A Gift from our Friends Down Under!

When Mrs. Yollis went to the office yesterday,  there was a surprise  Air-Mail package from Australia!

Inside was a manifold of gifts from our good friends and fellow collaborators, Miss McGeady and 2KM!

Inside was a wonderful letter from Miss McGready! In addition, she included  a famous Australian book by Mem Fox called Possom Magic complete with lesson plans. Also included was a carton of Weet-Bix, a tube of vegemite, and Australian flags for EVERYONE!

We thank our Australian friends!

We thank Miss McGeady and 2KM for their generosity and friendship!

  3. Hi Mrs Yollis and the Third Graders,

How exciting to get a package from Australia! We just sent one to our blogging friends in Kentucky, also including Possum Magic. It's my favourite children's book and is a great way to share a little bit of Australia with friends in other countries.

    Take care!

    Love Mrs N

P.S. I couldn't watch the video as it was marked as "private."

  4. Dear Mrs Yollis' class,

I am SO glad the package arrived safe and sound. We wanted to make it a surprise for you. Bianca's mum, Alma, gave us the idea to send you some Vegemite to taste after we mentioned how we love to eat Vegemite on Collaboration Corner. We can't wait to hear how you liked the Vegemite!

Unfortunately I can't view the video! It says it is set as private? I look forward to seeing it soon!

We also look forward to Skyping on Monday (Tuesday for us).

    From your friend,
    Miss McGeady

  8. Dear Mrs. Yollis and Class,

I think it is so wonderful that you have had an opportunity to meet such great people from a country that is so far away. I guess this really proves that technology can bring people closer.

Your open-minded learning (and even experiencing) things that are new and different to you has been amazing to watch.

Good for you! All of you!

    From, Jill (Kate's mom)

  10. Dear Mrs Yollis and class,
I forgot to say that I really loved the song that you all sang to our grade. I was amazed how you all sang beautifully from your friend Bianca.

  11. Dear Mrs. Yollis' class,

How exciting to receive the package from Miss McGready's class in Australia. That was very thoughtful of them. When I lived in Australia everyone would always try and get me to enjoy Vegemite, but I must confess I never really did grow to like the taste very much. There were so many other things about Australia that I LOVED that it was OK by me to find other things to eat for a snack. I am THRILLED that you are all making friends in other countries. I have loved traveling all of my life and I hope that this experience will inspire you to visit far away places too. It is a great way to learn more about our world.

It is always such a treat to visit your blog and read about the things you are experiencing this year in 3rd grade.

    Thank you Mrs. Yollis!
Thank you Miss McGready! It is teachers like you all around the world that make children love to learn.

  12. Hi Mrs. Yollis and Class,

How amazing that you can post up a video for your Aussie friends to see after you got that amazing gift package from them. Back in the old days we had to do boring stuff like write letters! :)

It's easy to see the things that make both classes so similar but it's even more fun to show each other the differences in our cultures. Do you plan to send them a package back? If so, what do you think you'll include to show the Australian children as examples of some of your favorite things from America?

    Best,

    Eric (Ben's dad)

  14. Dear Miss McGeady,

Thank you for the wonderful gifts from Down Under! Ethan really enjoys waving the Australian flag and is so proud to have friends in Australia! In the past, our family had spent some time in both Melbourne and Sydney. This is when we were first introduced to vegemite. It goes great on sandwiches! As a parent, I just wanted to personally thank you for sharing your culture with our children.

    Sincerely,

    Ethan's Mom (Mrs. Yollis' Class)

  15. Dear Mrs Harding and Ethan's mum,

It was very sweet of you both for personally thanking me!

The best thing about technology is that it can break down the barriers between distance, time zones and cultures! I am having so much fun on this learning journey with my students and I think your Mrs Yollis is an amazing teacher!

Mrs Harding,I also hope that this connection inspires our students to travel to far away places.

Ethan's mum, it is great to hear that you have spent some time in Australia and that you like our favourite spread - Vegemite!

    Sincerely,
    Miss McGeady

  16. Hello Mrs. Yollis! That must have been exciting! My grandpa went down to Australia once and brought back some native hunting things. One was a club, another was a boomerang and the other was a fishing spear. What was your favourite part of the package?

  22. Dear Mrs. Yollis,

I think it is really nice of 2KM to send us a package. My favorite gift that they gave us was the Australian flags. It's too bad we can't Skype with them because daylight savings just happened so we move the clock forward. So when it's 9:00 in Australia it's 3:00 here.

    Sincerely,
    Nick

  23. Dear Mrs. Yollis,

That sounds very exciting for your class! My friend Jollene and my owner bought me from a pet shop. The flags that you have gotten were cool. I know what Down Under means, it means Australia and New Zealand. Now I have to go into my cage!

    Sincerely,
    Cutie

It is exciting that we got very cool stuff from Australia. Even the flags were the most popular because we are going to use them on when we Skype.

  26. Dear Mrs. Yollis,

I REALLY thought all of us should get an important American symbol. Instead of you buying all of the flags or a book, we could ask our parents to buy them! If there was a book we could give them that they had no idea existed, I bet it would be a good one. If you don't like the idea it's okay. I want the best for all in 2KM (and our class)!

    Your student,
    Richie

  27. Dear Mrs. Yollis,

It was so nice for 2KM to send all the things. I like the Possum Magic book so far. I can't wait for the Skype with 2KM! The best thing I like was the flags they brought because I have never seen an Australian flag. What did you like the most inside the package?

    Sincerely,

    Ava

  29. Dear Mrs. Yollis,

The video is great! I too can not believe how generous 2KM is. I was the one who said the line "Weetbix." It is kind of disappointing for me because the Skype was canceled on the day we needed to do it on. To tell you the truth, I did not care for the Vegimite so much. I know other people like it and I''m glad I tried it. Maybe I'll like it when I am an adult!

  30. Dear Mrs. Yollis,

I can't wait for the skype with 2KM because we can say thank you to them for the fun gifts .

I LOVED the book Possum Magic. I liked the book because the possum was invisible, and he had to eat a vegemite sandwich to be visible again. What did you think of possum magic?
