A New Word Problem

Today we learned about a new kind of math problem. It was different than other word problems we've done.   Usually word problems ask questions like:

How many in all?         How many more?       How many fewer?

This was a new kind of word problem.
Panda and Hoppy left 25 comments. Hoppy left 5 more comments than Panda.
How many comments did Panda leave?
How many comments did Hoppy leave?

Here is a tutorial a student made illustrating one way to solve this type of problem.

What do you think of this process?

Here is another math problem to solve.

Frogger and Curious George left 45 comments on the blog.
Frogger left 5 more comments than Curious George.

How many comments did Frogger leave?
How many comments did Curious George leave?

The answer is:
Frogger: 25 comments
Curious George: 20 comments

  25. Hi Everybody!

I love the split the difference strategy!

Mr. Ranney and I just got back from a camping trip in Kings Canyon National Park. Here's a problem that goes with our trip:

While camping in Kings Canyon, Mr. and Mrs. Ranney saw many beautiful, tall sequoia trees. The two tallest trees had a combined height of 275 feet and a difference of 25 feet. How tall were each of the two trees?

I'm looking forward to seeing who can solve the problem!

Hope to see you all soon!

    Sincerely,
    Mrs. Ranney

      @ Mrs. Ranney,

We just solved your marvelous Split the Difference problem. Here is the answer: One tree is 125 feet and the other tree is 150 feet.

We looked at Sequoia tree online. Sequoia trees are very big! One tree, called General Sherman tree, is quite massive. This giant has grown to be 275 feet tall. In addition, it is very old. We read that it is 2,300–2,700 years old. That is a lot of birthday candles!

Here is a problem for you.
Mrs. Ranney and Mrs. Yollis were making birthday cakes. Together they made three cakes. Mrs. Ranney made one more than Mrs. Yollis made. How many cakes did Mrs. Ranney make? How many did Mrs. Yollis make?

This one was so easy, it was difficult!

Hope you are having a great birthday!

    2. @Mrs. Yollis and Class,

Nice job in solving the Sequoia mystery and doing some great research as well!

I think the answer to your problem is that Mrs. Ranney made two cakes and Mrs. Yollis made one.

There is just one question I have: What kind of cakes were they?

By the way, I am so glad to see my old friends Curious George and Frogger here in your post!

I am having a great birthday! One of the best parts was hearing your song and getting to talk to you!

      Cheers!
