Happy Fourth of July!

This post was first published on July 4, 2010.

July 4th is Independence Day in America!

On July 4, 1776, the Declaration of Independence was adopted by the Continental Congress in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. This document announced America's independence from Britain.

Five years ago I was with my family on the Fourth of July, and we had a special event planned for the day.

My family had three old, tattered flags that needed to be retired. So on July 4th, we had a retirement ceremony.

The United States Flag Code states: "The Flag, when it is in such condition that it is no longer a fitting emblem of display, should be destroyed in a dignified way, preferably by burning."

First, we sang some patriotic songs!

Then, my cousin Jon gave a short speech. Finally, we retired the old flags to the fire.

    1. @ Troy and Lisa,

Thank you so much for you summer comment! It is so good to continue learning and keeping the writing skills strong. I applaud you! :-)

I'm glad you enjoyed my videos. I have watched them a couple of times myself. We fly the flag all summer long at our family lake cottage. The weather is very hard on the cotton flags, so we had several flags that needed to be retired. The Fourth of July seemed the perfect day for this patriotic activity.

Have a very happy Independence Day!

  2. Dear Mrs. Yollis,

I enjoyed the video of your family singing "Grand Ole Flag".

On the Fourth of July we had a barbecue with our family and friends. I went swimming with my friends in our pool. When it got dark we walked down the street to watch the fireworks from the high school. The fireworks were awesome! My friends and I waved American flags.

    Did you see any fireworks?

Thank you so much for your fabulous comment!

This patriotic post was made about five years ago, but I run it every year because I love it so much. (Hey, that was a compound sentence!) I especially enjoy hearing my cousin's speech and my mother playing the piano.

Did you sing any songs on the Fourth of July?

  4. Dear Mrs Yollis,

I hope you had a great fourth of July. Your videos were amazing. I have never put a torn up flag in the fire. What I did on fourth of July was go to the tennis and swim center for their special fourth of July pool party. We played lots of games in the pool and on the deck such as basketball, hula hoop contests, jumprope contest, water balloon toss and many more. We won a ton of prizes. Then, we went home and rested for 2 hours. In the evening, we went to our grandma's house and celebrated forth of July with cousins, uncles and friends. Once it got dark, around 9:00pm, we stood on the grass in my grandma's backyard and watched the fireworks light up the sky. After the fire works, I got to sleep over at my grandma's house. This was the best day of summer so far

    1. @ Michael,

Thank you so much for your fabulous comment, and I appreciate your compliments about my videos.

It is rare to have tatter flags. Because we fly the flag every day in the summer sun, the flags don't last very many seasons. That was why we had so many to retire.

Wow! It sounds like you had a wonderful Independence Day! The water balloon toss sounds fun and refreshing. Did you do well at that contest? What was the jump rope contest? Was it who could jump the most or where there tricks involved?

I hope each summer day gets better and better!

  5. Dear Mrs. Yollis,

This is Hannah. Happy Fourth Of July! I really enjoyed watching all the videos. My favorite video was the one when you all sang You're A Grand Old Flag. On fourth of July my family and I went to my grandparents house to watch the fireworks. First, my siblings and I played games like soccer and tag. When it got dark, Miriam grabbed a blanket and put it on the grass so we can sit down and watch the fireworks. Finally, when it turned 9:00 we happily watched the fireworks shoot up into the sky. They were beautiful and very loud. Afterwards, we slept over at my grandparents house. This was the best day ever.

I hope you sang along when my mom played You're A Grand Old Flag. Do you know any patriotic songs that you can play on the piano? If so, let me know!
