Video: Mrs. Yollis Talks About Commenting!

I am passion about educational blogging. In my 27 years of teaching, I have never seen anything have such a positive impact on learning as educational blogging.

Not only does blogging improve reading and writing skills, it is also a great place to help children build a positive digital footprint and learn how to contribute to an online community.

Below is a video I recorded with my friends, Ms. Holly Clark and Ms. Tanya Avrith. They use Google HangOuts to record teachers sharing innovated practices from their classrooms. Their show is called EduSlam, and I highly recommend checking it out. These two ladies have a plethora of professional development waiting just for you!

I spoke about the power of blogging and the steps I use to teach commenting skills. The comment section is where our blog comes to life. It is truly an online learning community!

Here is a video with some students talking about what they love about blogging. Perhaps they can persuade you to blog with your students!

What are some blogging benefits you see?

  1. Dear Mrs. Yollis,

I like that you introduced the video that we made last year. Everything that we listed in the video is sure for you to have fun, and to be safe. Blogging can be fun, but you have to be safe. When you go to a website, NEVER EVER click on any advertisements. You can receive virus on your computer, spread the virus, and the computers that have virus don't work. If you accidentally clicked on an advertisement, don't be all freaked out. Don't panic. Just click on the "X" in the corner of your screen, and it might work. Just because I said this, doesn't mean that you could click on advertisements. Here is what Rocky says about advertisements:

NEVER EVER CLICK ON ADVERTISEMENTS! THEY CAN REALLY HARM YOUR COMPUTER AND YOU WON'T BE ABLE TO USE IT! IT'S LIKE YOU RAN OVER YOUR COMPUTER WITH YOUR LAND (RANGE) ROVER!

It seems like I am over doing my words, but believe me, it is not pleasant to have a computer that has virus on it. Do you know about virus?

    Your cyber-safety-student,
    Heather

  2. Dear Mrs. Yollis,

I really enjoyed watching your video on EduSlam. What a neat idea for a show! I see many benefits to blogging. My students are motivated by the blog format, and they are interested in the posts they read, particularly those found on your 365 blog. Students become very engaged in blogging, which helps to improve literacy skills.

When bloggers ask open-ended questions, they prompt readers to think, and this often results in a very interesting conversation or thread. Another benefit I see with blogging is that students are more cognizant of their audience. Knowing that others will be reading their comments prompts students to put forth more effort.

I enjoy communicating with you and your students on the west coast and will continue to visit and comment upon your blogs!

    Your friend,
    Mrs. Talley

  3. Dear Mrs. Yollis,

I do see benefits from blogging and commenting. Heather is more motivated to write and her writing skill is improved a lot. She will do research herself while answering questions on the blog. Also her observation skill has been enhanced and that is important to solve problems.

    Sincerely,
    Echo (Heather's mom)

  4. Mrs. Yollis,

My name is Sarah Barnett and I am a student at the University of South Alabama. I LOVED this is post. The videos of your class telling all about their blogging experience was motivating and fun! I am new to the blogging world, so it was nice to see that children so young can learn and connect with others all over the world. Your students seemed to be having the best time with all the blogging they are doing. They also seem to love receiving comments and connecting with other children their age in different countries.Blogging is definitely a wonderful way to incorporate fun into the day that is for sure! My experience has been awesome learning under Dr. Strange. He is a great teacher! I hope to see more and more from your blog and see more of what your class is learning! Please check out our class blog at edm310.blogspot.com and my personal blog at barnettsarahedm310.blogspot.com.

I hope you and your students have a wonderful week :)

  5. Hi Mrs. Yollis,
My name is Tracy and I am also a student in EDM 310 at The University of South Alabama. I enjoyed your video on commenting. I agree that the comment section is where our blogs come to life. I think I get more excited than third graders when I receive comments on my blog post. You and your students have been such an inspiration to me. Blogging will definitely be apart of my future classroom. I can assure you that I will continue to follow you all long after my days with EDM310 and Dr. Strange are over. Please feel free to follow me on twitter @tafulofaith. Thanks for being apart of my personal learning network.

  6. Hi Mrs. Yollis!

My name is Shakeya Andrews and I am a student in EDM 310 at the University of South Alabama. Your video was fun and interesting to watch. I love the way you get parents involved with what the students are doing. It is important that parents are monitoring what their children are doing especially if they are able to blog outside of the classroom. Dr. Strange teaches our EDM 310 class to leave a comment on our peers blog that contains quality, which is why I found it interesting that you inform your students to proofread their comments, ask questions, and leave specific comments when they are commenting on other students blogs. I believe once they master this skill they will be able to leave comments with quality and write blogs that are detailed and grammatically correct as well. Also, I love your 1-2 point system! I may have to use it in my future classroom. What a great way to get students involved!

    Shakeya

  7. Hi Mrs. Yollis and class!
I just watch your video on the benefits of blogging and it was very impressive. I feel apart of the on-line learning community that you all so eloquently spoke about. I am inspired every time I see you all making such positive digital footprints. Mrs. yollis, may I borrow your acroynym, Yappy, to use in my future classroom so that I may help my students to not only stay safe but to practice staying safe on-line on a daily basis? Keep up the the good work class and Happy Blogging!
    Tracy
