Decades Day!

Last Friday was a special school spirit day,
Decades Day!

This spirit day gave us a chance to talk about fads. A fad is something that is very popular for a short time, and fads can be a lot of fun! Fads often involve fashion, an activity, or some kind of toy or trinket.

The 1950s were popular!
Check out those poodle skirts, rolled up jeans, white t-shirts, and even a pink lady!

 A 1950s black leather jacket.

I see two pairs of saddle shoes...very 1950s.

How many poodles? How many poodle legs?
Hint, use mulitiplication!

The 1960s hippies were happening!

✌

Cool man! Look at those groovy threads!
I see head bands, daisies, peace beads, and braids.

Often times, there are dance fads that are associated with a decade.

We learned The Twist from Chubby Checker. This dance craze was popular in the 1960s.

We also learned a more complicated dance from the 1970s, The Hustle. For this dance, we needed to take: four steps back, four steps forward, a grapevine turn to the right, a grapevine turn to the left, ten "Travoltas", two egg beaters, two chickens, and a front, back, side, turn. Repeat. This group dance was a lot of fun!

Photo coming soon!

We had 100% participation, so we get to keep Corky, the school coyote mascot, for the week! Here are some photos of Corky and students during Fun Friday!

What was your favorite decade and why?

Tell us about your costume!

Tell us about your decade! Who was president? What was a fad?  What musical groups were popular? Movies? What fashion was popular? Popular phrases?  (Ask your parents.)

  1. Dear Mrs. Yollis,

On Decades Day I was dressed in a poodle skirt. Can you guess which decade I was from? ... If you guessed I was from the 1950's, you were correct! I also put my hair up in a high pony tail.

The first president of the United States in the 1950s was Harry S. Truman, and the second president was Dwight D. Eisenhower.

For fashion, women wore petticoats, which look extremely painful and bothersome to wear, in my opinion. Dresses were usually mid-calf length. I really like their hairstyles; these styles are prettier than 1980's hairstyles. That is also my opinion.

Which hairstyle do you like best? You can choose from the 1950s, 1960s, 1970s and the 1980s.

    Love,
    Abigail

    1. @ Abigail,

Thanks so much for a fabulous comment! So President Truman and President Eisenhower were in the White House during the 1950s. Very interesting! How many terms (four year period spans) did each president serve?

You asked which hairstyle I liked the most. I had a big perm in the 1980s, as did many girls, and looking back, I do not like the look! I think I like the ponytails of the fifties!

Are there any dances from the fifties that we could learn?

  2. Dear Mrs. Yollis,

I wanted to dress in 50's style clothing because I was inspired by the movie Grease, which my uncle Kenny produced. My uncle Kenny grew up during the 50's, so Grease was a very special musical to him.

After looking online, I learned that the 1950's was a time of peril. It was a time when World War II ended, and just when Americans thought things would get better, the country got caught in a cold war with Russia. The Cold War was one of the scariest times to live through, because each country had atomic weapons and were threatening to use them. They each wanted to be stronger than the other country.

Today, I am glad that atomic bombs are not a threat in my daily life.

    Your student,
    Aar♥n

  3. Dear Mrs. Yollis,

Last Friday I was dressed from the 1980s, I wore a cub wear t-shirt that was pulled down by my arm and you could see the craziest tank-top I had. It was bright red and not very comfortable. I was also wearing black leggings and converse shoes, too. My hair was big and that was a fad in the 80s.

Some fads in the 80s were Cabbage Patch dolls which were one the fads of the decade, boom boxes, and neon clothes. My favorite fad from the 1980s is Trivial Pursuit because it is a fun way to learn and refresh your memory on interesting facts.

Some musical groups like Duran Duran, Bon Jovi, Journey, and Guns N’ Roses were very popular in the 80s. I like Journey very much because they wrote and sang the greatest song of the 80s, “Don’t Stop Believing!” I love this song very much because it has a great beat and the lyrics are amazing.

In the 1980s, popular phrases like, psyche, and not, were often said. People today still might say those phrases, just not as often.

I think that the 80s was the best decade out of the 50s, 60s, 70s, and 90s. Do you agree with me? Do you have evidence to prove it?

    Your student,
    Maddie

  4. Dear Mrs Yollis,

I think decades day is the greatest spirit we have had this year. First of all, I enjoyed everybody’s costumes. I dressed up as someone from the 1950s. I wore white t-shirt, jeans, white socks, and white shoes. I think I looked like someone from the movie Back to the Future. Have you ever seen that movie? Secondly, it was awesome to have our whole class dressed up. Also, you taught us the Hustle. I think it’s better than dances today because it’s easier to do that dance.

In conclusion, I think the 1950s was the best decade because it was all about Rock n’ Roll and the coolest clothes. What decade did people wear the fanciest clothes? What do you think?

    Your Rockin’ Student,

    Ari

  5. Dear Mrs. Yollis and class,

Last Friday, was the best ever!

Dancing is one of my favorite activity, and for mostly all of the day we danced. In my opinion, the Hustle was better than than the twist because the Hustle had a lot of moves.

It was really fun when we down to the office to do the Hustle. I was very proud to be in the front row.

Today, I learned that in the 1960’s, people would always say “man” in their sentences. For example, they would say, “Cool shirt, man.” That was a way to be cool back then.

Which decade do you think our classmates participated in the most? I think that most of us participated in the 1950s.
How come none of us participated in the 1970’s?

That Friday, was really the funniest Friday in all my years at this school!

    Sincerely,
    Heloise

  6. Dear Mrs. Yollis and class,

First of all, I like the 1980's because I like the neon colors. Also, I like the 1960's because I like to wear braids.

I had a pink shirt that had black stripes on it. Then in my hair, I had two small braids.

In addition, Ronald Reagan was president when it was the early 1980's and the presidents in the 1960's were President Kennedy and President Johnson.

In the 1980's, one fad was women sprayed their hair to keep it up all day. A fad for the 1960's was some women had afros.

In 1960's, music groups were popular like the Beatles, the Beach Boys, the Rolling Stones, and the Archies. In the 1980's, the Bangles were popular, the Talking Heads were popular, and the Jets.

Movies that were popular in the 80s were The Empire Strikes Back, Back To the Future, and Return of the Jedi.

Do you like the Beatles or any of the other bands?

    Love,
    Keya

  7. Dear Mrs Yollis and class,
We (Otters Class) are from the UK and we really enjoyed looking at your photos from decades day! We also really enjoyed reading the comments, there were lots of interesting facts to read!
We decided that our favourite decade was the noughties because of the advances in technology (although Miss L's favourite was the '90's because that was the decade she grew up in!)
Thanks for posting, it was great to read! If you would like to read any of our posts, our blog is http://ottersclassgps.primaryblogger.co.uk/
