Place Value Fun!

Mrs. Yollis' new students are reviewing numbers. 
Today they looked at the different forms a number can take.
They used their ClustrMap for practice!




The symbols 0, 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8, and 9 are digits.


Standard form: A way of writing numbers using digits


Expanded form: A way to write numbers by showing the VALUE  of each digit


Word form:  A way to write numbers using words




Tomorrow, everyone is hoping for this palindrome!
(A palindrome a word, phrase, or sequence that reads the same backward as forward, e.g., madam or nurses run.)

Several students played Digital Dog Bone at home last night!

 The class played manual Dog Bone in class. They used their hand to place a number in the correct location on the hundreds chart.



Some numbers were easy to place like:  1, 2, 5, 10, 20, 30, and 100. Others numbers were more difficult to place, especially if the hundred chart was empty!

    Dear Mrs. Yollis,

    I played Dog Bone last night and it was very fun.

    When I was playing, the timer ran out and my highest score was 9 bones. All of the numbers were hard to place. One strategy I would recommend would be to look at the top row. If you were looking for 44, go to 4 and then count down four and that will get you there quickly.

    I played last night too. Luckily I got some easy numbers. For example, I already had 48 and then I needed the number 49. It was just to the right!

    When I played I got some help from my mom. If you go to the right, the numbers are higher. If you go to the left, you are subtracting.

    My high score at Dog Bone is 9.


    One strategy I recommend is if you have 98 for example, 98 is in the high 90s, so you look at the right. If you have a low number like 42, you would subtract. That is an easy way to find the number.

    Dog Bone is useful in school because you can remember the 100 chart by heart. It is definitely my favorite game.

    What a great way to begin your first day back at school with some fun math activities.

    I enjoyed reading your blog post about place value.

    One strategie which I tend to use is that I visualize numbers in my head and take it from there. Nine times out of ten it works but every now and then I tend to loss where I am at and totaly get it all wrong. Ah! the beauty of learning.

    What a terrific comment! I really like the strategies like add to the right or subtract to the left. I also like the idea of looking for a specific column, like the four column...4, 14, 24, 34 and so forth. Good ideas!

    Wow! Getting nine bones is a great score! Yes, playing Dog Bone really helps you remember the hundred chart by heart. That's good stuff!

    Yes, it is excited to learn new words and concepts. The word "algebra" gets used a lot in our math book, but it sounds harder than it really is!

  7. Dear Mrs Yollis,
    I played Dog Bone and my highest score was ten numbers in one minute.

    My strategy was when the ones column of a number was less than five like 31, it would be in the beginning of the row and if the ones column was greater than five like 89 it would be at the end of the row. Also, for the tens column you can count the rows of the number chart to figure out where it goes.

    Dog Bone taught me how to quickly read a number chart.

    Hannah and I just played Digital Dog Bone, I got ten bones with nine seconds remaining.

    The numbers in the far right column are easiest to place because they are the tens.

    My strategy is to go the tens columns and then estimate where the ones are.
