Learn to Write a Compound Sentences

Mrs. Yollis' students are always trying to improve their writing skills.

*       *       *       *       *
 A compound sentence:
  1. Combines two shorter sentences (so has TWO subjects)
  2. Joins the two sentences with  a conjunction (and, or, but, so)
  3. The comma goes BEFORE the conjunction.
*       *       *       *       *
Here are some sample compound sentences, and they are all about Thanksgiving!
(Hey, that's a compound sentence!)
Thanksgiving is celebrated on the fourth Thursday in November, and many families gather for a traditional feast.
In 1620, the Pilgrims landed in Plymouth, Massachusetts, but they had really planned a trip to Virginia.
The Massachusetts winter was extremely cold and  harsh, so everyone had to work together to survive.
The Wampanoag Indians helped the struggling Pilgrims, so they were able to harvest crops for their first feast.
Modern Americans dine on turkey and stuffing at home, or they make a reservation at a local restaurant.

In the comment section tell about your plans for Thanksgiving. Be sure to include at least two COMPOUND SENTENCES.

  1. Dear Mrs. Yollis,

Great post! I love your big turkey at the top, and your jumping turkey at the bottom is cute too! Every year my family goes to Sand Diego to visit my grandparents. We always have turkey, and we have pie for dessert! I love my grandma's stuffing, and her turkey is divine! We always end the night with some laughs, and we enjoy singing songs! That is my families Thanksgiving vacation!

  2. Dear Mrs. Yollis,

I love your post! It is a really good idea to have a post about compound sentences because you get to learn about it.

Here is a example of compound sentence:

Thanksgiving is in November, and families eat lots of turkey.

    Ellie and Leila

  3. Aloha Mrs. Yollis and 3rd graders,
Thanksgiving was celebrated by the Pilgrims but Abraham Lincoln officially declared it a holiday. It is my favorite holiday and my favorite time of year. I do like turkey for dinner but I have to say watching football is also something I like too. The leftovers from the feast make great dinners over the weekend so we can all go shopping!
    A hui hou my friends,
    Mrs. Jacobs

  4. Der Mrs. Yollis

I really liked the turkey jumping into the leaves. We are going to have a thanksgiving dinner at our house, and we are inviting many guests to come over. We are even having our cousins from San Francisco come to visit. We see them every Thanksgiving. My dad makes the turkey, and my mom makes the stuffing and cranberry sauce. My grandma usually brings potato salad and piroshki, and my aunt usually brings desserts like pumpkin pie and fruits. It is a very delicious dinner! What do you do on Thanksgiving?

  5. Dear Mrs. Yollis,

I like your post, and I really love the cute turkeys!

For Thanksgiving this year my family and I are invited to two places, and since they are at different times, my mom would like us to attend both. Early in the afternoon, we are going to celebrate with our friends, and later in the evening, we will go to our relative's house to celebrate with family.

Thanksgiving is one of my favorite holidays because of the wonderful food, but also because I get to spend time with family and friends. I love to eat turkey and mashed potatoes, but my favorite is of course pumpkin pie!

What is your favorite thing to eat at Thanksgiving, and where do you like to eat it?

  6. Dear Mrs. Yollis,
I love when I go Thanksgiving and I get to eat a lot of pie. We are going to Las Vegas for Thanksgiving to see my grandparents and cousins. What are you doing for Thanksgiving?

    Your friend,

  7. Dear Mrs Yollis and class,

I, am with Sasha I too love your turkey appearing at the top and bottom of this post.

We don't have Thanksgiving day here in Australia but I think it would be another wonderful opportunity to have a celebration down under.

I really enjoyed reading why you celebrate Thanksgiving.

Thankyou and Happy Thanksgiving day everyone.

    From your blogging and friend,
    AA. :)

  8. Dear Mrs Yollis and Grade 3
We don't celebrate Thanksgiving in New Zealand however I have heard a lot about how the holiday is celebrated in America.
We often enjoy turkey at Christmas and the leftovers are delicious with a salad the next day.
I hope you all enjoy your Thanksgiving this year.

    from Mrs McKenzie

  9. Dear Mrs. Yollis and class,

I love the turkey, and it is cute.

I am going to visit friends in Philadelphia with my parents, and we will be celebrating thanksgiving with them.

The next day after Thanksgiving, my family and I are going to drive to New York, and I am looking forward to seeing the Statue Of Liberty.

My mom told me that it's going to be cold there, so my mom is buying me warm clothes for the winter.

I hope that I enjoy being there with my friends.

    Your student,

  10. Dear Mrs. Yollis,

I love when I go to Thanksgiving dinner at my grandma's house, and I get to eat a lot of scrumptious pie. We are going to Las Vegas for Thanksgiving to see my grandparents and cousins. What are you doing for Thanksgiving?

    Your friend,

  11. Dear Mrs. Yollis,

I love the big turkey at the top of the post! This year my family is going on an airplane to Las Vegas for Thanksgiving. We are staying in the MGM Hotel for one night, and we are seeing a show at Treasure Island Hotel called Mystere. The next day we will go to my grandparents house, and we will prepare for Thanksgiving. Almost all of my aunts, uncles and cousins will be there. My mom told me that we will have 47 people at Thanksgiving dinner. Almost everyone is bringing a pie. My favorite pie is banana cream pie. What is your favorite kind of pie?

    Your friend,

  12. Dear Mrs. Yollis,

That is the cutest turkey I have ever seen!
I think it is rolling its eyes because it doesn't want to be eaten for Thanksgiving.

This Thanksgiving, I am going to my grandma's house to have a family dinner with my uncle, mom, dad, and brother. My mom makes the turkey and my grandma makes the stuffing. It takes my mom at least 4 hours to dress, and bake. Sometimes the turkey is so big, we invite my moms friends!

    I enjoy Thanksgiving a lot.

  13. Dear Mrs. Yollis,

I agree with Sarah! On Thanksgiving I go to my aunt's house, and all of my family is there! My favorite things to eat on Thanksgiving are mashed potatos, stuffing, turkey, and pumpkin pie! I always chase my older cousins, and they always pick me up and make me laugh!

    ♥ Alyssa ♥

  14. Dear Mrs.Yollis,

I agree with Sasha that the turkey is cute. I love Thanksgiving, and I have turkey every year. My mom makes mushroom stuffing, and my dad makes candied yams. Some years my Dad has to work on Thanksgiving, so we go to the fire station for dinner. I eat pumpkin pie, candied yams, mashed potatoes and gravy, stuffing, green beans, cranberries, salad, bread, and of course, turkey. What kinds of food do you have on Thanksgiving? What type of Thanksgiving dish is your favorite? Have you ever been to a turkey farm? Do you ever feel bad for the turkeys? My Dad says that the turkeys that get picked to be Thanksgiving turkeys know that they are very special.

  15. Dear Mrs. Yollis and class,
For the Thanksgiving Holiday this year, we are going to Grandmas's sister's home to celebrate and we are bringing all the after dinner desserts. We all enjoy ourselves sharing the bountiful Thanksgiving feast and giving thanks for all that we have, but the men find time to notice the football scores on the television that is playing in the background. Our full Thanksgiving dinner is served in late afternoon so we spend the hours prior to dinner sampling all the different appetizers.

Royce, what is your favorite food to eat on Thanksgiving?

Will you be watching the Macy's Thanksgiving Day Parade on T.V.?

    Royce's Grandma and Grandpa

  16. Parsa [Mrs. Yollis' class]November 15, 2011 at 5:40 PM

    Dear Mrs. Yollis,

Thank you for teaching every thing about compound sentences. Since it is all most Thanksgiving I will talk about what I am going to do on Thanksgiving break.

I am going to my cousin’s house, and he has a little brother that is 1 year old. When it is dinner time some of my family eat turkey, and the others like the stuffing better [ I usually eat turkey]. About 10 minutes later we all eat desert [desert is usually pumpkin pie] [mmm...mmm...mmm], but some of my relatives, family, and friends do not like pie. Sadly when it is night we all have to go home, but I still have a fantastic time on Thanksgiving like all of the other Thanksgiving parties I have been to.

What is your favorite food on Thanksgiving dinner?

    Parsa [Mrs. Yollis' class]

  17. Dear Mrs. Yollis and class,

For Thanksgiving I am having a big feast, and my cousins are coming over. The house is decorated with lots of pumpkins, and it looks really great. The grown-ups cook dinner together, and us kids play video games while we wait. Before we eat dinner we all say what we are thankful for, and I am thankful for my family.

My favorite food is pumpkin pie, and my least favorite food is gravy. I really like mashed potatoes, and I pile them high on my plate. My mom makes pumpkin bread, and it is shaped like tiny pumpkins. When it is time for dessert I always have room, and my mom is making lots of treats.

After we eat we like to watch a movie, and I hope we watch Lord of the Rings this year. It is my favorite movie, and I love the part when the Black Rider rides the dragon. I really love Thanksgiving dinner, but the best part is having the whole week off of school!

    Your turkey of a friend,

  18. Dear Mrs. Yollis and class,

I am very excited about Thanksgiving this year because we are celebrating at our house. In our family, we take turns hosting it, and we haven't had a turn for a few years.

Thanksgiving is my favorite meal of the whole year. I love to cook, and really enjoy making all of the food. This year I am planning on baking a lot of yummy desserts from scratch. I am making pumpkin chiffon pie, apple pie, cranberry-apple tart, and carrot cake.

I also enjoy decorating and have decorated the house with lots of garland and glass pumpkins. We even have a small pumpkin patch and scarecrows in our courtyard.

I am excited about spending the week with Maya and Roman and hope that we can do some of the baking together. Hope you all have a wonderful Thanksgiving!

    Your friend,
    Lori (Maya's mom)

  19. Dear Mrs. Yollis and class,

I am very excited about Thanksgiving this year. There are lots of people coming over for dinner and I am hoping that they are really messy. I love when people accidentely drop food on the ground! I will hide under the table and quietly wait.

I am really thankful for Maya, and love when she plays tug-of-war with me. I am also thankful for my friend Captain, and hope he comes to play soon!

    Your furry friend,
    Jasper (Maya's dog)

  20. Dear Mrs. Yollis and class,

On Thanksgiving Day I will have a big plate of turkey and mashed potatoes. My favorite part of Thanksgiving is playing outside with whoever I want to. For dessert I will eat pumpkin pie on a little plate with whipped cream. And what else I want to say is I want to eat ice cream on Thanksgiving Day. That's all I want to say.

    Your friend,
    Roman (Maya's little brother)

  21. Dear Mrs. Yollis,

Love your post! This year my family, and I are going to my grandmother's new home for Thanksgiving dinner and this will be our first time celebrating the holiday at her new place. I can't wait to enjoy having pumkin pie, for it's my favorite part of the holiday.

What is your favorite part of Thanksgiving?

  22. Dear Mrs. Yollis,

Thanksgiving dinner at my house is really amazing, and the food is always yummy. My whole family comes over, and we all eat together. My mom cooks the turkey, and my Aunt and Grandmas bring the other food.

    Happy Thanksgiving,

  23. Hello Mrs. Yollis,
This is a great way to improve your classes handwriting skills!
Today Barack Obama is coming to Australia (Canberra) it's very cool, I think he's a great man.

Can you beleive his car (The beast) cost 1.4 million dollars!
    Wow :)

  24. Dear Mrs. Yollis,

I really like your marvelous post, and the thing that I liked most about it was the two turkeys at the top and the bottom of the post.

My favorite compound sentence was "Thanksgiving is celebrated on the fourth Thursday in November, and many families gather for a traditional feast.", and I can make a connection with that sentence.

I gather around with lots of people for a Thanksgiving party, but they are not my family members. They are my friends and their family members, but they are all nice and friendly.

First, the kids start making a Thanksgiving centerpiece, and it always comes out amazing.

Then, the grown-ups call us down for dinner, and we usually say, "just a minute." We switch between eating and doing the craft, and the craft is usually done just before dessert.

We bring down the craft, and the parents and family members all say it is fantastic!

Who do you celebrate Thanksgiving with?

    Dear Mrs. Yollis,

Thankyou for teaching us about compound sentences, and we really liked the lesson.
We celebrate Thanksgiving with our friends and relatives, and we always have so much fun! Our favorite foods on Thanksgiving are stuffing, turkey, and mashed potatoes, and we always have those foods on the Thanksgiving dinner table.

Royce's favorite part of Thanksgiving is having desert, and Sarah's favorite part of Thanksgiving is playing with her family members.

  29. Dear Mrs. Yollis,

I love your post! This year my family, and I are going to my grandmother's new home for Thanksgiving dinner, and this will be our first time celebrating the holiday at her new place. I can't wait to enjoy having pumkin pie, for it's my favorite part of the holiday.

What is your favorite part of Thanksgiving?

  30. Dear Mrs. Yollis.

Since your post has a turkey at the top I figured this would be a great opportunity to post fun facts about Thanksgiving, for the entire class to enjoy.

    # In the US about 280 million turkeys are sold, for the Thanksgiving celebrations.

    # Each year the average American eats somewhere between 16 - 18 pounds of turkey.

    # Californians, are the largest consumers of turkey in the United States.

    # Thanksgiving Day is celebrated on the fourth Thursday of November in the United States.

    # Although Thanksgiving is widely considered an American holiday, yet it is also celebrated on the second Monday of October in Canada.

    # Black Friday is the Friday after Thanksgiving in the United States, and it is also the beginning of the traditional Christmas shopping season.

Does anyone else have more fun facts about Thanksgiving?

    Jakob's mom

  31. @ Mrs Yollis,

I am really looking foward to Thanksgiving dinner because my Mom and Dad always make the turkey so yummy, and they always let me help cook! My favorite thing about Thanksgiving Dinner is eating with my family, and playing with my friends. We have to be careful with my dog becuase she always tries to eat my food. My favorite dessert is pumkin pie with whip cream, and flan which is a type of custurd, yum!

    Happy Thanksgiving, Alexandra

  32. Dear Mrs. Yollis,

This Thanksgiving holiday my family is planning to stay in our suburb. We are planning a trip to the KidSpace Museum, and a trip the Gene Autry Museum of Western Heritage as well.

We plan to spend Thanksgiving with friends. My mom and I will be making pumpkin pie, mashed potatoes, corn bread and a sweet potato casserole, but we are not making the turkey or the stuffing.

Also, I really want to see the movie Jack and Jill with my brother, but my dad says the movie is not very good and so he doesn't want to take us.

  33. Dear Mrs. Yollis,

I love your two turkeys, and your example of compound sentences. The turkey at the top looks like he is saying, "Happy Thanksgiving!", and the turkey at the bottom is saying "Weeeee!"

Our plans for Thanksgiving begin in the morning, and go throughout the day. First, we watch the Macy's Parade, and my mom is usually cooking. This year my dad is making brussel sprouts, and my mom is baking cookies. Then we get dressed, and head over to my Aunt's house to celebrate with the rest of our family. There we talk, play games, play with the dog, laugh, and reminisce of holidays gone by. We end the day with a turkey dinner, and of course, a pumpkin pie!

The next day, my parents, Aunt, Grandma and I are going to New York City. On the plane I will read, play video games, watch a movie, and sleep. We will visit a friend in Connecticut, and see the sights of Manhattan. I'm looking forward to going inside the Statue of Liberty, and seeing the view from the crown. I'm also looking forward to shopping FAO Schwarz, Toys R' Us, and ice skating in Central Park. We always visit Dylan's Candy Bar, and get a frozen hot chocolate at Serendipity. And I can't wait to get those hot nuts on the street!

    Are you going on vacation?

What are you doing for Thanksgiving?

  34. Dear Mrs. Yollis,

The moving images were really cool. I remember last year when you also taught us how to write compound sentence. I now use compound sentences in many articles I write. Sometimes Mrs Krauss gives us a limit of how many sentences we should write for an assignment. I usually have too many sentences and in order to shorten the number of sentences, I create compound sentences.

For Thanksgiving, my family is going to invite friends and family members. Many family members bring something special. For dessert my great aunt brings the pumpkin pie and my aunt brings chocolate chip cookies. My dad is the main chef in the family, and he cooks the turkey. My mom and I, usually make the cranberry sauce, and when she isn't looking, I quickly get a lick of the sauce. After dinner, everyone is usually very full.

    Your former student,

  35. @ Mrs Yollis,

I am Alexandra's dog, Daisy, and I want to tell you that I am very excited about Thanksgiving Dinner. Oh, I just can't wait to eat all of those leftovers! I absolutely love eating the turkey. It is true that I do try to jump on the dinner table to eat Alexandra's food, and I hope I get to eat dessert this year.

    Your furry friend,
    Alexandra's dog Daisy

  36. Dear Mrs. Yollis' class,

Wow! Many of you have included several compound sentences in your comments, so your posts have been interesting and amusing.

Our family has two options for Thanksgiving. We can fly to New York and New Jersey, or we can stay local and celebrate with friends. As far as the menu, I like sweet potatoes and stuffing, but not cranberry sauce. We always start out the day by watching A Charlie Brown's Thanksgiving , and drinking hot chocolate.

I hope everyone enjoys the week off, and has a wonderful time with their family and friends.

    Royce's mom

  37. Amazing post!
I love all the turkeys in it! I also love how you bolded the conjunction words apart from the other words. And I hope you guys had a great Thanksgiving! What did you guys do for Thanksgiving?

  38. Hi my names Josh. I'm in grade 7 and I'm from the Comox Valley. I really like this blog. I find it interesting that your blog has many things to comment on. I would rather have 100 cents then 1 dollar.

  39. Dear Mrs. Yollis,

I love your post! The turkey is cute , and the turkey is very funny. This post was a great idea because we are learning about compound sentences in class, and now we are learning about it in the blog.

This is an example of a compound sentence:
I ate turkey on Thanksgiving, but it didn't taste good.

This is not a compound sentence:
I ate some turkey and some chicken.

  40. Dear Mrs Yollis,

I am Alexandra's little sister and I am five years old. I am really excited about Thanksgiving dinner. My favorite food at Thanksgiving dinner is turkey, and my favorite dessert is pumpkin pie. I am really excited about my family coming to my house and celebrating Thanksgiving.

    Giselle (Alexandra's little sister)

P.S. My big sister, Alexandra, typed for me.

  41. Dear Mrs. Yollis,

This will be an awesome family vacation trip.
    Happy Thanksgiving!

  42. Dear Grandma and Grandpa,

My favorite food to eat on Thanksgiving is stuffing, and I also like the turkey.

I will be watching the Thanksgiving parade on T.V., but I will not watch the whole thing.

Will you be watching the Thanksgiving parade?

What is your favorite food to eat on Thanksgiving?

  43. @ Maya,

Wow great comment! You got eleven compound sentences in that one comment!

    Dear Mrs. Yollis,

I love reading all the comments! I like reading them because I get to hear where everyone is going on vacation! I am going to pretend to be Beverly, and Panda, and I am going to tell where they are going!

    Hello Mrs. Yollis,

Beverly and Panda here. We love your post! We are both going to Hawaii, and we are going to the big island! Doesn't that sound fun, and Exciting? Panda can't wait to go surfing, and he asked me to go with him, but I said I just want lay on the Beach, and just relax. We are staying there on Saturday, Sunday, and Monday. Then we are coming on Tuesday. We will be sad to leave, but we will come home to the people we love being with!

    Beverly and Panda

  44. Dear Mrs. Yollis and class,
Our favorite food on Thanksgiving is the dark meat of the turkey, but we also enjoy old fashioned bread stuffing and candied yams.
Watching the Macy's Thanksgiving Day Parade is a family tradition, and we always get excited when we see Santa because that means Christmas is getting closer.
Royce, we know your favorite part of Thanksgiving is having dessert, so we hope you enjoy something especially delicious.

    Grandma and Grandpa

  45. Dear Mrs.Yollis,

My mom put my turkey on the wall and right now my mom still has it on the wall! When my mom saw the turkey she laughed when the sign said ” Eat Meat Not Me”.

  46. Dear Mrs. Yollis,

This year my grandma tricked us saying she wasn't going to cook for Thanksgiving day, but at the end she did. She even had my favorite pumpkin pie, and strawberry lemonade. Thanksgiving day is fun, and you get to eat diffrent kinds of foods.
