Happy Dia de los Muertos (Day of the Dead)

We have been learning about the Mexican tradition called Dia de los Muertos, or Day of the Dead. It is a time of celebration and to honor the friends and family members who we have lost.

First, we watched a BrainPop video to learn about Mexico and this special Mexican holiday.

Next, we created beautiful calaveras to decorate our room. A big thank you to Will's mom for preparing the art project and teaching us about this special holiday.

Behold! A few arrays of calaveras!

What did you learn about this special Mexican tradition?

How many calaveras did we make? Use multiplication!

Did you honor anyone special with your artwork?

November is Family Blogging Month

Mrs. Yollis and her students  to share what they are learning and experiencing. In an effort to include more family members in our online community, we are proclaiming:

November is Family Blogging Month!

Each student made a list of their family members.

After looking through the archive of our class blog and our Yollis 365 blog, students selected specific posts tailored to the interest of a particular relative. Selecting a good post for mom and dad, another for grandma.

A dog post is a great one for siblings!

We're inviting everyone to comment: moms, dads, brothers, sisters, grandmothers, grandfathers, uncles, aunts, and cousins.
We welcome friends, too!

Students will be inviting their family and friends to participate in a conversation!
Maybe we'll get some 2-point comments

(We frequently evaluate the comments that our blog has received. In order to earn the 2-points, a comment must be error-free and add something to the post.   Many of Mrs. Yollis' third graders have already met the challenge!)

If you don't know what to say, here is a video made by Mrs. Yollis' third graders.

Learn FIVE tips for writing a quality comment!

If you don't know How to leave a comment, here is a video tutorial about HOW to leave a comment on our blog.

Here is the key we will use for  Family Blogging Month.

What do you think of our idea?

Who are you inviting to be a part of our online community?

Halloween Halloween :: Greenscreen Fun!

Today was Halloween and our school held "Dress Like Your Favorite Book Character" Day! It was fun way to meet some new characters!

In the morning, students took turns taking a photo of their book and then posing like the character. Using our iPads and the Do Ink app we were able to quickly make some outstanding images!

Paid app (I am not being paid to endorse this product.)

Behold! Meet our favorite book characters!

At the end of the day,  the parents put on a fabulous Halloween party! Templeton was there! Ha!

Charades and other fun games were played!

It was a spooktacular party!

What do you think of our green screen images?

Leave a comment as if you are that character still! Strike up a conversation with a book character! (Do not use real names.)

What new book will you be reading?

Learning About Lunches :: Global Project

Mrs. Yollis' students love connecting with other classrooms. Recently, we learned about a lunch project from Wellington, New Zealand. We learned about it from Twitter.

Students were asked about their lunches! Here is the slideshow from Ms. Stevenson and her students from New Zealand.

In an effort to be more green, we followed the lead of our new New Zealand Buddies and took a close look at the packaging in our lunches. Some lunches are packed in reusable containers, some leave rubbish behind, and some items can be composted.

This lunch was a great example for us all. Only one piece of trash!

Some lunches had variety but produced a lot of trash. Wrappers, plastic packaging, and ziplock bags are all rubbish. Students are going to look for ways to reduce the waste. Perhaps more reusable containers?

Here is the data about our lunch packaging. What do you notice about the data?

Today was pizza day at school! Everyone loves this special day and there is a long line, but big smiles.

Healthy salads are a part of pizza day, too!

Students grab the fresh fruit or vegetable options. Many students pay cash or type in their pin number to a prepaid account.

Our school has started a composting project. Here Mr. Jim showed us around Compostville!

How would you evaluate your lunch? Do you produce a lot of trash?

What are some ways you have reduced your waste?

Please add your lunch information to the slideshow!

What did you learn about composting during your visit to Compostville?
