BreakOut EDU!

Mrs. Garcia came to our room today with a fabulous game!
It was called BreakOut EDU

First, Mrs. Yollis put us into eight teams, one for each letter in the word TEAMWORK. Then Mrs. Garcia explained the rules. We would have 45 minutes to solve eight problems. A correct answer would lead to a number or word that unlocked a lock. Two hints were permitted

Would we be able to unlock them all?

TEAMWORK was important!
If you finished your task and unlocked one lock, you were free to go and help other teams.

Everyone was intrigued with the locks.

With 45 minutes on the clock, we began our challenge!

Some students worked with Morse code.

Others constructed a time line.

These two are discussing a math task to solve a mystery.

Hundreds charts and logical reasoning were used repeatedly.

Sometimes the locks opened. Other times they did not.
If the code didn't open the lock, we had to try something new.

One by one we began our escape!

Here we are at the halfway mark! Four unlocked.

With over nine minutes to spare, we unlocked the box! This was our second attempt to break out, and we used teamwork and perseverance to succeed

We loved this type of collaborative learning!  A tip of the hat to Jeanine Huebner for the BreakOut EDU tasks!

Without revealing too many clues, what was difficult about your task?

What did you learn about yourself from this experience?

    Dear Mrs. Yollis and Class,

This looks like such a fun, challenging and educational lesson!

Congratulations to the whole class for working together to succeed in the task of unlocking the box. I am very curious... was there anything in the box once you got it unlocked?

    Sincerely,
    April (Dylan B's mom)

  3. Dear Mrs.Yollis,

I loved the breakout EDU! I thought it was really fun and would love to do it again soon.

The hard part for me was when we didn't have the paper but when we got the paper it was much easier.

Most of all I thought the teamwork was a lot better than the last time we did it.

    Warmly,
    Ariana

  4. Dear Mrs. Yollis,
I had fun doing Breakout EDU. The hardest part was working as a team to figure out the clues. I learned that we could solve the problems before the time ran out and that we could go on to help others. It was fun helping others to solve their puzzles.

  6. Dear Mrs. Yollis,

I liked Breakout EDU! I liked it because you split us into groups to figure out different topic questions. Breakout EDU is sort of like my baseball games. My team and I have to try to score runs to win the game, just like unlocking locks. Baseball feels challenging, and you have to feel confident and have perseverance to try to win.

I love how you said Unlocking the Locks is like your baseball games. I think it's great too. I think Breakout EDU and Unlocking the Locks are similar. They both have locks and a box. I wanted to compliment you on your vocabulary, using words like perseverance and challenging.

  7. Dear Mrs. Yollis and Class,

I sure enjoyed seeing these step-by-step descriptions (in chronological order) of how you approached the task and how you unlocked the box!

Here are the steps I took to approach the task of leaving you a comment. First, I read this blog post with Nolan and looked at every photo. Second, I decided to leave a comment. Third, I proofread my comment. Now I am going to publish it.

It would be funny if one day parents had a Breakout EDU task! I wonder if we would be as successful as you were.

    Sincerely,
    Lisa (Nolan's Mom)

  8. Dear Mrs. Yollis,

I liked the Breakout EDU. I liked working together in groups. My assignment was to put together a timeline. The timeline has sports that go on another paper that is a timeline. You have to put the sports in order. The hardest thing for me was putting the sports in order. It was confusing for a little bit.

I saw a lot of interesting challenges that I would want to try. Would you want to try the timeline? The timeline is really fun if you want to try it.

Do you like the Breakout EDU? Did you like your challenge?

    Allie

    2. @ Kimber,

You would have loved Breakout EDU!

It is really fun! Elie is right, whenever we mention your name it reminds us of you. I miss you, and I wish you where here right now.

I heard you are learning rounding at your new school. Is it fun? Are you enjoying your new school?

The timeline was a little complicated. The timeline had sports on it. The sports are timed in when they came first.

      Does your school do Breakout?

      Cheers,
      Allie

  9. Dear Mrs. Yollis and Class,

I loved seeing the photos of all of you working as a team on the different challenges to figure out the codes to unlock the box.

What did you all think was in the box before you unlocked it? Did anybody guess it would be sign about teamwork?

  10. @ Mrs. Yollis,

    This is a GREAT blog!
Those are great pictures to represent the BreakOut EDU
concept. Its Brilliant! I definitely recommend Edublog's BreakOut EDU! The locks, the envelops, even the teamwork was a blast!

BreakOut EDU reminds me of a restaurant. A team of chefs, waitresses, and busboys use teamwork to get through a night.
Even though running a restaurant is a lot harder than BreakOut EDU, its still the same idea.

I'd like to tip my hat to Mrs. Garcia for being a wonderful instructor for this project. She really helped us and was a great person to be around.

What did you like about BreakOut EDU?

    Best,
    Elie

    2. @ Kimber,

Hello! How are you doing? Welcome back to the blog!

Boy, do I have things to tell you. First of all, we all miss you so, so much! The class is not the same without you. Every time we mention your name, we always think about you.

I always wanted to know, how is your new house? It must feel weird. I know how it feels because I recently moved too. It feels kind of bittersweet. You are really excited about your new room, but at the same time you miss your old room.

Also, how is your new school? Moving houses might be hard, but moving SCHOOLS? Moving schools is one of the hardest things to do. But, the benefit is you meet new people, you meet a new teacher and still have common core... Yeah.

To conclude this comment, it was great hearing from you! Stay on the blog with us!

      Cheers,
      Elie

Yes. I was Allie's partner and I very much enjoyed making a timeline. We got to find out when the historical things like the first Super Bowl happened!

    1. @ Dad,

I don't think the parent's are going to do the Breakout EDU, but they might. Breakout EDU is really cool. Maybe we could do it at home. You should try it. It might be more complicated than what it was like for us.

Does your work sound like BreakOut EDU?

      Love,

  12. Dear Mrs. Yollis,

The hard part about the breakout EDU was that we had to work together and that it something I"m not used to doing.

We had to read what was inside of the letter "O" envelope so that we could add up the numbers in the silver column. After adding up the column we had to put the numbers in the lock to see if we could get it to unlock. We unlocked the box and then Jeannine told our group that one group would need a black light, and we had the black flash light. Then we found a group that needed the black light.

After that we helped other groups so that they would be able to unlock one of the locks. As more groups were able to unlock the locks we were able to BREAKOUT!

    I was so happy.

    Your loving student,

    Lola

  13. Dear Mrs. Yollis and class,

I loved BreakOut EDU. Even though it was hard and time consuming, I had to do math to solve the problems and I enjoyed doing them. I love how well we did working as a team and it was a great class effort.

It was amazing when we broke out! It felt so good! Last time we did it we didn't break out and this time we did!

What did you enjoy doing? Have you done break out EDU?

  14. @ Mrs. Yollis,

The Breakout EDU wasn't very hard for me, but it
was fun. Maybe because Rose and I got an easy one. We got the letter k, and cracked the Morse Code. The lock we unlocked was the north, south, east, and west. The lock reminded me of the compass rose that we made.

What did you like about the Breakout EDU?
