December 12, 2012, also known as 12/12/12, was a wonderful day in room 12!
After the second graders read The Big Bushy Mustache
by Gary Soto, we all made mustache disguises just like the boy in the story. Do you recognize any of these bloggers hiding behind their mighty mustaches? Beverly, is that you?

At exactly 12/12/12 at 12:12:12 we stopped and looked at the magnificent number
and at that magnificent handlebar mustache!

Just when we thought the day couldn't get any better, we attended the online Edublog Awards!
According to their website: The Edublog Awards was set up in response to community concerns relating to how schools, districts and educational institutions were blocking access of learner and teacher sites for educational purposes. The purpose of the Edublog awards is to promote and demonstrate the educational values of these social media.
I'd like to give a special thank you to Sue Waters, Ronnie Burt, and Steve Hargadon who were the perfect hosts of the event! Their dedication and commitment to meaningful integration of technology is appreciated!
Here is a list of the nominations and the winners. It's a fabulous list of global resources for educators.
We were thrilled to win for Best Class Blog!
In addition, our good friends, 4KM and 4KJ, were finalists out of the 34 shortlisted class blogs!

I am exceedingly proud of the Most Influential Posts. One of my former students, Jaden won with a terrific post about the 10 Things He's Learned From Blogging. My November is Family Blogging Month became a finalist as well. Bringing family into the classroom through blogging has proven to be a successful way to strengthen the home-school connection and make learning meaningful. The post generated nearly 150 comments from grandparents, parents, siblings, aunts, uncles, cousins, family, and friends. Having Family Blogging Month is a great way to a build a learning community.
Other Highlights of the Edublog Awards:
- Mrs. Morris, from Australia, was a finalist for Best Teacher Blog.
- Mrs Hembree and her students were a finalist in the Best Librarian/Library category.
- Mr Avery and his class were finalists in the category Best Use of Media/Video.
- Ross Mannell, a retired teacher from Australia was a finalist in the Best Individual Tweeter category. We learn so much from his incredible comments!
Thank you for supporting our blog!
Did you attend the ceremony? If so, what did you enjoy about the virtual room?

ReplyDelete12/12/12 was certainly a great day for you all. Congratulations on your Best Class blog award, it is well-deserved. I'm glad my votes were able to help out all of our blogging buddies.
What I like best about class blogging is all of the great connections and friendships that we make!
We are now on our summer break until the end of January. Luckily I will have all the current B4 students back in B4 next year, plus a few new students so we will look forward to connecting with again in our new school year.
warm wishes
Mrs McKenzie in New Zealand
Dear Mrs. McKenzie and B4,
DeleteThank you for congratulating us! We appreciate it!
We read that you were on summer break. We are almost on winter break.
How are you enjoying your summer break?
Here in the northern hemisphere it is almost winter. Here it is not snowing, but it is cold. Outside it is 54˚F (12˚C), and it is suppose to rain tonight.
Some students will be going skiing during the break. They will have to drive or fly to get to some skiing places.
Your comrades,
Peter & Nate
Dear Peter and Nate
DeleteI have enjoyed my first week of my summer break. The weather is gradually warming up. This week our days have been around 20˚C, but by the middle of summer the temperature will be around 30˚C or more. Many of our students will spend time swimming in the local river.
How long do you get for your winter break? Will you get to go skiing, or do you have other activities planned?
happy holidays
Mrs McKenzie
Dear Mrs. Yollis,
ReplyDeleteCongratulations to you and your wonderful class! What an honor. Well done! I also love all your 12/12/12 pictures. Mustaches, moments in history and awards. The Mayans didn't mention this, but we're sure glad it ended this way! :)
Congrats,
Dina
Dear Mrs. Yollis,
ReplyDeleteCongratulation to you and your awesome class! We are so happy you won! Well deserved.
By the way the mustache picture looks really good! What a wonderful class.
Congrats!
Ali and his mom
Dear Ali and his mom,
DeleteThank you for taking your time to write a comment on our blog.
We agree, that the mustache picture is really good. Bryce likes to have so much support from our friends and families that voted for us.
Do you think we will win for best class blog next year?
Sincerely
Bryce and Chl♣e
Dear Mrs. Yollis and class,
ReplyDeleteWhat an incredible ending for 2012. With the growing number of global educational bloggers, competition for the Edublog awards is getting tougher yet, once again, the quality of this blog and the student bloggers as well as others we know has shone through. Well done everyone. :)
I would like to thank you and 4KM and 4KJ for nominating me for the "Best Individual Tweeter". It was a pleasant surprise. I'm normally hovering in the background enjoying my visits to class and student blogs.
The moustaches look brilliant. At first I wondered what strange class was pictured then I thought you had all applied some sort of miracle moustache growth cream but I see you made them. They look very convincing, especially Beverley’s growth. Do I see someone where the moustache escaped to make very bushy eyebrows? :)
12/12/12 at 12:12:12... What an incredible combination of numbers! To see something similar, we would have to wait another 89 years until 2101 when the date becomes, 01/01/01 01:01:01. Let's see, I would be 147 if I wait to see that date. With an age like that, I think I would make the record books.
We do have another interesting date coming up next year but we need to use the 24 hour clock. The date is...
11/12/13 14:15:16
The way Australia and U.S.A. write dates would make this different for each country...
U.S.A. - November 12, 2013 at 2:15 p.m. and 16 seconds
Australia - December 11, 2013 at 2:15 p.m. and 16 seconds
You have now reached the halfway point in your school year whereas 4KM's and 4KJ's time together is coming to an end. I wonder what learning adventures lay ahead for all of us in 2013?
2012 has been my first full year of blogging and blog commenting. I wonder how many blogs I have visited and how many words I have typed?
A class had asked me how many blogs I visit each day. Sometimes it's as little as five or six (very rarely has it been zero) if I am busy or spend time on an extended comment but, yesterday (Friday), I kept count. Even though it was a busy day where I was often out, I managed to visit 28 blogs and left comments. I suppose, over 2012, I have visited thousands of posts and perhaps hundreds of blogs. What an amazing journey into the quality work of students it has been.
I hope you all have a wonderful break for the Christmas season ahead. While not as long as Australia’s Christmas summer vacation (our longest break), I know you are all going to pack in fun with family and friends.
Looking forward to many more visits in 2013.
@RossMannell
Teacher (retired), N.S.W., Australia
@ Mr. Mannell,
DeleteWow! You are the best commenter in the entire world! 28 blogs in one day! When do you sleep? :-)
Thanks for the information about the date: 01/01/01. We will be in our 90s when that happens. We'll look back on this date when we first learned about it.
Sincerely,
Shayna, Ali, and Bryce
@ Mr. Mannell,
DeleteWhat a quality comment! Do you know how long it took you to type that comment?
Your special date was amazing! My date would be...
11/11/11 and the time would be...
11:11:11. What would your date be if it is in 2011?
What a vast age! I think you WOULD be in the World Record Book. I wish I was in the World Record Book.
Your friend,
Heather
Dear Mrs Yollis and class,
ReplyDeleteCongratulations once again on your outstanding win.
I love the fact you all had an awesome day on 12/12/12 this is one day that you all won't forget.
Loved the photos with you all wearing a mustache I had a huge laugh.
What I love about blogging is how we can all learn from one and other either thou we live in different parts of the world. However the best thing I feel about blogging is the wonderful friendships which can be formed. Friendships which can last a life time.
Cheers,
AA :)
Dear AA,
DeleteThank you for congratulating us! We did have a great 12/12/12. Wearing a mustache was a laugh a minute!
I hope you comment again,
Peter & Nate
Dear Mrs. Y⚐llis,
ReplyDeleteThe mustaches were all unique! Do you know what unique means? My favorite mustache was a fat orange and black handlebar mustache.
12:12 was amazing! It would be fantastic if there was a second hand. Then it would be 12:12:12. Good thing the date was 12/12/12.
I was not in the virtual room, but I am glad to hear that our class won. We work very hard to write quality comments. :-)
Dear Mr. Mannell,
You were a wonderful blogger! I bet you were a grand teacher. :-D
Were you in the virtual room? I was not because you needed to download an app and my mom did not have it. :-(
Warmly,
Heather
Dear Mrs Yollis and class,
ReplyDeleteCongratulations on your achievements in the Edublog Awards! Everyone in 4KM and 4KJ was excited to see your name.
Thank you for congratulating me and our class. We were all thrilled with the results.
The Awards Ceremony was actually on 13/12/12 for us of course. Did you know in Australia we write DD/MM/YY and in the US you write MM/DD/YY? Sometimes it can get a little confusing!
Your blogging buddy,
Mrs Morris
Dear Mrs. Yollis and Class,
ReplyDeleteCongratulations once again for your recognition as best classroom blog around the globe! Your blog is an inspiration to so many. Thank you for all you do and all you share with others.
Kind regards,
Mrs. Watanabe
Congratulations on winning Best Class Blog. That is very exciting.
ReplyDeleteThe work you all are doing is beyond the everyday experience of second and third grade and you are all so lucky.
As you enjoy the process of blogging, you are learning reading, writing and modern communication and tech skills that will keep you well informed for years to come. I'm so happy that Grace gets to be part of it all.
Dear Mrs. Yollis,
ReplyDeleteCongratulations for winning the best blog. I like the photos on 365 and I like to comments on them. Maybe I will have my own blog when I am older just like my sisters.
Sincerely,
Hannah
Dear Mrs. Yollis,
ReplyDeleteWhat a grand photo!
The Big Bushy Mustache, was a great story. In fact, I want to read it again.
The Big Bushy Mustache is about a boy named Ricky, and he has a problem. He looks like his mother and he doesn't want to look like his mother. So at school he can wear a mustache in a play. His teacher tells the class to put their costumes in their desks. But Ricky takes his mustache home, and he loses it.
This story teaches Ricky or anybody to listen to an adult, especially your teacher.
Do you like the lesson in The Big Bushy Mustache?
Sincerely,
Chl♣e
