Welcome Back :: 2021 - 2022

 Welcome back to a new school year! 





Wednesday was our first day of school!

Like my former dog Buck near a body of water, we jumped right in and started our third-grade adventure!

When we got to the classroom, Mrs. Yollis introduced herself. She has been teaching for one score and one decade and five years. How many years has Mrs. Yollis been teaching?

    Amelia: Mrs. Yollis is the best teacher. I am very grateful to be in your class because everyone is so nice.

    Ayda: I love your laser pointer! It helps me follow along.

    Ryan: I like this class because we do outside learning sometimes. Mrs. Yollis calls it al fresco learning.

    Macayleigh: I love this class because we do lots of learning. For example, we have learned to blog.

    Jasmine: My favorite part of the class is the microphone. I like it because I've always wanted one.

  8. Dear Mrs. Yollis and Class,

    I'm so excited for you as you start this 2021-22 school year! My name is Mrs. Ranney, and I've known and worked with Mrs. Yollis for many years. In fact, I remember her first day back in 1987! I have been retired since 2014 and still enjoy staying connected through the classroom blog and the 365 Project as well. You might find some photos I have posted there, and I'll be sure submit some more during this school year.

    During this past summer, I've enjoyed camping, hiking, gardening and visiting with my grandchildren. A special camping trip I took this summer with my husband was to Arches and Bryce Canyon National Parks. The colorful formations we viewed in each park were stunning to behold! My daughter and her family live near Joshua Tree National Park, so while visiting them we were able to hike there as well.

    What trips or activities did you enjoy this past summer? Have you visited any National Parks?

      We were shocked to learn that you were at our school in 1987.

      You asked if anyone has been to a national park. We have!

      Noah: I went to Arches National Park too. We took a big hike and we ate at a restaurant. Then we went back.

      Ava: I went to Bryce and the Grand Canyon. One the way back we went on a boat in Lake Powell. We swam in the deep water.

      Daniel: I went to the Grand Canyon. Did you go to the ghost town near by?

      Eli: I went to a national park in New York. I will ask my mom about the location.

      Tyler: I go to Leo Carillo state beach. Have you been there?

      Jacob: I went to Yellowstone National Park. There were bubbling water features that could kill you! We also saw a lot of bears.

      Marcus: I went to Yosemite National Park. We hiked up a river and it was fun.

      I was so excited to receive your reply to my comment! I love to keep the conversation going.

      Not only was I teaching at your school with Mrs. Yollis back in 1987, I was there in 1984. I also taught at two other schools between 1973 and 1984!

      How great that so many of you visited National and State Parks this past summer.

      @Noah, I love that you and I have visiting Arches in common. Mr. Ranney and I thought being there was like being in another world. Which hike did you go on? I enjoyed many hikes while we were there, including hikes to Delicate and Landscape Arches. We also ate at a restaurant in the nearby town of Moab.

      @Ava, aren’t Bryce and the Grand Canyon beauitiful? I have visited them in both summer and winter. Seeing the snow covering the colorful rocks is a sight I’ll never forget! I’ve never been to Lake Powell. Boating and swimming there must have been so much fun!

      @Daniel, I love the Grand Canyon. I’ve actually visited there in 3 out of the 4 seasons. One of my visits there even included spending time with Mr. and Mrs. Yollis! I have not been to a nearby ghost town, though. I’d love to hear more about that.

      @Eli, I am so interested to learn about which park you visited in New York. Please tell me more about it! One of my daughters lives in NYC, so I love to visit there now and then.

      @Tyler, yes, I have been to Leo Carillo State Beach. In fact, I have camped there. Did you camp? What did you enjoy doing there? I love spending time at the beach. It’s one my favorite things about living in California.

      @Jacob, Yellowstone is spectacular, isn’t? I haven’t been there in many years and would love to go again. I definitely remember those bubbling hot water features and lots of wildlife. My favorite animal sighting was of a moose. What were the bears that you saw doing?

      @Marcus, it has also been many years since I’ve visited Yosemite, another beautiful National Park. What river did you hike up? Was the water deep? The hike I remember going on the last time I was there was to the top of Vernal Falls, called Mist Trail.

      Well, everyone, I look forward to getting to know of all you better and seeing the exciting class activities posted on the blog.

      Yes, I do often miss teaching, especially because I miss working with Mrs. Yollis! Retirement does provide time for me to pursue many other interests like visiting National Parks and spending time with my granddaughters! I will be going to three more National Parks in the next few months: Kings Canyon National Park, Channel Islands National Park, and another visit to Joshua Tree.

      We hope you feel better soon. We hope that it is just a cold and not covid.

      All of us miss you!

      In class, we have been doing al fresco learning. For writing, we wrote a letter to Mrs. Yollis telling her about ourselves and our family. Some people wrote about what they want to be.

      In math, we learned about odds and evens. Here are the even numbers: 0, 2, 4, 6, 8, 10, 12, 14, 16, 18, 20. There are more. Here are the odd numbers: 1, 3, 5, 7, 9, 11, 13, 15, 17, 19, 21. There are more.

      Here is a couple of questions for you:

      If you add an even number and an even number, do you get an odd or an even sum?

      What a terrific comment!

      You mentioned you went to sleep-away camp over the summer. What made it great? I love to get some details.

      Maui is one of my favorite places to vacation. First of all, I love to snorkel and see all the beautiful tropical fish. One of my favorite fish to see is the state fish, the humuhumunukunukuapua’a. I is so colorful.

      Another reason I love Maui is because of the sunsets. Mr. Yollis and I like to go out to the beach and watch it set each night.

      What did you enjoy while you were vacationing in Maui, Hawaii?

      Sleep away camp was great because my best friend Molly was there and also my friend Ella. My counselors were very nice and I went away for two weeks!

      In Maui I liked to go on water slides and I went with my family. We also were with our family friend.

    This summer I played baseball in different cities in Los Angeles. I play 3rd base. I also went to the beach with my friends. My favorite part of the beach was boogie boarding. Did you go anywhere over the summer? Did you see any family?

    I went to Maui and the Big Island this summer, and I swam in the ocean with my friends. We saw turtles and fish, including eels. I went surfing for the first time! I got shaved ice and boba tea. We fed a horse during a van tour down a deep valley with a huge waterfall, and we went through many streams.

    In August, we went to Hood River, Oregon. We saw our friends, who stayed at a big orchard. I climbed up a giant rope tied to a tree, and I got very high up. We went to see a bunch of waterfalls. It was a very long hike to see them. Also, we hiked along Hood River and played in the water. It was very cold but fantastic. We met a kitty named Kitcat, who lived next door. She was very nice and cute. She also let us pet her.

      What a terrific comment! I learned so much about you and your fantastic summer vacation.

      You mentioned that you were in Hawaii. We have that in common! Like you, I saw green sea turtle swimming gracefully and tropical fish darting here and there. What flavor shaved ice did you have? I enjoyed a fruity coconut flavored one!

      You also said that you visited Oregon. What kind of orchard was it? Apple? Walnut? How high were the waterfalls?

      Once I had tropical sunset (mango, passion fruit, and guava). Another time I had coconut and lemon-lime I think. Our friends were staying at a pear orchard! Well we hiked up many waterfalls: the first one went all the way up a high cliff, the second was kind of the same, and the third was not very small but medium. Did you see an octopus? I saw one!

    I had a great summer. I went to Boston. I saw a Red Sox vs. Yankee game. I climbed a high treetop ropes course and went to a fun place called Boda Borg where there are lots of escape rooms. We also went to Cape Cod with my grandparents and cousins who live in Boston.

    3. @Yollis - The score was 5-3 Red Sox. But I left in the 8th inning. I was rooting for the Red Sox.

      I recommend Nantucket and Martha's Vineyard. What part of Cape Cod are you going to? If you go to Falmouth I recommend going to Old Silver
      Beach.

      @Noah, Yes there was a home run at the game. And I didn't climb a tree. It was a ropes course in trees.

  21. Dear Mrs. Yollis,

    After a challenging year, I was able to have an amazing summer. I went with my family to Maui which is in Hawaii. My parents rented a car and we drove to many different places in nature. My favorite part was to drive up the Haleakala mountain and watch the beautiful sun set above the clouds.

    On a different week, we rented an RV and went to an RV park which had a pool, a water park, and a lake. Also, I went to sleep away camp for a week with my best friend Emmy. We had a lot of fun!
    Lastly, I went to many lakes with my family and our boat and I went on the tube.

    I had a blast throughout the Summer break! What did you do during Summer?

      I noticed your well-written comment and just had to respond!

      I have been to Haleakala National Park twice before and it is one of my favorite places to visit on Maui. I'm always amazed how such a place exists on the same island as the lush beaches where I love to snorkel.

      The first time I visited Haleakala, Mr. Ranney and I got up very early one morning and drove there to see the sunrise. I will never forget how spectacular that was. Both times I've traveled there, I've enjoyed hiking down Sliding Sands Trail. Were you able to do that?

      What else did you do on the island of Maui?

    This Labor Day Weekend I went to Sequoia National Park. We rented a house for four days and three nights. It had a pool. We played football, we did front flips and back flips, we collected rocks, we did technology, and we had lots of fun. On the third day I went to Sequoia National Park. And I saw the world's massive tree. It is called General Sherman tree which is the largest tree on earth by volume. I hope everyone gets an opportunity to visit sequoia.
