It was Back to School Night!
Parents came to hear about third grade!
Lots of information was shared about classroom expectations, curriculum, and resources.

The centerpiece of the classroom is the blog.  Mrs. Yollis had her good friend and blogging buddy, Mrs. Morris from Australia, Skype in and talk with the parents about the value of blogging. Meeting and learning from our new Australian friend was a highlight of the evening!

Educational blogging has so many benefits! Thank you, Mrs. Morris, for this blogging diagram.

To learn about blogging from a student perspective, watch this video Mrs. Yollis made with her third graders about why they love blogging.

She also shared a wonderful video about supervising and guiding children on the web. It is a great video that really drives the point home. Thank you, Bill Genereux, for the fabulous movie.

Parents left thoughtful notes for their child. With Dry Erase pens, you can write right on the desk! Everyone loved it!

What are you excited to learn about this year?

Parents, how is third grade different from when you were in school?

  1. Dear Mrs Yollis and class,

What an honour to be able to skype in to your back to school night!

It was so much fun to be able to see all of your parents and give them a little insight into the many benefits of blogging.

Students, you are very lucky to have such a wonderful teacher and I know you will all have a fantastic year.

Parents, I look forward to seeing you on the blog. You can make a HUGE impact on the learning of all the students in the class just by leaving a comment every now and then. And don't forget to ask your extended family members to get involved too.

I was recently reminiscing with Mrs Yollis about some grandparents and great-grandparents who made a wonderful contribution to the class blog.

    Here is Nonno's story http://yollisclassblog.blogspot.com.au/2010/11/wheres-nonno-in-our-classroom.html

Great grandmother Bubbe shares her story here http://yollisclassblog.blogspot.com.au/2014/04/meet-bubbe-92-year-old-blogger.html

Do you know anyone who might be interested in reading and commenting on your blog?

    Happy blogging!

  2. Dear Mrs. Yollis' class,

I was really impressed by Mrs. Yollis and her contributions to the teaching and blogging communities. I learned how beneficial blogging can be and can't wait to read your posts. I feel confident that this is going to be a memorable year for all of you and a highlight as you reflect on your educational experiences.

Things have changed a lot since I was in third grade at this school, 34 years ago. First, our third grade classes were on the middle level and we sat at individual desks, lined up in rows, facing our teacher most of the day. We didn't have comfortable and inviting places to move around the classroom during read to self time. I remember reading, James and The Giant Peach in third grade, but we had to write book reports back then.

I specifically remember learning multiplication and division in third grade, which I know some of you are very excited about. I also remember learning how to write in cursive which I was reminded of by your name cards showing your font practice. This also reminded me that back in the eighties, we didn't use computers, at school that is. Instead of blogging and emailing, we had pen pals and had to mail our hand written letters using the US Postal Service. I do hope you learn cursive because it's really a beautiful way to write and it is necessary when you have to show your signature. Perhaps I should brush up on my cursive too, as my signature is kind of messy these days. My third grade teacher, Ms. Lee, would be very disappointed.

As a parent, I'm thrilled that my son, Will, will get to learn so much from Mrs. Yollis, Mrs. Morris, the school's support staff, and his classmates this year. I'm looking forward to reading the blog and all of your comments. I know you are all going to have a fantastic year.

    Warmly,

    Lindsay (Will's mom)

  3. Hello!

It was such a pleasure to hear about all of the exciting things Mrs. Yollis has planned for the year. We are thrilled that Jackson has Mrs. Yollis this year and I have a feeling it will be a very fun and memorable school year! We are loving the blog and have shared it with grandparents who hopefully will be participating on the blog as well.

We look forward to learning and growing with the class in the coming year (I already love learning about HTML Coding ♥ ★ ♥ ). Wishing everyone a safe and fun Labor Day weekend!!

    All the best,

    ♥ Molly (Jackson's mom) ♥

Hi Mrs. Yollis' Class. I am so happy that Jake is in this class for third grade! The class room looks a little different from when Jake's brother Sean was in third grade a few years ago but a lot of the information that will be learned this year will be the same. My favorite part of Mrs. Yollis' class from past years was the blog. Jake's brother Sean and I blogged almost every single day. It was such a great way for him to improve his typing. It's also lots of fun to read other posts and look at the pictures on the 365 blog. I'm looking forward to reading the blog this year and watch everyone's typing and writing improve!

  5. Hi This is Jake S. again. I am looking forward to learning how to html code. I am going to try to make a heart- here it goes- &heart;. My mom was very excited to go to back to school night. She sat next to Ben's mom and Kody's dad. She wrote me a nice note on my desk using a green dry erase marker.
Today I participated in running cubs and ran 12 laps around the grass. Do you like to participate in running cubs? How many laps can you run?

    From
    Jake S.

  6. Mrs.Yollis, I was excited about your great class this year. I was interested of visiting your class, and looking at some impressive things your class has done this year. How do you like your class? What did you learn this year that you didn't last year?

    You former student, Leor

  7. Dear Mrs. Yollis and class,

This was a spectacular night for me. I got to meet Mrs. Yollis, see the class where Mimi would be spending the next nine months, and best of all: I got to meet Barnaby Bones! In fact, we became quite close! I got the feeling he was looking over my shoulder all night!

Most of all, I was excited and impressed to discover what you all would be learning during this school year. The skills you are acquiring right now are the ones you will need from now until college and beyond! So listen up and pay attention, because you have been given an opportunity that most children do not have at this age! Lucky kids!

Enjoy! I look forward to spending time with you all when there is a volunteer opportunity.

    See you soon!

    Sincerely,

    Mrs. M (Mimi's mom)
