Welcome back to a new school year!
Here's a video greeting from Mrs. Yollis!
Here are some links to the summer events mentioned in the Welcome Back video:
1. ISTE Insights ~ Learn about Promethean's Thank a Teacher Contest and what Mrs. Yollis learned at the Texas technology conference!
2. Photo from the family wedding in Montana. Notice I wrote a paragraph about my Uncle Don using the Step-Up to Writing Format that you learned in second grade! This color coded Step-Up to Writing paragraph format will be used in third grade, so be sure to review my example and refresh your memory. :-)
3. Photo from my time at my family lake cottage in Minnesota!

Dear Mrs Yollis and students
ReplyDeleteI am excited to hear that your new school year is beginning!
Students who were in your class as Grade 2s will know me, but let me introduce myself to your new students.
I am Mrs McKenzie and I teach a Year 1/2/3 class in New Zealand. My students are aged 5, 6 and 7 years old. Some will start turning 8 soon.
My students and I have enjoyed sharing blogging and learning with Mrs Yollis' students over the past three years, and I hope we will continue this year too.
I'm sure you will all have a fabulous year in Mrs Yollis' class!
warm wishes
☆ Mrs McKenzie ☆
Dear Mrs. McKenzie and students,
DeleteWe appreciate your comment. In fact, you were the very first comment of the year!
We hope you and your students are enjoying a great school year. Yes, we will connect.
Sincerely,
Mrs. Y♥llis' students
Hi Mrs Yollis,
ReplyDeleteMy name is Connor and I am from 4KJ at Leopold Primary School in Geelong.
Here is a tip about a comment:
Always Leave a quality comment.
Your Blogging Buddy,
Connor(4KJ)
Hi Mrs Yollis,
ReplyDeleteI am Paris, a student from 4KJ. Our class realized you have started another fantastic year where you are! We are about half way through our year and a fair couple of weeks ago we had our Winter holidays, which those holidays were when my birthday was! I am know 10 but know let's get back on track and talk about your new year coming ahead for you!
I am sure you are very excited about having new students in your grade. I am just going to say that the people that are going to be in your grade are very lucky, because they are going to have a great teacher this year. And if your not sure what I am saying the good teacher is... YOU!
I watched your video about a new school year. You spoke very clearly and the footage was awesome! So is the picture you put in of the school I think it is... Anyway they look terrific!
Lately in our grade we have been doing a plants in action topic and we love it! We planted some plants but in cotton wool! It may sound weird but this is how we did it:
1. got a handful of cotton wool and put it in a ziplock bag
2. Very, very, very lightly wet the wool
3. put about 4-5 long beans and about 2-3 broad beans in the cotton wool.
4. We left the bag open for air, which seems to be going well because there already 13 cm long!
That is how we did it. If you have any questions just ask.
I am sure you are excited. How do you think the new kids will start off? I think great because your such a wonderful teacher.
Got 2 Gallop,
Paris ♥
P.S: I and my friends use 'Got 2 Gallop' because we are HORSE CRAZY! See ya.
Hi Mrs Y♥llis,
ReplyDeleteThanks for writing this blog post. I am sure you new grade 3's will love having you as their teacher. I wish you were mine.
My name is Olivia (Liv for short) and I am from 4KJ. I have heard you guys are looking forward to hearing from us and about what we are doing if that makes sense.
I don't know if you have ever seen but I am always blogging 24/7. You leave a reply and I will be there straight away to see it.
In 4KJ we have been learning about idioms. They are so fun and I am going to tell you what they are because I don't think you would have heard about them.
Idioms are a phrase that doesn't mean what the phrase is actually saying so for example, this maths lesson is a piece of cake, it doesn't really mean that the the maths lesson is a piece of cake it means that it is very easy.
I have been having a lot of fun with them and if you would like to check it our blog post out then go to our blog and it should be the second post there.
It would be so cool if you could look at my blog too and I will give you the link right now. olivias.global2.vic.edu.au
I hope you get maybe just a little bit of time to have a look on my blog and it would be awesome if you could show your class.
Got 2 Gallop,
Liv  ;)
Hi Mrs Yollis and class,
ReplyDeleteMy name is Meg, and I am in Miss Jordan's class, in grade 4. Miss Jordan told us that you guys went on school vacation. It's great to have blogging buddies to talk to again. By the way great post!
I haven't been up to much but I have been looking at this post and been doing heaps of blogging, we have all got our own blogs this year and here is the link to my blog meg.global2.vic.edu.au, feel free to leave a comment. In our classroom we are doing conferences and learning about causes and effects. It has been a load of fun.
I love the video Mrs Yollis. I was quite surprised when I heard it. You are so lucky that you got to go to a wedding and Minnesota. I have always wanted to go there.
Thank a Teacher Contest, that sounds interesting. I would love to do that. Was it fun?
Here is a short tip about blogging
. Make sure you use paragraphs in your comment so
it is easy to read!
Here are some questions for you guys:
1. Are you guys excited to be blogging?
2. Are you ready for a new year?
3. Do you think you will love or like Mrs Yollis?
Happy Blogging,
Meg (4KJ)
Dear Meg,
DeleteMy name is Keira and I am a former and new student of Mrs. Yollis.
I am excited to continue blogging throughout the year again since I was improving a lot since last year. Hopefully I can improve even more this year!
I am extremely ready for a new year. I am so thrilled to read, write, and learn even more things than last year. I am hoping that we get a lot of silent reading so I can read more.
I already know the answer to this question. I love Mrs. Yollis and her teaching style. She makes learning fun each and every day. She helps us when we cannot figure things out. She is the best teacher you could possibly ever get.
Sincerely,
Keira
Dear Mrs Yollis and your new class,
ReplyDeleteHello, my name is Jess and I am from 4KJ.
Welcome back!
I am sure you will all enjoy starting the blogging world if you don't know how. In 4KJ we do a lot of blogging that we all enjoy.
We learn new things and we also get our own blogs.
The blogging world is a great thing to be part of.
I hear that you have just gotten back from your school holidays.
I am sure you all enjoyed your holidays.
What did you do on your holidays?
I wish I could same the same but we have not come back from any holidays.
We have just come back from school camp though.
I think we all thought it was the best.
I don't think any of us wanted to leave but it was good to see our families again.
In camp we went to the Lolly Shop, we also did bike riding, walks and great food to.
Keep up the great blogging everyone.
From Jess :)
Dear Mrs Yollis and class,
ReplyDeleteI'm Harry from 4KJ in Australia.
In class we have been learning about fractions. Yesterday we had a piece of rope and some pieces of paper with fractions on them. We pegged the pieces of paper where we think the fraction goes. We went pretty good.
Here are a few tips for new bloggers:
Use paragraphs
Ask questions
I could go on for ever
Bye,
Harry (4KJ)
Dear Mrs Yollis and students,
ReplyDeleteHi I am Eb and I am in 4KJ. I am in year 4. I live in Leopold Australia.
Welcome following students! I am sure that you will have a lovely year with Mrs Yollis. Make sure that you learn lots!
In our class we have been learning all about idioms.
What are idioms?
Idioms are phrases that have different meanings to the phrase. For example:
A leopard can't change it's spots. But it really means that you can't change who you are.
Have a great year and I might see you soon,
Eb
Dear Mrs. Yollis,
ReplyDeleteI am freaking out that I get to have the best teacher in the world as a third grade teacher, just like second grade! I know this is going to be a great school year for me and my classmates.
I am the most excited to see you tomorrow,
Peter
Dear Peter,
DeleteWelcome back, my friend! I am not surprised that you are the first third grade student to comment! You will be a fabulous role model for the other third grade students!
What kinds of things are you looking forward to in third grade?
I am excited to see you too!
Your third grade teacher,
Mrs. Y♥llis
Dear Class,
DeleteThere is nothing different that I can say from Peter's comment above. Being in the second and third class is good, but being in just a third grade class is even better. For those who haven't had Mrs. Yollis, she is a very good teacher and it will be fun being in her class.
Your classmate,
Bryce
Dear Mrs. Yollis,
ReplyDeleteWell, it's almost here! I can't wait! This is going to be the best school year ever!
Third grade is going to be great, especially because I'm spending it with you as my teacher again! I'm so lucky to have you twice in a row!
I am excited to see some of my returning classmates from last year, and to meet new ones!
I am also looking forward to going on new field trips that I saw the third graders go to last year!
See you all really soon!
Your former and new student,
Chloe
@ Chloe,
DeleteThanks for being such a great blogger! You are an excellent example for all too!
I'm looking forward to having you in my class this year. For one thing, I love your attitude. You always look at situations in positive ways, and I think that is a great attribute about you. You are also a hard working.
What was your favorite part about our first day?
Your proud teacher,
Mrs. Y♥llis
Dear Mra. Yollis,
DeleteThanks for all the nice comments!
It's the first full-day of school, and I'm so excited to see you again!
My favorite part of yesterday, was seeing you :-), and meeting all my former and new classmates.
Did you like meeting former and new classmates?
Your student,
Chloe
Dear Mrs. Yollis,
ReplyDeleteI'm so happy to be In your class this year because of all the amazing things we learned last year and also all the fun we had. I'm really looking forward to an awesome and fantastic year to come.
Sincerely,
Ali and mom
@ Ali and his mom,
DeleteThank you so much for jumping right in with the blogging! As we learned last year, regular practice with quality writing make a real difference!
What is some advice you can offer our new students who have never blogged?
Your proud teacher,
Mrs. Y♥llis
Dear Mrs. Yollis,
DeleteI want to give new bloggers some advice. You should never be shy to blog like I used to be because it's actually really fun. Also, never write your last name.
Sincerely,
Ali and mom
Dear Mrs Yollis,
ReplyDeleteThe first day of 3rd grade was very exciting and fun!!
I feel very lucky to have you as my teacher as we share the same passion for computers:)
You are the best teacher ever!!
Your pupil,
Mia
@ Mia,
DeleteCongratulation on your first comment! I feel very lucky to have you as my student, and I look forward to learning with you. We certainly had a terrific first day!
What kinds of fun things did you do this summer?
What is something you'd like to know about blogging?
Your proud teacher,
Mrs. Y♥llis
Dear Mrs Yollis
DeleteThis summer was very special to me.
After a long nine months of waiting my mom gave birth to my cute baby brother Natanel.
I went to summer camp where we went to some very interesting places such as the circus at Staples Center.
Isn't that a special summer?!:)
A happy big sister,
Mia
and thats what I did over the summer.
Yourp
Dear Mrs. Yollis and class,
ReplyDeleteLast night I could barely sleep because I was so excited for school to start! I wanted the meet new people and see my classmates from last year.
I am so happy I got the best teacher two years in a row! I am sure that we will have a marvelous year. The first day is already off to a great start.
Last year was very interesting. Our class last year was a split class. A split class is a class with more than one grade of students. Mrs. Yollis' class had second graders and third graders. I was one of the second graders. There were ten second graders and twelve third graders. Another thing that is interesting is that when the third graders had a field trip, they went with another class. That happened to the second graders too. I hope there will be more split classes in my future.
See you soon,
Heather
@ Heather,
DeleteWow! You continue to impress me with your quality comments! You mentioned that you were so excited about the new year that you had trouble sleeping. Guess what? Teacher feel that way too!
Thank you for summarizing some of the things you enjoyed about the split class last year. I remember when the second graders went to Chinatown and the third graders stayed at school. We looked up the restaurant on Google Earth so we could sort of be with you all! Fun!
What advice to you have for our new bloggers?
Your proud teacher,
Mrs. Y♥llis
@ Mrs. Yollis and class,
DeleteYes, I do have some advice for the class.
1. Proofread you comment before you publish it
2. If you are going to put a exclamation mark in the sentence, you only need one: Example: Mrs. Yollis is the best teacher ever !
3. When you are replying to someone, instead of typing Dear _________, you type @ _________
4. End you comment with a warm ending like Warmly, ________, Sincerely, ________, From, ________, Yours Truly, ________, and Warm wishes, ________
Those are all the tips I have for now.
Warmly,
Heather
@ Heather,
DeleteWow! Thanks so much for your great tips! I love how you put your ideas in html bold and that you numbered your tips. I would like you to share your comment tomorrow morning. You are a great blogger!
Thanks for being so helpful!
Your proud teacher,
Mrs. Y♥llis
@ Mrs. Yollis,
DeleteI do have some more tips for commenting. Another tip is: Do not put your last name in your comment!
I do have some other tips, but I just can't remember them for some reason. Do you have any tips?
Happy blogging,
Heather
Dear Mrs. Yollis,
ReplyDeleteIt's marvelous to have you as my teacher again this year!
During the year, who knows what new surprises we might have!
What was your favorite part of our first day at school today?
Which school years are your favorite?
Mrs. Yollis' fan,
A♣shi
@ A♣shi,
DeleteI am so pleased to have you in my class again this year! You are a hard working student who is helpful to all. In addition, you always demonstrate initiative! Do you remember what that means?
You asked me about my favorite part of the day. I would say I really enjoyed meeting everyone and watching people help one another.
As a seasoned blogger, what advice can you offer our new bloggers?
Your proud teacher,
Mrs. Y♥llis
Dear Mrs. Yollis and class,
DeleteThank you for commenting on my addition!
You asked if I remember what initiative means.
Yes, I do. Initiative means starting something. For example, there was a discussion between the Board of Education, and no one knew what to say. A directer took the initiative to start the discussion. Has any one of you recently come across a new or interesting word that you haven't heard before? Do you have another way to express the word initiative?
Here is a tip for new bloggers: Ask some questions to start a conversation.
Yours truly,
Aashi
Dear Mrs. Yollis,
ReplyDeleteI am so excited to have you as my teacher! This is going to be a great year!
From,
Clare
@ Clare,
DeleteI am very proud that you were able to leave your first comment! Congratulations! It looks like you proofread everything, just like I require!
I'm curious, what is your favorite browser? Do you use Chrome, Firefox, Safari or some other browser? Ask your parents to be sure.
Your proud teacher,
Mrs. Y♥llis
Der Mrs. Yollis,
ReplyDeleteWelcome back another fabulous year of learning and blogging!
Having an introductory video is such a friendly idea! Have you done this before? It must really help students get to know you quickly!
It was a thrill seeing you at ISTE and having a Promethean cupcake!
What read aloud book will you start your year with Mrs. Yollis?
Your WA librarian friend,
Mrs. Hembree
Dear Mrs. Hembree,
DeleteI am new here at our school, and I was wondering if you can reply on my comment and to tell all about your job. Is it hard or not?
Your new librarian friend,
Emilyn
P.S. I am in Mrs. Yollis' class
@Emilyn,
DeleteWhen you love what you do, a job is never hard. I love being a librarian.
I spent 20 years as a classroom teacher like Mrs. Yollis. I used to teach first grade, and a long time ago I taught high school.
Now I am librarian and it's the best job ever because I can help students all over the world find books that make them happy.
I will tell you that when you do a good job, it takes time. I have to read a lot, and search for more information on the internet quite often.
Why are you asking? Do you like to read? Are you thinking about jobs in your future? Do you have a favorite book?
Your WA Librarian friend,
Mrs. Hembree
P.S. Please ask Mrs. Yollis to read The One and Only Ivan to your class this year. I promise you will LOVE it!
Dear Mrs Yollis,
ReplyDeleteThank you for teaching me about commenting.
You are the best teacher ever.
From,
Chance
@ Chance,
DeleteCongratulations on your first comment! Well done!
Thank you for saying that I am the best teacher ever. I appreciate your kind words. Helping students learn brings me great satisfaction, and I feel lucky to be a teacher.
I'm wondering, what is your favorite browser? Do you use Chrome, Firefox, Safari or some other browser? Ask your parents to verify your answer.
Your proud teacher,
Mrs. Y♥llis
Dear Mrs Yollis,
DeleteI use safari because Chrome and Firefox
don't work on my computer. I don't have the system requirements to download the other browsers on my Mac. How do you make a heart and a clover Mrs Yollis?
From,
Chance
Hi Mrs. Yollis,
ReplyDeleteI am very excited to be in your class. I can't wait to see you tomorrow and you are the best 3th grade teacher. I couldn't sleep the night before the school start. See you tomorrow!
Your friend,

@ Roxana,
DeleteWow! You have left your very first blog comment! Well done!
Thank you for saying that I am a great teacher. :-) I love teaching, and I'm glad that it shows!
I have a question for you. What is your favorite browser? Do you use Chrome, Firefox, Safari or some other browser? Ask your parents to be sure.
Your proud teacher,
Mrs. Y♥llis

Dear Mrs. Yollis and Classmates,
ReplyDeleteI have loved the few days we have had at school so far. My favorite activities are Silent Speedball and Alpha Smarts. I even enjoyed doing homework for the first time today! I am excited to spend this year in your classroom. I have never had a seat sack before and they seem pretty cool! This is going to be a great school year.
Your student and classmate,
Jemma
Dear Jemma,
DeleteI agree seat sack is pretty cool and this school year will be awesome!
Your friend,
Mia
Dear Mrs Yollis,
ReplyDeleteWe had problems with the Safari browser when posting and we are now trying Chrome.
Nicholas and mom
Dear Mrs. Yollis and class,
ReplyDeleteWelcome to a new school year!
There are many great experiences awaiting you this year as you explore the world through blogging. Imagine, when you write a post it can be seen around the world in an instant. I think some exciting experiences lie ahead.
I suspect you will see my name in the comments of a number of your posts this school year. :)
Ross Mannell
Teacher (retired), N.S.W., Australia
@ Mr. Mannell,
DeleteHi! Our names are Nizma and Keira. We think that comment was wonderful.
Nizma is excited to be joining the wonderful world of blogging.
Keira is a student from last year. She is a blogging expert now.
We will comment to you more later.
Sincerely,
Nizma and Keira
Dear Mrs. Yolllis,
ReplyDeleteI have been enjoying the past few days with you. I am enjoying the Alphasmarts. I also like getting stickers and earning time on the bean bags. They're so comfy! The homework is really fun! This is turning out to be a fabulous year!
Your student,
Darius
Hi Mrs. Yollis,
ReplyDeleteI am happy because I am learning how to blog. If I wasn't in your class, I wouldn't be blogging right now. A quick tip for new bloggers is to write something interesting and something to share with others.
Your friend,
Roxana
Dear mrs. Yollis ,
ReplyDeleteI had a great day today eating the Popsicles , they were delicious . Also I had a great time playing the alphasmart game , I learned a lot of typing .
I hope we do alphasmart tomorrow again :)
Sincerely
Ali
Dear Mrs. Yollis,
ReplyDeleteI just learned how to blog and I am having so much fun.
This is my first year at our school, and I have already made so many friends,
I also have a great, wonderful and amazing teacher.
Your pupil,
Emilyn
Dear Mrs. Yollis,
ReplyDeleteThis has been an amazing school year so far! :)
I'm so happy to have you as my teacher! Your one of the best teachers I've ever known! Most of the time you're a really fun person and your showing a great example for your students.
How was your 3rd grade school year? It is a pleasure to have you as my teacher.
Your pupil,
Sheila
Dear Mrs. Yollis
ReplyDeleteSo far I've been enjoying school. I want to tell you more about my fabulous time at the beach yesterday. I have been trying to find out what type of jellyfish stung me. My hypothesis (guess) is that it was a moon jellyfish because they are found in most oceans. I love boogie boarding. There were some pretty good waves out there. It was one of the best times of my 8 years. But, there was a big rip current and baby leopard sharks. Horrible combo! Did you know that rip currents can travel as fast as 8 feet per second? That's faster than an Olympic swimmer can sprint.
Your student,
Darius
Dear Mrs. Yollis
ReplyDeleteI just got my cast off, I am so excited!
And guess what I got to keep it.
Can't what to see the class, can I bring my cast?
Your Pupil,
Emilyn
Dear Emilyn,
DeleteI am happy you got your cast off! Did you know that I broke my collar bone and my arm? I had to get a cast too. What does your arm feel like? My arm felt very wobbly. You must tell Mrs. Yollis to let us play silent speed ball, you must.
Your friend,
Darius
Dear Darius,
DeleteFine I will ask Mrs.Yollis if we can play silent speed ball.
But next time PLEASE use the word please just like I did.
Your friend,
Emilyn
Dear Emilyn,
DeleteI'm sorry if I didn't use the word please. It was our homework to write a sentence including a command. Also that sounds more proper. But next time I will use the word
please.
Your friend,
Darius
Dear Mrs. Yollis and class,
ReplyDeleteHere are some of my thoughts about the class and Mrs. Yollis. I think my classmates are phenomenal. Everyone has their own talent! I think Mrs. Yollis is an excellent teacher and outstanding role model. She is fantastic at language, math and science. What do the rest of you think about our class and teacher? What do you think your talent is? Please reply to me!
Your student and classmate,
Jemma
Dear Jemma,
DeleteI think Mrs. Yollis is a great role model too. After all she is the greatest teacher ever. So, you would like to know what my talent is? Try and find out by asking me at least least 5 questions. If you can guess, I'll try to ask Mrs. Yollis to give you a sticker.
Your friend (ever since preschool),
Darius
Dear Mrs. Yollis,
ReplyDeleteI was wrong. I did not get stung by a moon jellyfish. I still haven't found out what type of jellyfish is was. Maybe we (the whole class) can find out together. Moon jellyfish are not found in the Pacific Ocean. They are found in the Atlantic Ocean and other seas. I hope I don't get stung again. I hope we can figure out other ocean mysteries too.
Your student,
Darius
Dear Mrs. Yollis,
ReplyDeleteToday ( Wednesday Sep. 17, 2013) I had basketball practice. It was fun and I challenged an eight year old and I won! I had scored 32 points which is rounded to 30 if you round to the nearest ten. 30/40 is what you should write on paper and circle 30. Remember, "if the neighbor next door is five or more round up,round up."
Your student,
Darius
Dear Mrs. Yollis,
ReplyDeleteI requested a Beyblade from Amazon. Amazon will send it to me shortly. With any luck they will drop it off at my house in 1 or 2 days.A Beyblade is like a best friend. You battle with it and never replace it. Some are special and rare. For example, I am getting Tornado Cosmic Pegasus Spark version, which is both special and rare like a good friend.
From,
Darius
Dear Mrs. Yollis,
ReplyDeleteMy Beyblade arrived today. It is very special because it stands taller than the other Beyblades and it sparks as it spins and crashes into other Beys. I am going to post a photograph of it while it is spinning. I hope you enjoy the photograph.
Your student,
Darius
