! When Mr. Yollis and I were in Hawaii, we tried a little surfing too. It was very difficult to catch a wave, and I often missed it. Then I had to turn my board around, paddle back out, and try again. I did manage to make it up a few times!

DeleteYes I did go snorkeling. I saw so many fish! I did not see the state fish of Hawaii but I did see sea turtles. Did you know that sea turtles can hold their breath for five hours and when they come up out of the water, they are usually just looking at the people around them? One night when I was at a luau with my family and friends, we saw a dolphin jump up out of the ocean. It was very fun.

I also went to San Francisco, New York and New Jersey. In New York, I stayed with my grandparents while my brother, Royce, went to Washington, D.C. with my mother.

I am sorry to hear that you had a plumbing leak at your house. We had a leak in our floor one time, but we did not have to move out. The plumber came and dug a big hole in the floor, found the break, patched it, and covered it back up. It was funny to see dirt beneath the bedroom floor!

I was in Minnesota for about three weeks. We all had fun swimming and watching Buck jump in the lake! I wish that we had a lake nearby so we could take a refreshing swim with Buck more often.

ReplyDeleteI am one of Mrs. Yollis' former students, Tabby's brother, Royce. I am so excited for you guys to learn and have fun with Mrs. Yollis! She was the best teacher I have ever had! Seriously, she's amazing! I hope you have a wonderful year in her class!
Over my summer, I went to my grandparent's house in New York! I had so much fun hanging out with them all day! One day we even went into New York City and saw a Broadway play! You might have heard of it. It's called The Lion King! My personal favorite part was when some of the animals walked down the aisles next to me! After a week of fun-filed activities, I went to Washington, D.C with my mom and a family friend! We saw The White House, The Capitol building, (we even toured that!) The Washington Monument, the Bureau of Engraving (that's where they make the money) and many more famous monuments! The entire trip was incredibly fun! After Washington, D.C, we hopped on the airplane and said "goodbye" to the east coast, but I wished that we could have stayed longer!
Please tell me how your summer went if you have the chance! I would love to hear about it!

Hi. My name is Leah. I am so excited for third grade. I have a new baby sister named Kaia. I like to dance, cook and act. Over the summer I went to Bass Lake. I went on my uncle's boat. I went to a campfire and went horseback riding. That was my favorite part of the summer.

ReplyDeleteI had a great summer! I caught 2 rainbow trout and my mom cooked them and we had rainbow trout with capers and lemon for dinner. It was delicious! We went to Palm Springs and it was so hot. It was strange because it hailed as we were driving through Palm Springs even though it was so hot. My family went on 2 guided hikes in Palm Springs, we had to go at 7AM because later it gets too hot. We saw a king snake on one of our hikes.We also went to Santa Barbara. It was a great summer. I look forward to a great year!

ReplyDeleteI am excited to be a third grader in your class. This summer I went to Sports Plus camp. I also went to Las Vegas with my family. I rode the Desperado roller coaster at state line. I also rode ghost rider at Knott's Berry Farm.
As you can see, I like roller coasters and anything adventurous. Like skateboarding, surfing, and riding go carts at MB2. I love to play and watch all kinds of sports, but my favorite one is baseball.
My older brother Dominick wanted you as his 3rd grade teacher, but he didn't get you. I live with my mom, dad, and brother. My mom also teaches 3rd grade at Lupin Hill.

Our town is indeed located in a rural area. The town has a population of around 900 people, and about 1000 if we include the farms within 20 miles or so.
Our school has around 200 students, ranging from 5-18 years old.

ReplyDeleteI can't believe another summer has passed! I was excited about the new school year, and I always wondered who would be in my class.
Over the summer, I went to Yellowstone National Park. Just like you, Mrs. Yollis, I also drove! The drive was actually kind of entertaining because my car had a television, my parents and grandparents chatted with my brother and me, and I had Rocky to play with! Rocky was in a cage because he shedded too much, and I was in the back with him! Through the holes I patted him. Mostly, he slept, but when he was awake, I would look at him and scratch him where he likes it.
When we finally arrived at Yellowstone, we drove around to different landmarks. Most of them were geysers, rivers, or waterfalls. One of them was Old Faithful. The geyser was timed to be about 92 minutes (1 hour and 32 minutes), and we waited for one to erupt. 30 minutes passed when we saw lots of smoke and water started to bubble out. Then one shot into the air! "It's about 100 feet," somebody said.
There were a lot more geysers, but there are too many to write.
Now, I have some tips for the new bloggers:
1. If you want to show more excitement, use more words, not more exclamation marks.
2. Always start your sentence with a capital letter, and end it with a punctuation mark, exclamation mark, or a question mark, not a comma.
3. If a word is a proper noun, start the word with a capital letter.
4. Compliment the writer in some kind of way.
5. Add new information.
6. Make a connection with the writer!
7. End your comment with a question so that you can get a conversation.
8. Don't repeat yourself.
9. Use a greeting and an ending.
10. Use high level vocabulary.

There is so much for your students to learn about blogging. I know they will enjoy your lessons and get a lot out of being part of a blogging community.
Our suburb is growing rapidly as there are a lot of new houses being built. The population in 2011 was just over 10,000 but I would say it has risen a lot more since then.
The population of the school I used to work at is now over 800. It has grown a lot since I started teaching there 10 years ago. Does your school have a growing population too?

ReplyDeleteI am so excited that this year, since I'm retired and no longer teaching at your school, I get to be your blogging buddy! I also hope to visit your classroom from time to time!
I enjoyed a relaxing summer enjoying gardening in my backyard and spending time at the beach. A highlight of the summer was camping in the Eastern Sierra Nevada Mountains with Mr. Ranney in our new travel trailer. We enjoyed breathing in the fresh mountain air, viewing the colorful wildflowers, and hiking some rugged trails up over 12,000 feet above sea level!
Tomorrow I'll be taking a trip to the Los Angeles Harbor to spend time at the Tall Ships Festival. I'll be sure to send in a photo for the 365 blog!
I wish you all the best in third grade. I know you'll listen well and follow all Mrs. Yollis' instructions! If you do, you're sure to have a successful third grade year!

I had a wonderful time at the Tall Ships Festival yesterday and wanted to leave a quick comment with you this morning, so I could share a post I've just published: http://ranneysrecord.blogspot.com/2014/08/terrific-tall-ships.html
I will tell you that many of the ships were over 100 feet tall. Tall ships are sailing vessels with tall masts. It was interesting to me that, although they are called tall ships, the emphasis seems to be more on how long and how wide they are!
If you check out my post, you will also see a photo of the largest rubber duck in the world, which was on display at the festival!
I hope it is "smooth sailing" in class today with Captain Yollis!

I remember when I first met Mrs Yollis no more to the point when I first started blogging with Mrs Yollis it was way back in 2010. My daughter was lucky enough to have Mrs Morris as her teacher and introduced BB to blogging and of course I went along for the ride and I truly loved it.
The greatest thing about blogging is the wonderful connections and friendships you make. Just like Mrs Morris and Mrs Yollis now that is special.

Dear Mrs Yollis and your new 3rd Graders

My name is Mrs Monaghan, and I am a teacher in a small primary school in the north of England. My class has been blogging with Mrs Yollis' class for a little while, and really enjoy sharing ideas and projects - last year, your class even appeared in our local newspaper! Our town has a 900 year old castle and is famous for its race horses. Our school has around 60 pupils, and my class has 15 children in the morning and 30 in the afternoon. I hope we get to share a whole lot more this year, too!
It sounds like you have had some interesting and exciting holidays. This summer, I went to Scotland with my family (my husband is Scottish and we used to live in Glasgow). We spent a few days in Glasgow for the Commonwealth Games, then headed to the islands - Mull and Skye - where we camped, walked, climbed mountains, swam in icy mountain streams, visited ancient monuments and even entertained a little mouse who moved into our tent with us for a few days, and nibbled our supplies!
I hope your year gets off to a wonderful start, and we look forward to blogging with you over the coming year.

DeleteThe opportunity to blog with teachers, students and friends all over the world is one of the most exciting and wonderful aspects of this blog! I feel fortunate that my son is in Mrs. Yollis' class this year and this is one of the many reasons I have for feeling that way!
What small town in northern England exactly do you teach in? While in Italy last month, we met a wonderful family from Liverpool. They had two children close in age to mine and they really bonded.
Is your town famous for raising racehorses (like the state of Kentucky is here) or do you have a famous racetrack where they actually run? We traveled to Siena too while in Italy, where I understand they have a famous horse race as well; running bareback around the great big piazza in the middle of town, which sounds a little dangerous yet exciting! Does anyone know the name of that race?
Your trip to Scotland sounds like it was wonderful. You were kind to entertain that little mouse, although I'm fairly certain it was not by choice. :)

DeleteBlogging with Mrs Yollis' class is a rich and rewarding experience for everyone (myself included!), and you obviously appreciate the wonderful opportunities provided for your children. Thank you for replying to my comment - I had already noted that you had been to Europe on your holiday; that sounded like a wonderful experience for your family. I love Italy - we visited Rome and Naples a few years back, and then more recently Venice and Lake Garda on an inter rail trip. I love the language, the landscape and of course the food (especially the ice cream!) I would love to visit Tuscany one day - Siena sounds beautiful, and I've seen films of the Palio - it looks like utter madness!
Our school is in Middleham, and the nearest cities are about 50 miles away - York, Newcastle or Leeds. However, I have many friends from Liverpool, a beautiful, warm and vibrant city with a reputation for friendliness and banter, so it doesn't surprise me that you made good friends with a family from there.
Around fifteen different trainers work out of the stables in Middleham, which is famous for training racehorses. Early in the morning, all the horses are ridden up through the town out onto the moor to be exercised, and it's a wonderful sight. The largest of the stables has around 200 horses. Many of the children in my class have parents who work in the industry.
I wonder if your children will keep in touch with their pals in Liverpool? I hope so!

DeleteThank you for the reply to my post. I'm sorry it took me so long to get back to you. Yes, I must agree, that blogging with Mrs. Yollis and her class is a wonderful and rich experience. We learned this 2 years ago when my daughter was in her class and now we get to have fun in here again with my son Ty.
You are so fortunate to live in England where so much history and beauty is so near, whether it be in England itself, Italy or so many other incredible places. We absolutely loved Rome! We missed Naples, but saw nearby Pompeii. Did you visit the museum in Naples? I hear much of the artifacts from Pompeii are kept there. Venice is just extraordinary. We did not get as far north as Lake Garda. I understand it is beautiful. We almost went up there since, I think, there is a large amusement park for kids. Time, however, did not permit. We missed seeing the Palio by about one week. I would have loved to! Sounds crazy!
I really enjoyed reading your post about Middleham and its racehorses. What an incredible sight to see the racehorses each morning coming through your town. Is there any chance you might be able to post a photo of that? As a horse lover, I would love it! I'm sure the kids here would enjoy that too. Since many of your children's parents work in the industry, do most of the children in your class ride too? We had a horse until about 2-3 years ago when I had to give him away due to lack of time. However, I am seriously considering buying another one. There is something so special about being around them.
You definitely should visit Tuscany one day and Umbria too. The little hilltop towns are magical.We stayed in a 2,000 year old monastery, a castle and a villa in a teeny tiny village while in those spots.
I hope my kids will keep in touch with their Liverpool friends. One sweet Italian girl who worked in one of the hotels we stayed in has already emailed me a couple of times. Perhaps she will come for a visit. I hope so!

Over my summer, I did a multitude of things. The first thing I did was read the complete Harry Potter series. Harry Potter is fiction. My favorite character was obviously, Harry. He's very athletic, he's fearless, (literately), and an amazing Seeker in the game of Quidditch. I also read Percy Jackson, which was another great series.
I went to Wisconsin. I saw many relatives there, and I went to Mall of America, which is located in Minneapolis, Minnesota. Mall of America is the must biggest mall in America, maybe the world. IT IS HUGE! I also went to a house on a lake. I caught many fish there, including a walleye. I drove a boat around the lake, paddle boarded, kayaked and went in a paddle boat.

ReplyDeleteOver the summer, I went to a place called Mountasia. When I got there, they had go-carts, bumper boats, and a rock climbing wall. The rock climbing wall was scary, but I climbed the easiest one and finished it. I made it half way up the medium one.
My cousins also visited this summer. We went to the beach with them. I boogie boarded in the waves.

Over the summer, I went to India to visit my extended family and friends that live there. We had a wonderful trip, and we visited several glorious cities in India

She is the most optimistic, polite, and astute teacher anyone can ever have. You all are very fortunate to have a teacher like her for third grade.

ReplyDeleteWe are a Year 3 (Second Grade) class of 29 children from Meadowbank School in Remuera, Auckland, New Zealand. We are in a suburb of Auckland city and only 15 minutes from the city center.
Our school has two sites a Junior and Senior campus. The two sites are separated by a bushed gully and stream which are utilised in science and environmental studies. Our class is in the Senior site.
We have been busy getting ready for our art exhibition coming up in a couple of weeks. We're excited to display our artwork for our parents.

ReplyDeleteYesterday I went to a Dodgers game for one of my friend's birthday party. We went with 3 adults and 5 kids.We left early so we could see them practice. For dinner we had Dodger dogs,chicken,fruit and for dessert we had ice cream with sprinkles.Then we went on the field and got the player's autographs. Next,there is something called "kids take the field" where you get one player to sign your ball. I had A.J. Ellis, the team's catcher sign my ball. Then we got to our seats and watched the game. Matt Kemp hit a home run in the second inning. At the end of the game, the score was 2-1 Dodgers. We saw fireworks because it was firework Friday. Then we dropped every body off back home. I got home at 11:45 pm. I got sunglasses, a bobble head and a Dodger helmet. Did you ever see a live Dodger game before?

She cares a lot about her father and for her country. I liked when she said she didn't want any gold but instead wanted to go back home to her family.
