Last week, Mrs. Yollis' third graders read The Lost and Found, a story
in our anthology by Mark Teague.
The story is about three friends who get lost in the Lost and Found bin! Their lucky hats brings them good luck at the end of the story.
* * * * *
For fun, we wore our lucky hats today! Second grade's reading unit is called Silly Stories, so they wore a silly hat!
In class, we had a fun time looking at our silhouettes! A silhouette is a shadow. Can you find your hat? (Click on the photo to enlarge.)
Here are some fun photos from Lucky Hat day!

WOW! The class was so creative. Great job with the hat making. I hope everyone had a wonderful Friday. Thank you Ms. Yollis and her 2/3 class. :)
ReplyDeleteDear Mrs. Yollis,
ReplyDeleteMy hat is special because I got it at Ford's theater (where Aberham Lincon got shot) My favorite part of the day was when Grace's Bullfrog leaped on my leg. It was grows and exiting.
Sincerly,
Collin
Dear Collin,
DeleteThat is so cool. Did you get to sit in the booth where Lincoln was shot? Did you get to see the gun that John Wilkes Booth shot Lincoln with? I got to see it when I went to Washington, D.C. over the summer. I was very bored until my family and I went into the large theater.
From,
Ryan
Dear Ryan,
DeleteWhen I went to Ford's Theater, I saw a play. After the play I got to see where Aberham Lincoln sat. After that, we got a tour of the theater. We also saw the gun holes from John Wilkes Booth's gun. Did you know that when he shot him it was with a quiet gun and, he shot it at a very funny part in the play? There were also 3 other people on John Wilks Booth team. They were all trying to kill people but all of them failed.
Sincerly,
Collin
Dear Collin,
DeleteI think that it was really funny when Goober jumped on you. Can you believe how far he can jump?
What do you think was the funniest part of the day?
Sincerely,
Gr♥ce
Dear Mrs. Yollis' class,
DeleteIt sure was nice to meet you all and I loved your hats. I heard you had a blast with Goober and from what I could tell from Goober later, he was tired - he dug himself a new hole in a hard to reach area within his terrarium.
Do you want us to bring him again for another visit when he gets bigger?
Sincerely,
Tim
Dear Mrs. Yollis and class,
ReplyDeleteIt sure looks like you all had a terrific day wearing your hats. I am impressed with the creativity and originality demonstrated by the class.
What was the inspiration for the hat each of you wore?
Sincerely,
Shannon- Collin's mom
Dear Mrs. Y♥llis,
ReplyDeleteThe shadows were so cool! I saw my shadow. Did you see your shadow?
In that video, I also saw my the picture of me it was really funny!
Today I am going to make a silly/lucky hat for my dog.
Are you going to make a silly/lucky hat for your dog? It will look cute even though my dog does not like it.
Sincerely,
Heather
Dear Mrs.Yollis,
ReplyDeleteMy favorite part of the day was when I met Goopter. Thank you Grace, for bringing Goopter into class.
My hat is long and red and white. I bought my hat at a cat in the hat store in Florida.
Sincerely,
Katelyn
Dear Katie,
DeleteI'm glad you had fun with Goober (it is spelled Goober). I think playing with Goober on the rug was the hit of the day.
What do you think was the hit of the day?
Sincerely,
Gr♥ce
Dear Mrs Yollis and class,
ReplyDeleteWhat a super hat day you all had. You sure did make and come to school with some amazing hats. The last time I made or even wore a hat was my first year at school. We had an Easter Bonnet hat parade.
We mainly made hats along the line of celebrating Easter in a form of a hat.
As children we all loved wearing our Easter hat.
Mrs Yollis once again lovely to see you wearing your wonderful hat as well.
Cheers AA. :)
@ AA,
DeleteThanks so much for your lucky hat comment! I do so love my flowered hat and it only gets out once a year! :-)
Hats are so much fun! I have a straw hat with a big brim that I wear during the summer a lot. It has a chin strap so it is great for hiking!
Your pal,
Mrs. Y♥llis
Hi Mrs. Yollis:
ReplyDeleteMy dad and I are checking out your Lucky Hat Day post. My favorite hat was the cheese hat that Abbey was wearing. The cheese hat is a symbol of the Green Bay Packers - my favorite NFL team. Do you have a favorite team?
Peter G
@ Peter,
DeleteThanks for a terrific comment! I love how you capitalized all the proper nouns in your writing! Good for you, Peter!
You asked if I had a favorite NFL team. Sadly, I do not. However, I do love cheddar cheese and so I loved Abbey's hat!
One of the hats I adored at Lucky Hat Day was Heather's hat. I like how she was inspired by Royce's hat from last year and made hers interactive!
Tell us about your silly hat. :-)
Your proud teacher,
Mrs. Y♥llis
Mrs.Yollis:
ReplyDeleteMy hat came from the Living Desert Zoo in Palm Springs. I decorated the hat using a cut up cardboard tube, some tin foil and Mario Bros. duct tape.
How did you decorate your hat?
Sincerely,
Peter
Dear Mrs. Yollis and class,
ReplyDeleteEveryone had a magnificent hat! They were all pretty good. I saw a hat that I really connected with. It was Bryce's hat. I loved the little animals on it. I thought it was really creative. One of the reasons I liked this hat is because I love animals.
Peter, you asked how did we decorate our hats. That's a great question and I shall answer. I used colorful and patterned duct tape to stick silly and happy party noise makers and fun bracelets to a happy shimmery hat. I got the idea from the 2nd and 3rd grade themes of silly and happy.
My favorite part of the day was taking our silhouettes. I saw my shadow in the pictures.
Can anyone else share how they got their idea for their hat?
See you tomorrow,
Chloe
Hello Mrs. Yollis and class,
ReplyDeleteI think your hats are all amazing.
Particularly in summertime, I wear one of my Akubra hats to keep the sun off my face. Akubras are Australian made felt hats. Many styles have wide rims for extra shade.
When I was in Paris and London in 2010, I had many stares from people as I walked around with my Akubra on. In Paris, a museum worker asked if I was from Texas. I suppose I looked like a cowboy. :)
In my final school, we had a rule of “No hat, no play” in warmer months to protect us from too much sun. When on playground duty, I would wear a large Mexican sombrero big enough to shade most of me. Seeing me walking towards them under my big hat, students would realise they had forgotten their hat and run to get it. :)
Your silhouettes are very interesting. I could see the hats, or at least I hope they were hats. If not, some of you had very strange heads. :)

@ Mr. Mannell,
DeleteThank you for your great comment! We always enjoy your humor!
We have some questions about your Akubra hat. What color is your Akubra hat.We think it is brown. When and where did you buy it.
From your blogging buddies from America,Mrs. Yollis class
Dear Mrs Y♥llis
ReplyDeleteMy hat was lucky because it stands for Wisconsin. Why is your hat lucky? My two favorite parts of of the day were watching Grace's bull frog Goober and seeing all the work people put in there hats.
Sincerly,
Abbey

ReplyDeleteThere are cool hats mrs.yollis are thay youre students?
ReplyDeleteDear Mrs Yollis and class,
ReplyDeleteI love the idea of a 'lucky hat' day! What a very creative bunch, and what a super set of hats! Unfortunately the hats we are wearing at present are RAIN hats! I look at your lovely pictures of sunshine and *sigh* as it continues to rain here in the north of England after the wettest summer for ONE HUNDRED YEARS!
It doesn't look like you guys need waterproof hats...

Dear Mrs. Yollis,
ReplyDeleteWow! So many creative hats! I remember having lucky hat day last year too. I can't believe you have such wonderful students that all participate. Last year, we had some very crazy hats too. I believe it was Matthew or Rexon who had a part-hat part-game. Your new students must of had so much fun creating two hats for the best hat party ever!
Sincerely,

P.s.: Should I come during lunch? Logan and Alexandra want to come too.
