Washington, D.C. ~ Day 1

It has been an exciting first day in Washington, D.C. I am in our nation's capital because I am a BAMMY Elementary Teacher of the Year finalist. What an honor!

My students helped me plan my first day, and it was a busy one!

Washington Monument

Lincoln Memorial

Jefferson Memorial

Vietnam Veterans Memorial

Arlington National Cemetery

Tomb of the Unknown Soldier

A close up photo of the American flag against the stone obelisk. Tomorrow, I will go to the top!

Martin Luther King, Jr. Memorial

I even when on a moonlight memorial tour! Spectacular!

Because I have limited time, I am only posting photos right now.

Students, share some facts about the landmarks photographed above. I will add your comments to the post!

    Good morning Mrs. Yollis,

It is so cool seeing your pictures of the monuments - they are amazing! The students have so many questions for you. We want to wish you good luck on the Bammy Awards and no matter what, you are the winner to us! Have a great trip and we will see you on Monday.

    Sincerely,
    Mrs. Wolf and class

    1. Dear Mrs. Wolf and class,

I am so glad that you were able to see my photos! Washington, D.C. is a remarkable city with so much history! We talked a lot about the monuments and how to plan to see the most, and I think we did a great job!

My favorite monument was the Lincoln Memorial. As you can see from the photos, I saw Honest Abe during the day and on the moonlight memorial tour. He looked spectacular in the evening lighting. Who remembers some interesting facts about President Lincoln?

Thank you for the well wishes! Principal Brazell is here with me, and we will be attending the festivities on Saturday.

Mrs. Wolf told me how great you were while she was in change. I am very proud of each and every one of you!

      See you on Monday!

      Warmly,
      Mrs. Y♥llis

  2. Dear Mrs. Yollis,

These are wonderful photos! I love all the monuments.
My favorite monument is the Washington monument.
Have you been to all the monuments?
If you have, which one is your favorite monument?

    Sincerely,
    Asha

  3. Dear Mrs. Yollis,

I liked the photograph of the Jefferson Memorial. Did you know that Thomas Jefferson grew his own vegetables?

    Sincerely,
    Ethan

  5. Dear Mrs. Yollis,

Wow, those monuments sure are impressive! I love the photo of you in front of the Lincoln Memorial where you can really tell just how massive the sculpture is. Did you know that the Lincoln Memorial has served as the location for many famous speeches including Martin Luther King's "I Have a Dream" speech?

Here is a trivia question: inside the memorial there are carved inscriptions from two famous speeches given by President Lincoln. Can anyone name the two speeches?

Enjoy the rest of your trip!

    Sincerely,

    Melissa (Nic's Mom)

P.S. Did you ever make it to the top of the Washington Monument?

  6. Dear Mrs. Yollis,

I hope you're having a good trip. I am looking forward to seeing you on Monday, but I want you to have as much fun as you can. Have you visited all of the three branches of government yet? The three branches of government are the executive, legislative, and the judicial branches.

Have you ridden the subway yet? When I was there, it was really cold, so we had hot chocolate. Have you had hot chocolate there? Is it cold there? On the nighttime tour, did you see any other monuments besides the Lincoln Memorial? Did you see the Einstein statue?

I wish you good luck on the Bammy Awards, but if you don't win, you're still lucky, because there aren't that many people who even get nominated.

    Sincerely,
    Sam

  7. Dear Mrs. Yollis,

I love all the monuments. But if I could go to any one I wanted, I would choose the Lincoln Memorial because it is so big and I would like to see it in person.

Good luck with the Bammy Award. Even if you don't win you are still a great teacher.

    Sincerely,

    Nic

  8. Dear Mrs. Yollis,
It looks like you are having an amazing time! I'm thrilled you can see the Washington Monument. Last year it was surrounded by scaffolding while it was being repaired.
I wonder where you have been since this post. If you go to the Library of Congress, would you please post a photo for this librarian? It wasn't open when I visited Washington, DC.
Have a fabulous time at the Bammy Awards!
    From,
    Mrs. Hembree

  9. Dear Mrs. Yollis,

We enjoyed learning from your classes video on quality comments. We are practicing how to write quality comments by responding to your post about Washington.

Our class thinks it's really amazing that you have this opportunity to go to Washington. Most of us have never been there. We saw that you visited the Martin Luther King Jr. memorial. Recently, we read a book called Testing the Ice that is about the baseball player, Jackie Robinson. Jackie Robinson got to march with Martin Luther King Jr.
We do not know a lot about American monuments, so it is interesting to see your photos. Do you know how big the Washington monument is? We noticed it's quite high.
