Tutorial: A Multiplication Strategy

REMINDER: Edublog Award voting is open until December 15. We are nominated in THREE categories. Please consider voting!  Click here to give us your thumbs up/like.

We have been learning about multiplication.

Sometimes we encounter a large multiplication sentence and we don't know the product. We learned a strategy called:  Break the Large Array into Two Smaller Arrays and Add the Products

Here is a fabulous tutorial explaining the process

for 5 x 7 = ?

Here is another tutorial. Again, it is modeling how to split a large array into two smaller arrays to get the final product.

What did you think of the multiplication strategy?

What did you think of the tutorial?

Give us a large multiplication sentence that we can practice splitting into two smaller arrays to solve.

  1. Dear Mrs.Yollis,
I remember when we finished all of our educreations today, and I remember how fun it was. I am glad that you published mine on the blog. Working with Ella, Kayla, and Arena was super fun and we should do it again with a different multiplication problem though. I love how the video turns out on here. would you make an educreation? If you do make one, what would it be about?

  2. Dear Mrs. Yollis,
I really enjoyed listening to Aryana, Kayla, and Ella talk about multiplication. This is a new concept to me. I did not learn this way but it is a really great way to teach multiplication. I hope it helps some kids so that they are not to intimidated by the big numbers. It was a great idea to do the tutorials.

  3. Dear Mrs. Yollis and class,

As we here in Australia are starting our summer vacation, I know your Christmas / New Year break in the middle of your school year is about to begin. I hope you all have a wonderful break and return refreshed for many more learning adventures.
I'm sorry my very busy second half of the year schedule hasn't left me with much blogging time but hope to become very active again when we begin 2015.

  4. Dear Mrs. Yollis and Class,
Last night was the first night of Hanukkah and my family and I celebrated by lighting the first candle on our family Hanukkiah (Hanukkah candle holder). First we lit the candles (2 for first night), then my my mom made a special dinner for us consisting of Latkes (potato pancakes). After dinner we got to decorate our special cookies my mom & I baked the night before for Hanukkah. We decorated them with blue frosting & sprinkles. Yum! We also had Hanukkah donuts.
After dinner we finally got to open a couple of our presents. It felt like forever waiting for the right time to open the presents. Tonight is round 2 of 8 nights of glorious, magical Hanukkah, the also known as "The Festival of Lights".
    Happy Holidays!
    Kayla
