A famous Italian toy whistle!
He brought an array of gifts, including 50 centimeters of chocolate!
(Does anyone know what this kind of array means? It's not an array of rows and columns.)

Today he was here in our classroom!

Everyone loved meeting Nonno in person!

  1. Dear Nonno,

It was really fun meeting you in person. I always wondered how you looked and how you sounded, now I know!

Thank you for teaching us so much about Italy. I learned so much by reading your posts, my favorite is the one about Trullis. Today, I learned about the famous Italian toy whistle, the cuccu, which was popular in the 1950's. All the children wanted it!

I really enjoyed your visit to our classroom.

    Did you like visiting us?

Will you be coming back soon?

    Sincerely,
    Hannah

  7. Dear Nonno,

It was very fun meeting you today! My favorite thing you brought from Italy was the Trulli. I liked how it was made of stone. I thought you looked and sounded very different than I thought you would.

How many countries have you been to?
When are you going back to Italy?

    Yours truly,
    Tucker:-)

  8. Dear Nonno,

As I was looking at the pictures taken from you and the rest of the class today, the first thing that caught my eyes was the Kinder Chocolate. The kids were very lucky I wasn't in the classroom today. You want to know why? Well, the chocolate on the table would no longer exist. Allow me to explain, I grew up with Kinder Chocolate in Germany. There is absolutely, positively, no yummier chocolate in this world than the kind you brought from Italy.

My husband and I traveled to Italy in the year 2000 and 2001, two years in a row. We visited Rome, my all time favorite, Capri, Venice, Florence, and Milan. I loved the hospitable nature of the people there.

One night, my husband and I decided to go to a restaurant in Rome. Marty confidently ordered a pizza, pretending to know how to pronounce the words on the menu. With a sparkle in his eyes he told me that he knew exactly what he ordered. Half an hour later, the waiter comes to our table and brings us a pizza with several sunny side eggs topped on it. You should have seen the surprised look on Marty's face. Let me reassure you, that he never got to order another meal on my behalf for the rest of our stay.

It is my hope that one day we will have a chance to visit Italy again, this time with Adia and her little brother, Stefan. I will be sure to take along a dictionary for our next trip, though.

Thank you so much for sharing with our kids your traveling experience, and opening their hearts and minds to the incredible world we live in. It is truly priceless.

What was your favorite experience in Italy?

Do you have any intention to travel to Italy again? If yes, what cities would you like to visit next?

    Be blessed,

Ava (Adia's Kinder Chocolate-loving MAMA, who can't stand sunny side eggs)

  9. Dear Nonno,

It was a pleasure meeting you in person. My favorite toy that you brought is the famous Italian toy whistle, the cuckoo. Did you play with it when you were little too? The Trulli replica was nice too. Those cookies and chocolate were scrumptious!:) The cookies tasted like pancakes!:).

Thank you for sharing your experiences in person and bringing us so many nice things.

  10. Dear Nonno,

It was a lot of fun meeting you. Yesterday morning I was so surprised when Mrs. Yollis announced that you would be in our classroom after our recess time. Wow!

That was so very thoughtful of you to be kind enough to come all the way from Italy and bring us goodies and some toy figures from there. The treats were very delicious!

I learned that the toy whistle, also known as cuccu, was very famous.

What was surprising to me was that you brought Kinder chocolate. I love it!

I would like to tell you a story that made me love Kinder chocolate:

One warm Summer day, my mom asked me, " Would you like to try a kind of chocolate that I grew up with and that I ate for breakfast, lunch, and dinner?" Of course, I said yes.

I love all kinds of chocolate (except ones with nuts), so probably I would like the taste. " Are there nuts in the chocolate?" I questioned her.

If there were nuts I would definitely absolutely not eat the candy. My mom answered with a big "No!". I was happy about that answer.

So we hopped into the car and my mother drove me to the German Market. We quickly found the chocolate area and bought the Kinder chocolate.

We drove back home and there I ate the delicious chocolate. "Mmm! What luscious chocolate." I ate about seven more pieces and fortunately, I did not get sick. Lucky me!

Now, I am four years older and still love it. What a happy ending to the story!

I hope you can visit us again!

    Sincerely,
    Adia ★ ♥ ♣ ♦ ★

  11. Dear Mrs. Yollis and students,

What a thrill it must have been to meet Nonno! It seems that the most wonderful gifts he gave you were his presence and the sharing of his knowledge. Our world is not so big after all! :)

  12. @ Nonno,

It was a so much fun to meet you at our class.I liked the kinders that you brought us. When I was in Spain I ate a kinder, but it was not like the ones that you brought to our class, they were chocolate coverd eggs. Once you bite the egg, there is a toy inside of it.

What is it like traveling Italy?

    What was your favorite place?

  13. Dear Hanna

I enjoyed my visit with your class. All of you have very good questions. The cuccu certainly is nice and I think they have been making them longer than you might think, long before 1950. Hopefully I will be back in the United States in the spring, after ski season.

    Ciao
    Nonno

    Dear Kristen
I thought the cuccu whistle was a perfect thing to bring your class when I saw them being made in Matera. I like all of Italy and all the special places with so much history.

    Nonno

    Dear Tucker
I go back tgo Italy in December, just next month. I have visited about 15 different countries.

    A Presto

    Dear Ava - Adia's Mamma

Yes Italy is special. I had a similar experience with the pizza in Rome on my first trip abroad in 1967, eggs in the middle. That was in a little pizzeria near Largo di Torre Argentina. An interesting square in Rome, that hosts four Republican Roman temples, and the remains of Pompey's Theater. Also a cat sanctuary.

I was a history major in college so all of Italy is my favorite, it also helps that my mother made me take Latin in high school. I also enjoyed Tuscany, Liguria, Umbria and le Marche on several trips there. Also the Dolomites (pronounced Dolowmeetees). Emilia–Romagna , home to Bologna, Parma, Modena Ferrara and of course Ferrari, Laborghini and Maserati. I have visited the coast area of the province for a night or two while enroute elsewhere.

I will return to Italy in mid December, I actually live in Italy most of the year but will return to the USA in spring, after ski season.

    Dear Adia

What a wonderful story about your first Kinder. In Italy the commercials for Kinder all have Italian Olympic athletes and their childrent in them. Kinder is made by the company Ferrero in Italy and here in the United States they sell the candy Ferrero Rocher, so keep that in mind when you need to get your mom something special.

    Nonno

    Dear Nicolas

In Italy a lot or people travel by train. There is a lot of traffic in some places so the train is much better than driving (and trying to park). My favorit place is all of Italy but I also like a lot where I live and I will blog about that village later.

  15. Dear Nonno,

    I loved the sweet chocolates.
The best part of it was vanilla inside the chocolates.

  16. Dear Mrs. Yollis,
Hi I'm Ben's cousin Julie. I really enjoyed looking at all the class photos with Nonno. Also how did you like the Italian chocolate Nonno brought?

  17. Dear Nonno,

It was really fun meeting you in person. I really wanted to know what you look like and if you look like Ben. You look different.

Thank you for teaching us about Italy. It was really fun. I have learned so much about Italy from you. My favorite post that you did was about the Trullis because it was fun to see what the houses look like in Italy. They look very different from the houses in our community. The roof-tops in Italy are round, which look different to me.

I have some questions for you:
Did you like visiting our classroom?
    What is your favorite post?
