Today we met some new friends from the Peach State, Georgia!

It was very exciting because there was a bit of a mix-up at the beginning of the call. Mrs. Hight thought the classes were doing a
Mystery Skype and Mrs. Yollis' class thought they were doing a Share &
Compare. These two classes quickly adapted and the call was a super success!
Since Mrs. Yollis’ class already knew that their new friends were
from Georgia, they couldn’t do a mystery call. However, the Georgians did conduct a
Mystery Skype. They asked Mrs. Yollis' class questions and the Californians could
only answer
Yes or No!
The students got out their atlases to help them answer the questions correctly.
The Georgians asked:
Are we a coastal or gulf city? Yes.
Are we a northeastern state? No
Were you one of the original 13 colonies? No.
Are you a state in the Central Time Zone? No.
Do you border Canada? No.
Are you in the Pacific Standard Time zone? Yes
Is your state California? YES!
Next, it was time for a fun Share & Compare session!

Kelly and Acacia were terrific greeters and leaders! They took charge of the Skype call and kept everything moving! Great leadership, girls!

All in all, the time spent with the new friends was peachy!
(Get it, they're the Peach State.)
Here is what some students had to say about what they'd learned:
Alyssa: They speak with a southern accent and use greetings like “Hey, y’all!”
Jake: A goober is a peanut! Georgia has lots of peanut plantation in
southern Georgia.
Acacia: They raft the Chattahoochee River which is nearby their capital city, Atlanta.
Royce: Their capital is Atlanta, and the capitol building has a dome
just like our capitol building in Sacramento.
Sarah: Their school had 1, 852 students! Ours is only is only 584.
Kelly: Our school is K-5th grade and their school is pre-First-12th!
Brenden: Atlanta is the biggest city in Georgia. 420,000 Georgians live there.
Ellie: They “shoot the Hooch” on weekends. That means they ride the
river on a raft.
Sammy: January 2, 1788, Georgia became the 4th state to join the
Union. We are the 31st state.
Sasha: Their state insect is the honey bee.
Matthew: Their school mascot is the wild cat. Ours is a cub. (Beverly
and Panda are our blog mascots.)
Leila: They are nicknamed the Goober State, the Empire of the South,
and the Peach State.
Trey: The live oak is the state tree. Ours is the California redwood.

ReplyDeleteI love how you guys all added Skyping into your blog. When I was in your class 3 years ago we did not Skype. It was very interesting and I hope to see more.

ReplyDeleteIt's great how you were able to adapt to make the skype call a great success! Flexibility is such a great characteristic to have because you never know when things won't work out perfectly.
When I first started teaching I actually taught down in Georgia. I lived there for two years. I loved all the fresh peaches, the peanuts, and the warm weather. Now that I live in Massachusetts, we get a lot of snow. We never got any of that in Georgia.

ReplyDeleteMy name is Ashley Howard. I an EDM310 student at the University of South Alabama. I really enjoyed reading this blog post! The student's really seem to love being able to Skype other students from different states. When I was reading what some students had to say about what they learned, Ellie's comment "They “shoot the Hooch” on weekends. That means they ride the river on a raft.", brought back some memories for me. A few summers ago I went on a trip to Georgia and me and my family got to "shoot the hooch". Keep up the good work! :)

ReplyDeleteI enjoyed you posting about all the things you learned about the state of Georgia. I think that it is always neat to connect with other people, even when they are miles away from you. I am a student at the University of South Alabama and am taking a class called EDM 310. I live in lower Alabama which is often referred to as "LA", but not to be confused with the LA from your home state:) Georgia is a very special place to me for several different reasons. Georgia is important to me because my older sister lives there, it is also important to me because it is where my fiance proposed to me. My fiance, Michael popped the big question center court at an Atlanta Hawks game last year! Atlanta is one of my favorite places to visit, there are so many things to do and I have such fond memories of it! Keep up the great work Mrs. Yollis' class!
