Skyping with New York!

Today, Mrs. Yollis Skyped with a class in New York. The New Yorkers were in the Eastern Standard Time (EST), and we were in the Pacific Standard time zone (PST).  In Los Angeles, it was 9:00 A.M. and it was noon in New York.

Acacia and Royce were our geographers for the day. They had a tough time finding Brooklyn, New York, in the index at the back of our big, blue atlas! There were so many entries!

We shared many symbols about our suburban community in California and learned all about New York!

Miss Bova and Miss Barbaro from an urban school in Brooklyn, New York.

Everyone had facts to share about California, the 31st state!

Eureka! I have found a lot of information!

We shared many facts about the Golden State! For example, the state tree is the California redwood.

Here is our greeter along with our first presenter. Do you know the capital of California?

Even though California isn't home to anymore grizzly bears, there is still one on the California flag!

We shared some school facts with the New Yorkers!

Mia wondered what kinds of books kids read in the Empire State. Many children read Diary of a Wimpy Kid! We love that book too!

Thanks, Parsa, for being our super photographer!

Many students took notes during the Skype call! Look at Logan's great information!

The Californians enjoyed their first Skype call!

Here is a link to California's state symbols.
Here is a link to New York's state symbols.

What did you learn about New York?

What did you enjoy about the Skype call?
How did we adapt during the call?

  1. Dear Mrs Yollis and Grade,

Wow how wonderful that you all got to skype with Miss Bova and Miss Barbaro.

What a great way to learn from each other. Skyping is a wonderful tool which enables you to learn together and whats even better you get to meet the other person from which you are sharing your wonderful facts with.

Great work everyone and thanks for the interesting facts too.

    From your pal,
    AA.

  2. Dear Mrs.Yollis,

I really enjoyed our Skype call to NewYork! My favorite part was hearing about what their state things were like the state fruit. I think their state tree is the prettiest. It was amazing how the kids from NewYork and our class gathered into one big group and shared about where we live! However, we did have some minor technical difficulties:(. Eventually we fixed it:)! I thought it was really fun and inspiring because we got to learn about NewYork! They answered some questions for us like what their favorite book is, and we answered for them. One of their questions were what is bamboo? We said"bamboo is a game we Californians play. You have two bars and sit on them then you try to run around and tag the other person!" I am very sorry if I confused you! Here are some facts I remember! Their state bird is the Blue Eastern Bird. Their state tree is the Sugar Maple Tree. Their state fruit is the apple. Their state beverage is very odd because you would think it was apple juice but it is not,it is milk!

  3. Dear Mrs. Yollis

I have an interesting fact about New York. New York's population is 18,000,000 people. I think that it is interesting becuase it has the third most poeple of any state in the United States of America. Plus my dad, grandma, and great grandma are from New York.

Do know any other interesting facts about New York?

    Sincerely,
    Aidan

  5. Dear Mrs. Yollis' class,

It looks like you all had a great time Skyping with the students in Brooklyn.

Royce's grandpa, Gary, grew up in Brooklyn in a neighborhood called Flatbush. He lived near a place called Ebbets Field which at the time was the home field of the Dodgers; the very same Dodgers that now play in Los Angeles. Gary was heartbroken when the Dodgers left Brooklyn because they were his favorite team.

    Best regards,

    Gregg (Royce's dad)

    Hi Mrs. Yollis' Class,

I'm excited to hear that you are learning about New York, as that is where I was born and the city I lived in until I was 5 years old. I have one funny story about our move from New York to California and I thought I would share it. Back then (a long time ago), you were able to take your dog on the airplane with you as long as they fit near the seat you were sitting in. My family took our little Lhasa Apso dog named Sunday on the plane with us in a little duffle bag and in the middle of the flight she jumped out and ran up and down the aisles for about 10 minutes! I hope you enjoy many more Skype phone calls and continue to learn about New York and other cool and interesting cities and states.

    Have a great day.

    Dana (Sammy's mom)

  7. Dear Mrs Yollis,

I really liked our Skype call with New York! One of my favorite parts of skying was learning facts about their state. I also really liked when we got to ask them and they asked us some questions. One of the questions they asked was what our favorite book was? One of the worst things that happened was that at first they couldn't see us and then we couldn't see them. Then we solved our problem by switching to a different computer.

When will we have another skype call? I really want to have one with Mr. Salsich's class and with Australia.

    From,
    Sarah

  8. Dear Mrs. Yollis' class,

I was born in New York about thirty minutes from Brooklyn. I grew up on Long Island and moved to California in 1998. Some of you may have noticed that I still have a New York accent. I may say caufee (coffee) or brutha (brother). I hope all of you get a chance to visit New York and have some New York pizza. I think it's the best in the country- ask Royce if he agrees.

Here is an interesting fact about New York:

The first capital of the United States was New York City. In 1789, George Washington took his oath as president at Federal Hall.

    Take care,

    ♡ Tara ♡

  16. Greetings from North Yorkshire,
It's hard to get back into blogging when my life is full of paper!!! So I am looking across some favourite blogs and hey, you've made my day, this is why I love working with young people. I think of all that sunshine in Southern California and my 'literally' grey sky turns blue. At some time this year I'd love to Skype with you guys, but first I think we have to put in some hard yards and get some work going.
I wonder what it is that you love about where you live?
I wonder if you can think of a link between USA and England?
Finally if you could Skype with the past who would you talk to?

It's lovely knowing that you are out there
    take care.
