What Are Text Features?

Mrs. Yollis' class is learning about informational text

Informational text, or nonfiction writing, is based on facts, real events, and real people. There are many helpful text features found in nonfiction writing. Some common text features are:  headings, subheadings, captions, diagrams, time lines, maps, charts, and the glossary.

Below is a humdinger of a video made by Sheriff Yollis and Sheriff Salsich. They hope their video helps you greenhorns learn about about these important reading features!

Yee-haw!

Here it is on Vimeo if YouTube is blocked.

What are your favorite text features?

(Headings, subheadings, captions, diagrams, time lines, maps, charts, and the glossary.)

In class, we are writing informational text. What two text features are you using in your informational text and WHY?

What text feature is not necessary in your information text?

  1. Dear Mrs. Yollis,

My favorite text feature is the subheading.
I like subheadings because they describe what the paragraph is all about. In my nonfiction magazine, they used subheadings to tell more about the animal. Subheadings describe more than a regular heading or title.

I’m doing my informational text on laptops. I’m going to use the glossary, and I will bold words like company. Bill Gates, or Steve Jobs. I will definitely use headings. I will diagram a laptop, and my favorite one of all… subheadings.

Does anyone like subheadings out there? If you're not a fan of subheadings then what’s your favorite text feature?

    Sincerely,
    Dylan B.

  2. Dear Mrs. Yollis,

    Text Features!

My favorite text feature is the subheading .
I like subheadings because they describe the paragraph that you’re reading. I think subheadings are very helpful.

My nonfiction piece is about how to play flag football. I am bolding words like flag, football, and cleats. I chose these words because they are essential to what you need to play. I am also using a lot of subheadings in my chapters. The subheadings I am thinking about are: Penalties, Finger Position, Diamond Fingers, and Footwork.
I use them to make sure that the reader knows what he/she is reading.

What is YOUR favorite text feature and why?

  3. Dear Mrs. Yollis and class,

My favorite text features are timelines and the glossary. I like the timelines because if you are done with the book you are reading, and you still want to learn more about your topic there might be a timeline in the back of the book. I like the index because if there is a word that you do not know what it means you can look in the glossary.

In my informational text I am writing about Laura Ingalls Wilder, and I am going to use a timeline because I'm writing about a real person so I can use a timeline. I also might use a map to show where Laura traveled.

What are you writing about? What text features are you using? Are you using a timeline also?

  4. Dear Mrs. Yollis and Class,

First of all, my favorite text feature is a diagram . I love a diagram because it always helps me understand what that object or animal is. In my opinion, I think diagrams are fun to draw. I love diagrams !

I’m writing about Israel, and the text features I’m going to use are maps and diagrams . I will be using maps because it is a place that you can find on a map and visit. With a map, everyone will be able to see what borders Israel. The reason why I will be using a diagram is because if I look closely at one city or one landmark, I can diagram it or it will just be a plain picture.

Have you been to Israel? What is your favorite text feature ?

    From,
    Payden

  5. @ Mrs. Yollis and class,

My favorite text feature is glossary because I like knowing what words mean.
I think they are very helpful because if you don’t understand what a word means,
you can look back at the mini glossary and find out. I also like that they are
in the non-fiction book you’re reading so you don’t have to look in a big dictionary.

My non-fiction piece is about dance ,and I will use the glossary for specific moves or dances.
I will also use subheadings to explain how you do the moves and different dances.

What are your favorite text features and why?

    Your friend,
    Reese

  6. Dear Mrs.Yollis and class,

My favorite informational text features is a diagram because I am going to be drawing a step by step to teach people how to pose in my informational texts.I am also going to do a glossary as well because I am going to have a lot of words bolded. I will not you a timeline because my text that I am writing about did not happen on a certain time.

I am writing about how to do a front walkover, so I will be talking about stretches and safety. They are the most important.

What is your favorite text features, and what are you writing about?

    Love,
    Ariana

  7. @ Mrs. Yollis,

My favorite text feature is the captions. I like captions because you can see what things are. For example, if you want to know if those are ears on a dog you should look for captions!

I think that lots of people like or should like captions. Can you think of any photos that you can put captions on? You can put captions on anything. I would love to know what one of your favorite things are and then you could put captions on it.

I am writing about dog. The text feature that I am not using is maps. I am not using maps because it has no purpose with my topic.

Captions are great! I love learning and writing captions.

    Do you like captions captions?

    Sincerely,
    ♥Allie

  8. Dear Mrs. Yollis,

One of my favorite text features is the glossary. I like it because it tells you the definition
of a word if you don't know the definition. I like titles because they tell you what you are going to read about.

I am writing my informational text on dogs. In the glossary, I will put words like jaw, snout, and coat. One text feature that I’m not going to use is the map. I am not going to use the map because there is no purpose to use a map for a dog.

What is your favorite text feature and why?

  9. Dear Mrs. Yollis,

Text features are amazing because you can use them in stories, books, and more!
My favorite text feature is a diagram because you can draw a picture and explain what it is. You can also learn from diagramming because it helps you see where everything is. For example, if there is a book about a farm and you have a diagram, it will show you where all of the areas of the farm are.

I also think that the glossary is a very helpful text feature. If a person doesn’t understand a word, they can use the glossary to help understand the meaning.
My least favorite text feature is map so I don't use it in my writing because my writing is about
    cupcakes.

    Love,
    Cora

  10. Dear Mrs.Yollis,

My favorite text feature is the index. I like the index because it helps you find the page quickly that you are looking for. I used a map and a table of contents in my informational text. I did not use the index, diagram, timeline, or glossary. I did not use the index because that would take too long to read. I also did not use the timeline because the map would be easier and faster. Also, I did not use the diagram because making the arrows would be too complicated, and I didn’t have that much time. Finally, I did not use the glossary because writing the definition and the the page numbers would be too time-consuming.

    Warmly,
    Preston
