An Array of Compound Words

Today we reviewed compound words.

First, we watched the BrainPop Jr. video.

Something new to students was the idea of different types of compound words. For this, we stopped by the teacher resources from Spelling City

There are THREE different types of compound words, closed, hyphenated, and open compound words!

Next, Mrs. Yollis got out some compound word cards. Each student was given half of a compound word. The object was to find a student with the other half. Together two students made ONE compound word.

Once all the compound words were formed, we started making an array to figure out how many compound words we had in all. An array is a multiplication word we recently learned. When you line up objects in equal rows and columns, it makes it easy to get the total, or product

The first attempt is shown below. Students thought they had eight rows of four. So, 8 x 4 = 32 compound words.

Students soon realized that we had eight rows. However, some rows had four compound words and some rows had three compound words.

We did some figuring, and realized we had 30 words.

Once we realized we had 30 words, we started building real arrays.

6 rows of 5

15 rows of  2

2 rows of 15

3 rows of 10

What arrays did we miss?

Leave a comment using at least FOUR compound words!

  1. Dear Mrs. Yollis and Class,

I love learning multiplication. It's something other than addition that you can use throughout your lifetime. I enjoy multiplication homework.

Class is so fun when we learn to type using a keyboard on a laptop

    Have fun using compound words,
    Dylan B.

    2. @ Dylan B,

I think your comment was off-the-chart! Learning compound words is fun!

I like our new book boxes. It’s like a mini built-in library!

Let me tell you something. My dad hung pretty light bulbs in our backyard one day. They have been there for about five weeks hanging around three trees.

I went to Yosemite for Thanksgiving. We saw Half Dome, a mountain.
Right next to Half Dome was another mountain, and there was some snow on the
      mountaintop.

      Have fun learning about compounds!

    3. @ Dylan B. and Class,

Thank you for your wonderful comment! My favorite compound word is campfire. You want to know why? Well I’ll tell you anyway. I've been camping with the same people ever since I was two-and-a-half years old! I love fireflies because they're so bright at night!
I love roasting marshmallows over the campfire. Have you ever gone camping? If so what camping site did you go to?

      Sincerely,
      Dylan B.

  2. @ My Once-in-a-lifetime Class,

I love this blog post about compound words! One of my favorite compound words is sunset . Watching it from the patio in my backyard makes the treetops form a beautiful silhouette! Sometimes I walk to the frontyard and watch the sky change colors from my sidewalk.

Where do you like to watch for a beautiful sunset?

    Warmly,
    Mrs. Y♥llis

    Dear Mrs. Yollis and class,
My name is Chloe, and I am one of Mrs. Yollis's former students. One of my favorite compound words is firework. Did you know that some fireworks are homemade? They're so wonderful that the blackbirds even come out to watch them. If you don't like the sound of fireworks, then you should probably go to a soundproof room.
    Do you like fireworks?
    Sincerely,
    Chloe (Elie's sister)

One of my favorite word-types to use are compound words!

My favorite compound word to use is football . I love to play and watch the sport everyday. As a wide receiver, making a touchdown catch is a
once-in-a-lifetime experience. Your team congratulates you for your point-earnings , and it feels good.

  6. @ Mrs. Yollis,

I like the new blog post you put on the blog.

My favorite compound word is backyard.
It’s my favorite because I can use the compound word sunset, swing-set, and treetops.
I also can see my sidewalk when I am on the swing-set.

When it is night I go on my swing-set and try to see the sunset.

  8. Dear Mrs. Yollis and class,

I was sitting on the sidewalk when I heard the fireworks. They made the treetops shake. Afterward, I went to drink a milkshake and ate some cupcakes, but my favorite dessert is soft serve ice cream. Did you see how I used two open form compound words in a row?

How many compound words can you put together?

    Warmly,
    Chaolin

  10. Dear Mrs. Yollis and Class,

Like Mrs. Yollis I like sunsets too!
From my viewpoint, I could see the sky glowing and turn into a pinkish color. From my backyard, I see that view from my hillside.

    Sincerely,

  11. Dear Mrs. Yollis and class,

I think learning about compound words is fun!
There are all different types of compound words.
There are open compounds, hyphenated compounds, and closed compounds.

My favorite form of compound words is the hyphenated form because you can make longer
compounds using several words. For example
    brother-in-law.

What was your favorite way to learn compound words? Brainpop, or just in class?
What is your favorite form of compound words?

    Have fun learning about compounds!

  12. Dear Mrs. Yollis and class,

Once I had a daydream that I was in a classroom full of bookworms and one-of-a-kind classmates.

We were learning about compound words and it was breathtaking to realize just how many compound words there are in our language.

The mindset of the students in the class was positive, and the students were all like-minded, meaning that they shared the same opinions. Their opinion was that compound words are fun and exciting!

    Sincerely,
    Lisa (Nolan's Mom)

At midnight in my backyard I heard coyotes howling
on the mountainside. The next morning I looked out my window and
on the mountaintop the coyotes were hunting a rabbit for food.

  14. Dear Mrs. Yollis and class,

Compound words are super fun to think of. I'm sitting here with my laptop, typing on a tabletop, wearing sunglasses! How extraordinary! Wouldn't it be fun to play a game to see who can think of the most compound words in one minute?

    Dear Mrs. Yollis and Class,

I am super impressed that you are learning both compound words AND multiplication at the same time! I think that's a fantastic way to learn. It's also pretty awesome that you can write directly on the tabletop with markers. I have never seen anyone do that before in a classroom! Are you able to use all the colors under the rainbow? Thank you for sharing your schoolwork with me. I look forward to learning more with you. This blog post was a real eye-opener!

    Until next time,
    (Auntie) Jenny

  16. I cannot believe you are working on compound words. You can mix and match word cards on your desktop. Do you work with other classmates on this? You will see compound words everywhere you look. Did you ever see one on a billboard when you were in the car?
