Meet the Dictionary!

A resource that we have used quite frequently this year is the dictionary. To celebrate this great book, we made a Do Ink video celebrating the dictionary. There are many parts!

Enjoy!

We created this movie on the ipad using a green screen, Do Ink, iMovie, and the camera roll.

An online dictionary has many of the same features!

What are some words that you have looked up?

Please, help us learn your word by leaving us an
original example sentence!

Rounding Numbers :: Video Tutorial

In class, we have been working on rounding numbers!
Here are the rules for rounding:

Radical Rounding Rules!

1. Underline the place value position to which you are rounding.

2. Write which two tens or two hundreds the number is between.

3. Draw an arrow to the neighbor on the right.

4. Think:  ♬ ♫  "If the neighbor next door is 5 or more, round up, round up!" ♫ ♬
     (If the neighbor is a 5, 6, 7, 8, or 9 round up. If the neighbor is a 4, 3, 2, 1, or 0 round down.)

5. If it's not 5 or more, round down!

6. Circle the correct estimate/answer.

Here is a video tutorial we made last year to demonstrate the rules for rounding!

Watch the slide show and try the quiz to practice
your rounding skills!

Tutorial: A Multiplication Strategy

REMINDER: Edublog Award voting is open until December 15. We are nominated in THREE categories. Please consider voting!  Click here to give us your thumbs up/like.

We have been learning about multiplication.

Sometimes we encounter a large multiplication sentence and we don't know the product. We learned a strategy called:  Break the Large Array into Two Smaller Arrays and Add the Products

Here is a fabulous tutorial explaining the process

for 5 x 7 = ?

Here is another tutorial. Again, it is modeling how to split a large array into two smaller arrays to get the final product.

What did you think of the multiplication strategy?

What did you think of the tutorial?

Give us a large multiplication sentence that we can practice splitting into two smaller arrays to solve.

Video Tutorials: What Are Quadrilaterals?

In our polygon unit, we are learning about four-sided figures called

QUADRILATERALS!

Tutorial: Subtracting Across a Zero

Today we reviewed how to subtract 3-digit and 4-digit numbers. Normally, we just borrow from the place value position to the left. However, today there was a zero and we couldn't borrow!

Here is a video showing one strategy for subtracting when the neighbor is a zero.

How did it work for you?

Did you find any problems where there were TWO zeros?
What did you do?

How Does a Story Get Published on this Blog?

Mrs. Yollis' Class shared their award-winning blog at a School Board meeting.

We used the following post at the School Board presentation.
It shows the steps we take to get a story published.

* * * * *
Step 1: Students organize the main ideas and details for a blog post.

Step 2: Students type their blog posts on their wireless AlphaSmart computers.

Step 3: Students get their stories checked by a student Fact Checker.

Step 4: Bloggers upload their stories to Mrs. Yollis' computer.

Step 5: Students add images and hyperlinks to enhance their posts.

Step 6: Students PUBLISH!
