Mrs. Yollis' students are always trying to improve their writing skills.

A compound sentence:
- Combines two shorter sentences (so has TWO subjects)
- Joins the two sentences with a conjunction (and, or, but, so)

Here are some sample compound sentences, and they are all about Thanksgiving!

Thanksgiving is celebrated on the fourth Thursday in November, and many families gather for a traditional feast.
In 1620, the Pilgrims landed in Plymouth, Massachusetts, but they had really planned a trip to Virginia.
The Massachusetts winter was extremely cold and harsh, so everyone had to work together to survive.
The Wampanoag Indians helped the struggling Pilgrims, so they were able to harvest crops for their first feast.
Modern Americans dine on turkey and stuffing at home, or they make a reservation at a local restaurant.

ReplyDeleteThanksgiving was celebrated by the Pilgrims but Abraham Lincoln officially declared it a holiday. It is my favorite holiday and my favorite time of year. We are even having our cousins from San Francisco come to visit. We see them every Thanksgiving. My dad makes the turkey, and my mom makes the stuffing and cranberry sauce. For Thanksgiving this year my family and I are invited to two places, and since they are at different times, my mom would like us to attend both. Early in the afternoon, we are going to celebrate with our friends, and later in the evening, we will go to our relative's house to celebrate with family.
Thanksgiving is one of my favorite holidays because of the wonderful food, but also because I get to spend time with family and friends. I love to eat turkey and mashed potatoes, but my favorite is of course pumpkin pie!

We are staying in the MGM Hotel for one night, and we are seeing a show at Treasure Island Hotel called Mystere. I think it is rolling its eyes because it doesn't want to be eaten for Thanksgiving.
This Thanksgiving, I am going to my grandma's house to have a family dinner with my uncle, mom, dad, and brother. My mom makes the turkey and my grandma makes the stuffing. It takes my mom at least 4 hours to dress, and bake. Sometimes the turkey is so big, we invite my moms friends!

We all enjoy ourselves sharing the bountiful Thanksgiving feast and giving thanks for all that we have, but the men find time to notice the football scores on the television that is playing in the background. Our full Thanksgiving dinner is served in late afternoon so we spend the hours prior to dinner sampling all the different appetizers.

I am going to my cousin’s house, and he has a little brother that is 1 year old. When it is dinner time some of my family eat turkey, and the others like the stuffing better [ I usually eat turkey]. About 10 minutes later we all eat desert [desert is usually pumpkin pie] [mmm...mmm...mmm], but some of my relatives, family, and friends do not like pie. Sadly when it is night we all have to go home, but I still have a fantastic time on Thanksgiving like all of the other Thanksgiving parties I have been to.

ReplyDeleteFor Thanksgiving I am having a big feast, and my cousins are coming over. The house is decorated with lots of pumpkins, and it looks really great. The grown-ups cook dinner together, and us kids play video games while we wait. Before we eat dinner we all say what we are thankful for, and I am thankful for my family.
My favorite food is pumpkin pie, and my least favorite food is gravy. I really like mashed potatoes, and I pile them high on my plate. My mom makes pumpkin bread, and it is shaped like tiny pumpkins. When it is time for dessert I always have room, and my mom is making lots of treats.
After we eat we like to watch a movie, and I hope we watch Lord of the Rings this year. It is my favorite movie, and I love the part when the Black Rider rides the dragon. I really love Thanksgiving dinner, but the best part is having the whole week off of school!

ReplyDeleteI am very excited about Thanksgiving this year because we are celebrating at our house. In our family, we take turns hosting it, and we haven't had a turn for a few years.
Thanksgiving is my favorite meal of the whole year. I love to cook, and really enjoy making all of the food. This year I am planning on baking a lot of yummy desserts from scratch. I am making pumpkin chiffon pie, apple pie, cranberry-apple tart, and carrot cake.
I also enjoy decorating and have decorated the house with lots of garland and glass pumpkins. We even have a small pumpkin patch and scarecrows in our courtyard.
I am excited about spending the week with Maya and Roman and hope that we can do some of the baking together. Hope you all have a wonderful Thanksgiving!

My favorite compound sentence was "Thanksgiving is celebrated on the fourth Thursday in November, and many families gather for a traditional feast.", and I can make a connection with that sentence.
I gather around with lots of people for a Thanksgiving party, but they are not my family members. They are my friends and their family members, but they are all nice and friendly.
First, the kids start making a Thanksgiving centerpiece, and it always comes out amazing.
Then, the grown-ups call us down for dinner, and we usually say, "just a minute." We switch between eating and doing the craft, and the craft is usually done just before dessert.
We bring down the craft, and the parents and family members all say it is fantastic!

Our plans for Thanksgiving begin in the morning, and go throughout the day. First, we watch the Macy's Parade, and my mom is usually cooking. This year my dad is making brussel sprouts, and my mom is baking cookies. Then we get dressed, and head over to my Aunt's house to celebrate with the rest of our family. There we talk, play games, play with the dog, laugh, and reminisce of holidays gone by. We end the day with a turkey dinner, and of course, a pumpkin pie!
The next day, my parents, Aunt, Grandma and I are going to New York City. On the plane I will read, play video games, watch a movie, and sleep. We will visit a friend in Connecticut, and see the sights of Manhattan. I'm looking forward to going inside the Statue of Liberty, and seeing the view from the crown. I'm also looking forward to shopping FAO Schwarz, Toys R' Us, and ice skating in Central Park. We always visit Dylan's Candy Bar, and get a frozen hot chocolate at Serendipity. And I can't wait to get those hot nuts on the street!

ReplyDeleteThe moving images were really cool. I remember last year when you also taught us how to write compound sentence. I now use compound sentences in many articles I write. Sometimes Mrs Krauss gives us a limit of how many sentences we should write for an assignment. I usually have too many sentences and in order to shorten the number of sentences, I create compound sentences.
For Thanksgiving, my family is going to invite friends and family members. Many family members bring something special. For dessert my great aunt brings the pumpkin pie and my aunt brings chocolate chip cookies. My dad is the main chef in the family, and he cooks the turkey. My mom and I, usually make the cranberry sauce, and when she isn't looking, I quickly get a lick of the sauce. After dinner, everyone is usually very full.

Our family has two options for Thanksgiving. We can fly to New York and New Jersey, or we can stay local and celebrate with friends. As far as the menu, I like sweet potatoes and stuffing, but not cranberry sauce. We always start out the day by watching A Charlie Brown's Thanksgiving , and drinking hot chocolate.
