Skyping With Our Friends Down Under!

Mrs. Yollis' class is friends with Miss McGeady (soon to be Mrs. Morris), Miss Jordan, and their classes in Victoria Australia. We had a fun time connecting yesterday via Skype!

Mrs. Yollis' class understands about time zones, but it was still hard to  comprehend that when it was
2:00 P.M. on Monday in Los Angeles, it was  at 9:00 A.M. on Tuesday in Victoria!

Funny!

Miss Jordan and Miss McGeady greeted the class!

Students were excited to see and learn about the Australian community!

Students shared information about their community. The information was collected on a class poster.

Mrs. Ranney and her class were able to join in the fun!

Adia and Grace were able to record the information as it came in. This was the first time we tried Todaysmeet.

We noticed some similarities and differences!

Similarities:

Our summer and winter climate is very much the same.

We both live close to the beach.

We both are located in the 30˚ latitudes. (We're 34˚ and they are 38˚)

Differences

We are a half hour drive from the beach, and they are 15 minutes.

Their school year ENDS in three weeks! Ours ends in June!

We have 600 students in our school and they have 700.

They are in the southern hemisphere, and we are in the northern hemisphere.

✵     ✵     ✵     ✵

Here is a transcript from Grace and Adia.  Thanks, Iman, for being our photographer!

How is the transcript useful? Are there any facts that don't make sense?

What was your favorite part about the connection?

  4. Dear Mrs. Yollis' Class,

How cool that you got to Skype with 2KM and 2KJ! Hmm, since they were talking to you from the next day, does that mean they were in the future?... Time zones can be pretty funny.

Wow! You really have a lot of similarities for living on opposite sides of the world. And how lucky we all are to live so close to the beach (I live about 15 minutes from the Atlantic Ocean).

It was fun to read over the transcript from Todaysmeet. Adia and Grace did a fantastic job! I wonder, was it difficult to use?

I look forward to the first time we get to Skype with you all!

    Your friend,
    Mr. Salsich

  8. Dear Mrs Yollis' class,

I just loved skyping with you all yesterday! It made my last day at school before my wedding, very special.

It was so much fun to talk about how our communities are similiar and different.

I was interested to hear that you call food you take away from a restaurant take out whereas we call it take away.

Everyone was interested to hear that you sometimes see celebrities in LA!

@ Grace and Adia, thank you so much for the wonderful transcript. You are clever girls!

@ Mr Salsich, I wish 2KM and 2KJ could skype with your class sometime. Unfortunately, I don't think our time zones will allow that!

    Your friend,
    Miss McGeady (nearly Mrs Morris)

    @ Mr. Salsich,

Yes, they are way ahead of us! I mean...it was already Tuesday...and now, here it is Tuesday...and they are already enjoying Wednesday! At this rate, we'll never catch up!

I liked the TodaysMeet site! We'll have to try it when we get together. Hey, you're ahead of us too! :-)

    @ Ben,

I'm looking forward to more Skype fun too!

    @ Hannah★,

What did you find in the transcript that you didn't remember? You might want to be one of the reporters, yes?

    @ Bianca, (from 2KM)

We had a ball with you too! I would love to Skype anytime! Was it easy to see and hear us? Do you have any questions that we didn't answer?

    Your friend,

  13. Dear Mrs. Yollis,

I did not remember that 6% of the people who live in Leopold speak different languages. I also didn't remember that birds dive bomb there, honestly I don't even know what that means!

To answer your other question, yes I would like to be one of the reporters!

    Your student,

  15. Dear Mrs. Yollis,

This is Adia's grandparents. We are from Iran.

We especially liked how your class and you were skyping with Australia.

It is spectacular that you teach your students about technology. How amazing!

Thank you for teaching your class such inspiring different things.

    You rock!

  16. @ Mrs Yollis,
    Thank you for the reply.
Skyping was awesome with you and your students also Mrs Ranney.
I like the fact of looking at the person I am talking too.
Yes it was easy to see and hear you.

I have got a question for you or your students.

How many national parks are there in California?

    From Bianca BB.

  17. Dear Mrs. Yollis,

Since we live so close to the Pacific ocean, my family and I go there all the time. We like to bike ride along the path near the beach. In the summer time, we swim and play in the sand. Two years ago, my family and I went to Costa Rica. One side of Costa Rica is on the Caribbean Sea which is part of the Atlantic Ocean.

I like to Skype and at home we Skype with my aunt and uncle and my grandparents even though they live in the same city as I do. Skyping allows me to see and hear them. When my grandparents go to visit far away places, they Skype and tell me about their trip.

I am really glad that we had an opportunity to Skype with 2KM, 2KJ and Mr Salsich's class. It was nice to see what everyone looks like.

    From,
    Miri★m
