The Wonderful World of Weaving!

Nic's mom and grandmother came in to class to teach our monthly art lesson. This dynamic duo taught the class how to weave!

First, we made a paper loom and then the weaving began.
Over. Under. Over. Under.

Over. Under...

What have you woven?

What was the most difficult part?

    Dear Mrs. Yollis,

What a great project that the class got to participate in. Not one of the projects looks the same, which makes each one unique. That was so nice of Nic's mom and grandmother to come and teach this skill to the class.

The last time that I weaved something was a placement and like the class, I made it out of construction paper. We then laminated it so it would stay clean and use it every thanksgiving.

The hardest part about weaving for me is to remember whether to weave under or over. I guess if you try to weave under two times, it will not come out correct.

What other things have you woven?

    Sincerely,
    Meredith

  2. Dear Mrs. Yollis and class,

I think it was a great idea to do the weaving project in class. The easy part for me was the cutting of the paper, while the hard part was the over and under step. It would be fun to do another weaving project where we made placements for a holiday gift for our family. I can't wait to bring mine home to show my family!

    Sincerely,
    Sydney

  3. Dear Mrs. Yollis and class:

The colorful placements that the students wove for their art project makes such a creative display for your classroom!

When I was a kid, my parents bought me a small loom. I would make small pot holders to give as gifts during the holidays to family and friends. During that time, some of my friends would make scarves which I found to be very challenging to make myself.

You mentioned that this was a monthly art project. This seems like it would be an enjoyable one for the class. What other art projects have the students been able to enjoy?

    Sincerely,
    Karen (Nic's Aunt)

    Dear Mrs. Yollis and Class,

It was such a pleasure helping everyone with the weaving project. Weaving is very challenging, but everyone seemed to enjoy what they were doing. Best of all, all of you were able to complete your weaving and make them a part of a beautiful bulletin board. I know your parents will love them when you bring them home.

Thank you for inviting me and welcoming me into your classroom. All of you were very gracious and polite, and I felt like it was a happy environment. I hope to visit again.

    Warmly,
    Bonnie (Nic's grandma)

  6. Dear Mrs. Yollis,

I love how we made the weaving into a frame, and we put a picture in it. I loved that we could glue pieces of newspaper on the strips of paper, and I also enjoyed how the strips of paper could be glued onto the newspaper.

    Do you like to weave?

    Have you woven with paper?

    Sincerely,
    Sam and Nicholas

  7. Dear Mrs.Yollis and Class,

It was a a great idea to do the weaving project. I liked going over and under, and I liked the color pattern that I used with the colors purple, black, and blue. I hope we can do this project again.

    Sincerely,
    Sydney and Noa

      Dear Sydney and Noa,

How did you pick the colors that you used? Were you allowed to choose any ones you wanted? They all seem to be so different!

If you were to make another weaving project, what do you think you would make? Maybe a place mat? Anything else you can think of you could weave?

      Sincerely,
      Meredith

  8. Dear Mrs. Yollis,

We loved the weaving project, although it was a bit hard to weave for the first time. I loved weaving because it was extremely fun, and it looks colorful when you're done.

    Sincerely,
    Aiden and Josh

  9. Dear Mrs. Yollis and class,

We think that the weaving project was fun, although Kate, my friend, was not there that day. I helped her on Fun Friday, so she was able to finish her weaving.

    Sincerely,
    Kate and Aryana

  10. Dear Mrs. Yollis and class,

What a fun and colorful project! I like how each person can personalize his/her frame to create a different twist on their design, and then add his/her own photo to it.

The last thing I "weaved" was a rooster that was made with a potholder loom that used jersey fabric strips. The material was interweaved using a rug hook to loop it together. Then you added red yarn for the comb (aka crown).

I look forward to seeing more fun projects.

    Sincerely,
    Judy (Ruby's mom)

  11. Dear Mrs. Yollis and class,

This looks like such a creative and fun project. What a great idea! Noa told me several times how she enjoyed the weaving. I think I am going to ask Noa to teach me how to weave.

    Sincerely,

    Noa's Dad

  12. Dear Mrs. Yollis and class,

I do have to say that Nic's mom and grandmother did a fantastic job teaching us how to weave.

I have actually only woven once and that was with Nic's grandmother and mom.

The hardest part about weaving is is to remember to switch every time by going over, under, over, under, and if you don't alternate then it won't be woven correctly.

    Sincerely,
    Sean

  13. Dear Mrs. Yollis and class,

I love to weave, and it was so exiting!
The part that I liked the most was when we put the scrap over and under, and I also like how it is shaped like a wave.
Have you ever weaved before? I hope we get to weave again!

    Sincerely,
    Liron

  14. Dear Mrs.Yollis,
I loved the weaving project because it was so fun. I am making place mats for Thanksgiving, and I need three more to go.The colors for the project I used were: yellow for the loom, green with a little bit of blue clouds, straight up green, and a turquoise kind of color. You can tell because there is a picture of it at the bottom of the post. I thank Nic's mom and grandma for this great project. What colors would you use? Would you make place mats for Thanksgiving?

    Thankfully,
    Aryana

    Hello, Mrs. Yollis and class,

That weaving project looks like it was a lot of fun. I especially enjoyed seeing the pictures of the activities on the blog with comments on each picture going step by step in the process.

Great idea to make placemats for thanksgiving with your new skills, too. I would like to know the size of each placemat you are making and how you began by measuring.

How many students are making thanksgiving placements?

    Sincerely,

    Stasia

    1. Hi Aunt Stasia,
I am so glad you commented. I will answer the questions you asked. First, I did not measure the paper at all. I just went to Target and got a colorful pad of paper. Second, I bent the paper and I cut strips of it. I didn't cut it all the way and I cut it with the fold down. Third, I took a piece of paper that matched the other piece of paper and cut out strands of the paper. I ran out of strands one time, so I cut out a couple of more strands. Last, I did under over.

So far I think I am the only one doing place mats.

      Sincerely,
      Aryana
