Join World Maths Day!

March 1, 2011 is World Maths Day!

It is a fantastic Internet project for students.
Mrs. Yollis' class participated last year and really enjoyed the experience!

All students were given a Username and Password today, so they can start preparing for March 1.

Good luck!
Let us know which countries you have played against!

  1. Dear Mrs. Yollis' class,

My name is Lindylou, and I just played against Guatemala, the United Kingdom, and another student from the United States.

It was fun playing against people from all around the world, and I think I came in first this time! I am going to look for a different level.

    Who did you compete against?

  3. Dear Mrs.Yollis,
    World Maths Day is amazing!
I played against three people from the United Kingdom! I came in last:-(. That just means that I have to practice some more( No big deal). It should be fun.
Has anybody been against three (or more) people that live in the same place?

  4. @ AA,

I would have loved have this type of interactive maths event too! I like the geography component as well!

    @ Ileanna***

I love your comment! You have every proper noun capitalized and spelled correctly! Way to go! I also like your attitude of not giving up!

Finally, I like how you ended with a relevant question.

You are becoming a fantastic writer, Ileanna!

  5. Dear Mrs. Yollis,

World Maths Day is very fun! I was very surprised at the high scores on the hall of fame list! Maybe one of us will be able to get on that list too!

Today, I played against a computer from Australia, but over that past few days I have played against Guatemala, the United Kingdom, China, and students from the United States.

    Your student,
    Hannah

  6. Hi Mrs Yollis
I just signed up for World Maths Day. I am not sure of the rules and things yet so I will need to have a wee visit to the site and read up a bit more before attempting to explain this to my class. I will let you know how we get on.

I would also like to let you know that Abby's hen has been named. We had 205 votes and the children were very pleased with this.

The name which was most popular was Bonkers. (A fun name for a hen).

Thanks for showing interest in this and suggesting such an excellent name too.

  7. Dear Mrs. Yollis' Class,

I am excited to try World Math Day, but I wonder if it might be a little hard. I'm glad it's in March because that is when my birthday is (Gus).

I think this is a really good post because it explains World Math Day to other people. Maybe I will get to play against someone in your class. That would be awesome!

    Madison, Gus, and Autumn

  10. Dear Mrs. Yollis,

I'm very excited about World Math Day. I'm nervous because we watched Mr. Salsich this morning and there was a really good person who went like a rocket. I am very good at math but I am still nervous!

I think it is cool to play math games with people that could live all the way across the world. I can't imagine anyone thinking up this stuff.

  12. Dear Mrs Yollis'

I love this post! I think its a great way to spread the word about World Math Day. I love doing math in school. Right now, we're learning division. I'm really starting to get good at it.

I wish we could have World Math Day more often.I think it's cool to be able to connect with other people around the world and race to see who can answer all the problems first.

    I hope everyone does well!

    Yours truly,
    Amanda in Mr. Salsichs class

  17. @ Miss Docherty/Brillian Bloggers,

Thanks so much for your fine, fine comment. We think you will like World Maths Day if you try it.

I'm glad to hear that the hen got a name. Although I liked my suggestion, Scarlett O'HENry, we must go with the majority! Bonkers sounds like a good name too.

You are our first connection with Scotland! Is the land in Scotland flat or mountainous? We don't know much about your country.

    Sincerely,
    Miriam, Aaron, and Amitai

    @ Madison, Gus, and Autumn,

First of all, Happy Birthday in March to Gus!

Thanks so much for a super comment! Alexa noticed that one of your sentences was a compound sentence! (2 sentences with a comma and a conjunction).

We were in the lab when you were...so maybe we played together!

  19. @ Amanda,

Thank you for your time and admiration!

We also like that it is a great way to learn math! We have already mastered division and multiplication.

We think you can do World Maths Day after the day it ends, which this year is March 1st. We figured that out by going on after the date, and it worked. Boy, were we surprised!

    Sincerely,
    Iman and Misha

    @ Tommy :D and Sam C.,

We are glad that you are SUPER excited! We are thrilled too!

We were in the computer lab here in California at about the same time you were in Connecticut. It's possible that we played against you, but most likely we did not.

There is also a World Spelling Day. Do you think you might join that too? We think you use the same password, but we're not sure.

    Alexa, Aaron, Miriam, and Amitai

  21. @ Hope,

The first day you do World Maths Day it is hard because it is your first time which usually is your worst. Then the second, you get better, but by the third you're a math champ!

In World Maths Day you get timed for 60 seconds (1 minute) which is just the right amount of time for third grade!

    Sincerely,
    Iman and Misha

  22. @ Emmett and Maggie,

    Misha: China and United Kingdom
    Iman: Guatemala and China
    Alexa: United Kingdom and Canada
    Aaron: Borneo
    Miriam: United Kingdom and Iceland
    Amitai: Australia

  23. @Alison,

This is Hannah and Adia from Mrs. Yollis' class. Thank you for your brilliant comment! You are an amazing commenter!

Once you get the hang of World Maths Day, you will be as quick as a rocket.

We love World Maths Day because first of all, if you click on your avatar, you can create and change it. Our avatars were another gender, then we changed it.

Second of all, once you do World Maths Day a bunch of times, you are a professional.

Both of us have done World Spelling Day before, we are really good. Here's a trick:

If the volume on your laptop or computer is loud, you get to hear the person that is recorded, say the answer to the sentence, and then you spell it.

Maybe you can try it sometime, and show Mr. Salsich, too!

    Happy Blogging!

Your blogging buddies from Los Angeles,

    Hannah and Adia

Why do you like this post?

  25. Dear Mrs. Yollis,

It was a wonderful experience having World Math(s) Day. I adore the excitement in World Math Day, but I wish it would last longer. I love this educational site, so I play about 6 rounds every day. I was surprised at the people I got from around the world. It was rare when I got Cayman Islands. I even once played someone from Mexico, and they had a sombrero on their head! I also played against Hong Kong, China, Mali,Canada, and Japan. Did you get anyone with interesting or traditional clothing?

    From,
    Ryan

@ Miss Docherty and the Brilliant Bloggers,

Thank you for your thoughtful comment. When you enter your account in World Math Day, in the up-right hand corner, there is a word that says "Rules".
If you click on it, it will give you the rules. It must be exciting that Abby's hen has been named. I think Bonkers is an excellent name, and I would have voted for it. My favorite person I competed against was a person from Hong Kong because the name reminds me of King Kong! Have you seen a country that is really good in math? I have noticed that New Zealand seems a little quick.

    From,
    Ryan
