How To Write a Compound Sentence!

Remember: November is Family Blogging Month!
This is the perfect post for family comments!

Mrs. Yollis' students are always trying to improve their writing skills.

*       *       *       *       *
 A compound sentence:
  1. Combines two shorter sentences (so has TWO subjects)
  2. Joins the two sentences with  a conjunction (and, or, but, so)
  3. The comma goes BEFORE the conjunction.
*       *       *       *       *
Here are some sample compound sentences, and they are all about Thanksgiving!
(Hey, that's a compound sentence!)

Thanksgiving is celebrated on the fourth Thursday in November, and many families gather for a traditional feast.

In 1620, the Pilgrims landed in Plymouth, Massachusetts, but they had really planned a trip to Virginia.

The Massachusetts winter was extremely cold and  harsh, so everyone had to work together to survive.

The Wampanoag Indians helped the struggling Pilgrims, so they were able to harvest crops for their first feast.

Modern Americans dine on turkey and stuffing at home, or they make a reservation at a local restaurant.

For Homework!

In the comment section, tell about your plans for Thanksgiving. Be sure to include at least two COMPOUND SENTENCES.

Research Thanksgiving. Add new relevant information about this American holiday.

  1. Hi Mrs.Yollis,
I love to blog on your posts, and here is a post! What I am going to do for Thanksgiving is my family is hosting Thanksgiving dinner. It is fun hosting Thanksgiving dinner because I get to help make the food, and I sometimes help dress the turkey. I also help bake the desserts. Yum! Do you ever host Thanksgiving dinner? I don't eat the turkey but sometimes I do. I've always hosted Thanksgiving dinner at my house , and I love having everyone over.

      Dear Ethan,

You are right! Thanksgiving is great time to be thankful for all of the wonderful things in our life. I am grateful for my family and that everyone is happy and healthy. What are you grateful for?

I think I have a great family too! Although I do not have any aunts or uncles and very few cousins, I do have a brother and a sister and both of my parents. I also have 3 boys and a husband.

Who are the members in your family (don't use their names but tell me if you have siblings, etc.)?

What else are you thankful for besides family?

      Sincerely,
      Meredith

  3. Dear class,

These are two compound sentences that have to do with what I'm eating during the yummy Thanksgiving feast.

I like to eat pumpkin pie, AND pumpkin tarts with whip cream during the feast. The tarts are mini pumpkin pies with whip cream, AND they are so good!

  4. Dear class,

I can't wait for this Thanksgiving break because we have a lot of fun things to look forward to. During the break my cousins, sisters, and I are going to the "Happiest Place on Earth" - Disneyland. This has become our yearly tradition around the holidays. My favorite rides are "Space Mountain" and "Splash Mountain", AND my favorite Disney character are "Minnie Mouse" and
"Daisy." That will be the highlight of my week, although I am also looking forward to Thanksgiving Day.

On Thanksgiving, we gather around with my family and extended family to give thanks and eat lots of food especially turkey, corn bread and stuffing. I can taste everything already. What are some of your family traditions during the holidays?

    Sincerely,
    Kayla :]

  5. Dear Mrs. Yollis,

Thanksgiving is my favorite holiday because I get to spend time with my family and friends. Every year on Thanksgiving, my mom bakes pumpkin pie and cooks yummy food. My aunt makes the turkey, mashed potatoes, and gravy.

I am so happy that Thanksgiving is around the corner!

What is your favorite food to eat that your mom makes on Thanksgiving? Do you like pumpkin pie?

I really like pumpkin bread and pumpkin cheesecake. Have you ever tried those before?

What do you do on Thanksgiving with your family and friends? Do you watch football?

I am also looking forward to Thanksgiving. My favorite food to eat is pumpkin soup. Have you ever tried that before?

  6. Dear Mrs. Yollis and class,

I learned that the pilgrims ate seals in the Brain pop video, and that Squanto helped the pilgrims survive.

Thanksgiving is one of my favorite holidays because I spend time with my family. On Thanksgiving my uncle brings pies from his restaurant, and my mom makes the turkey and the side dishes.

Does anyone stay at their house for Thanksgiving like I do?
What are you thankful for? I am thankful for food and family.

It was Governor William Bradford who arranged a harvest festival, and about 90 Native Americans attended the festival.

For Thanksgiving this year I am going to my grandma and grandpa's house, and they will be dogsitting my cousin's dog, Stella.

This Thanksgiving, I will be with my Wisconsin family at Great-Grandma's house, and we will be making a traditional Thanksgiving dinner with pumpkin pie for dessert.

After dinner we will probably play cards, or some might like to watch football.

I will miss you, but will see you soon at Christmas!

  8. Dear Mrs. Yollis and Class,

I love Thanksgiving! It's such a wonderful time of year to enjoy spending time with family.

Some years Mr. Ranney and I spend Thanksgiving in Death Valley National Park with family members, and other years we spend it at home. 2014 is a year we plan to be at home. We will enjoy having the gathering at our house, and we are especially looking forward to having our daughter Kari's boyfriend John join us. He has just moved from Florida to California and has never spent Thanksgiving in our state.

We'll have a traditional Thanksgiving meal: turkey, dressing, mashed and sweet potatoes, and Brussels sprouts. John and Kari will also bring something new, a special carrot salad that his family enjoys each Thanksgiving.

I feel very thankful for the many blessings in my life, so I feel such joy when I can share what I have with my family!

I hope each of you has a wonderful Thanksgiving with your family as well!

    Thankfully yours,
    Mrs. Ranney

      Dear Nic and Ethan,

What other foods can vegetarians eat during Thanksgiving? I go to a friends house each year to celebrate and one of the girls that goes is also a vegetarian. Her mother makes special pumpkin soup with vegetable broth instead of chicken broth and special stuffing with only vegetables.

I bet there are a lot of desserts you can eat that are vegetarian.

Do you know what teams will be playing football on Thanksgiving? Do you know what the name of the football game is that is played in San Francisco on Thanksgiving Day? (hint- it has to do with something you eat on Thanksgiving).

My research tells me that American football is one of the many traditions in American culture that is associated with Thanksgiving Day. Virtually every level of football, from amateur and high school to college and the NFL, plays football on Thanksgiving Day (Thursday) or the immediately following holiday weekend (Friday, Saturday and Sunday).

Do you know any other fun facts about Thanksgiving football?

When Thanksgiving is at your house, what do you make? In my family, we go to a friend's house and I also bring a desert. I love pumpkin so I usually try to make pumpkin bread which is very similar to the one you made in class. One of the differences is that I put chocolate chips in my pumpkin bread.

I get my cousins and relatives. My aunt's food is so delicious, and I eat everything! After we eat dinner we go outside and play football with my cousin and take a walk to help our full bellies. Then we get to come inside and eat desert. I like my mom's pumpkin pie the best because I help her back it.
