Fun With Opacity!

In science, we are learning about light. Today we learned that some kinds of matter block light. If an object blocks light it is opaque (oh PAYK).

We went outside and created animals using our opaque hands!

    Dear Mrs Yollis and class,

I have to say that this post was very interesting!

I think it is really cool how you can make shadows into shapes!
When I was little my Mum and Dad use to shine a light on my wall and make pictures with their hands, sometimes I still do it but it doesn't put me to sleep.

I really like the second photo because you can clearly see a dog and it looks really affective. GOOD JOB GUYS!

  2. Dear Mrs. Yollis,

I really enjoyed this post. I had a lot of fun watching the boys and girls making shapes today after class. I knew exactly what the shapes of the animals were except for photo number five. My favorite picture is photo number three because it looks like the dogs are yelling at each other.

In my house we have a lot of opaque objects. The first opaque object that popped into my head was my big sister's guitar. It would be easier to count the transparent and translucent objects in my house.

    Sincerely,
    Alexandra

  3. Dear Mrs. Yollis,

Here is what I think the numbered shadows are:

    1. Cat
    2. Red Riding Hood with a wolf
    3. Two dogs fighting
    4. Bunny
    5. Turkey
    6. Superman "S"
    7. Hummingbird

Here are some opaque objects in my house:
    1. Jasper, my dog
    2. Roman, my brother
    3. My glass shower door when it gets fogged up
    4. My swingset

I enjoyed looking at the shadows the kids made at our school. I like making a shadow of a snake wiggling his tongue.

    Maya

  4. What super hand shadows - I bet you had fun doing that! I was surprised that it was sunny enough to go outside and make shadow puppets, it's been so dull and dreary here in England that you get to thinking everywhere is the same!
We are hoping to make some shadow puppets next term, so I shall remember this post to show my students when we do that!
I thought picture 3 was very clever, where you had two dogs (or a dog and a wolf?) barking at each other! Did you make up some new ones of your own too?

  5. @ Alexandra,

    I liked your comment!

I loved all the shapes, and my favorite one is number three too.
I think I know what number five is.It is a rooster.

In my house I have some opaque things like plates and a vase. There are chairs, tables and many other opaque objects too.

My mom and I are planning to make shadow puppets over the weekend.
Maybe we should try doing that sometime. I'm sure it would be fun!

    Atrina

  7. Hello Mrs. Yollis and class,

Light is an interesting phenomenon. We're only aware of it if our eyes sense it.

Now here's something interesting for you...

Did you know we can only see in our shadows because the air molecules refract ('bend') the light whereas larger dust particles reflect it?

If we were able to travel to the Moon where there is virtually no atmosphere, shadows would be very dark. We wouldn't be able to see anything in the shadows.

Here on Earth, the gas molecules and dust particles allow light into the shadow and we can see details. It's very interesting.

Can you imagine how easy it would be to play Hide and Seek if you could simply disappear into a shadow?

And your shadow animals? They would be very dark. :)

  8. Dear Mrs. Yollis,

This post interested me because the shadow puppets look like they are real objects. Here is what I think each one is:

    1) A cat

    2) A dog/rabbit barking at a girl

    3) My dog TJ barking at my Aunt's dog Tito

    4) A rabbit

    5) An upside down cow's udder

    6) A four legged spider with an S on its back

    7) A dove

There are many opaque objects in my house. In my bedroom my dresser, hats, bed, closet door, and chair are all opaque. In the living room there are also opaque objects. Some of them are a fireplace, table, sofa, television, carpet, pillows, and some special objects.

What do you think the shadow puppets resemble?

After opaque objects will we be learning about translucent objects?

    Sincerely,
    Rexon

  10. Hello Mrs Yollis' Class

We like your blog. We didn't know what opaque was until we read your blog!

We would like to tell you what we learnt and what we thought the different shapes are.

Most of us thought the first shape was a cat. We thought the second shape was a wolf, the third were dogs, the fourth was a rabbit or a hare.
We thought the fifth shape was a cockatoo.
We really liked the letter 's'. It was very clever. On a sunny day we will try it but it is raining today so it is not a good day for making shadows.
We thought the last shape was some type of bird.

We talked about things in our house that are opaque. We named things like the roof, walls, curtains, blinds, paper and posters.

We will come back and read your blog another time.
