  1. Welcome Ms. Newumeyer!

We are very excited to meet you in person via Skype or Google HangOut!

Everyone loved your musical choice, and your slide show was very descriptive. Chloe thought that your photo with your dance friends helped explain the text. Aashi liked the image of the thermometer showing -13˚ F. Today, we are 83˚ hotter than you!

Ben enjoyed reading your sentences, and he thought they showed a lot of detail.

We have 28 students in our class, fifteen are girls and thirteen are boys. We just got a new boy in our class, and he only speaks French! We have been using Google Translate to communicate with him.

Panda and Beverly are our two class mascots. Panda always listens in class and his favorite saying is: Actions speak louder than words. Beverly is not a good listener and can usually be found hibernating in her giant, flowered chair.

Do you have a class mascot?

How many students are in your class?

    Sincerely,
    Mrs. Y♥llis' students

    1. Dear Mrs. Yollis’s students,

Thanks for the great comment and making me feel so welcome! I’m also excited to meet you all in person via Skype or Google HangOut!

I’m glad you enjoyed my slideshow. I’m very jealous of your lovely weather- we usually only get that hot during the summer.

You sound as though you have a pretty even split between boys and girls in your classroom. At my classes at the university most of my classes have way more girls than boys. Where is your new classmate from? In Canada, French is our second languages so many people speak it (although I do not).

Panda and Beverly sound like great mascots. Are they people or animals? Unfortunately I have never had a class mascot, but they sound like lots of fun.

My university classes have about thirty people, although I have different people in each class. The class I interned in from September to December had 31 students, but they only had 5 girls and 26 boys.

      Sincerely,
      Ms. Neumeyer

    2. @ Ms. Neumeyer,

First of all, sorry about that misspelling of your name! We were excited to start connecting, and in our haste, we put the NEW in New. :-)

I was curious about the class that you interned. You said that is was a group of five girls and twenty-six boys. Were all the classes at the school that lopsided?

      Your friend,
      Mrs. Y♥llis

    3. Dear Mrs. Yollis,
Don't worry at all about the misspelling- and you are right the "new" did fit in this case!
Most of the classes weren't as lopsided as the class I interned at- it just ended being that way due to registration that year.
      All the best,
      Ms. Neumeyer

    1. Dear Jemma, Nizma, and Mia

I liked that costume too- it was very bright and sparkly! I was actually belly dancing, and that was at a performance with my troupe (group of people I dance with).

I’m glad you all like to dance! Bollywood dancing sounds like a lot of fun. It has a lot of similarities to belly dancing.

What kinds of card games do you like to play?

      Sincerely,
      Ms. Neumeyer

    Dear Ms. Newumeyer,

We are from Mrs. Yollis' class, and we would love to skype with you! We are interested in learning more about your dance group. When did you start? What is your favorite style?

Emi adores rock climbing, but she has never climbed a snow wall. She also snowboards!

Samantha enjoys rock climbing, and also likes playing card games. Chloe's, Emi's, and Samantha's favorite is Go Fish.

What is your favorite card game?

Is the wall you were climbing made out of ice?

    Sincerely,

    Chloe, Emi, and Samantha

    1. Dear Chloe, Emi, and Samantha,

I’m excited to Skype with you all as well!

I started dancing six years ago now. I have focused on belly dancing, but there are many different style of belly dancing; oriental, Egyptian, ATS, tribal fusion, and others. My favourite is tribal fusion!

I also enjoy rock climbing! Climbing the wall of ice was very hard!

I also like Go Fish but here we were playing a game called Munchkins, which is my favourite. I also enjoy the card games Sticks, Skip-Bo, Uno, and Speed.

The wall I was climbing was made out of ice! It was especially built for the winter festival. I had to use ice picks to pull myself up!

      Sincerely,
      Ms. Neumeyer

  4. Dear Ms. Neumeyer,

We are both excited to be sharing with you today.

Shayna has never been snowboarding, but she would like to. Shayna's brother has a plastic snowboard that he got from his dad on his birthday. Shayna would pretend to snowboard on a carpet. Her brother, Jack, would teach her, but she has not practiced in a few years and she is planning to get better.

Heather knows how to snowboard, and she usually snowboards at Mountain High with her brother, mom, and dad. She doesn't have a snowboard of her own. At Mountain High, you can rent a snowboard. There are different machines that are called lifts. They carry you to the top of the mountain peak. They have different specific names like an easy one is called the Coyote. The hardest mountain is called the Black Diamond. She has a blog that has a post on Mountain High. Here is a link to it:

    A Visit to Mountain High!

How many times have you been snowboarding?

    Sincerely,
    Sh♥yna and He♔ther

    1. Dear Shayna and Heather,

Thanks for reply- I’m excited to hear from you!

Shayna, snowboarding is lots of fun, and you should go if you have the chance- until then keep practicing! This picture is actually the first time I had snowboarded, and I was already sixteen! Before that I had only ever skied.

Wow! Heather I bet you are a better snowboarded then I am. I have also been on Black Diamond runs but only at Table Mountain- which is very small because it is in Saskatchewan.

I’ve been snowboarding twice, snowblading once, and skiing more times than I can remember!

      Sincerely,
      Ms. Neumeyer

    Welcome Ms. Neumeyer!

We all like your welcoming video! Darius would like to go snowboarding, but he has been skiing before. Roxy has been snowboarding, and her family goes to Big Bear every year. They have a house there on the top of the biggest mountain. Big Bear is a superb place and Roxy has the luck to go there. She has a house on the biggest mountain, and she's one of the six people to have a house there on the top mountain.

Peter liked your music choice. The music was catchy.

What's your favorite place to snowboard?

    Warmly,

    Darius, Roxy, and Peter

    1. Dear Darius, Roxy, and Peter,
      Thanks for being so welcoming!
Roxy must have a nice view from her house on top of the mountain!
I have only gone snowboarding twice, but I have been snowblading once, and skiing many times! I always go to Table Mountain, which is a small mountain in Saskatchewan. Most people like to go to Banff, which is a very popular skiing/ snowboarding city in Alberta.
I thought the music was catchy too! It got stuck in my head for a while after I made the video.
      Sincerely,
      Ms. Neumeyer

  6. Dear Ms. Neumeyer,

That was an incredible post, and we think that we can connect with Hockey. Bryce and Ben play hockey every Friday as an enrichment class. It is not ice hockey. It is field hockey, and we play it on the basketball court.

Ben likes the LA Kings, and he also likes players such as Dustin Brown, Jeff Carter, Anze Kopitar, and Wayne Gretzky for the Kings. Both of us like the first line for the Kings, featuring: Anze Kopitar, Dustin Brown, Jeff Carter, Drew Doughty, Rybon Reigher, and the phenomenal Jonathan Quick. Bryce likes Sidney Crosby, Zdeno Chara, Brad Marchand, and Alex Ovechkin.

Who is your favorite hockey team and player? Bryce has been to approximately twenty games, While Ben has only been to about ten games which equals to thirty games. There are seven Canadian teams and twenty-three USA teams in the NHL. Do you know the seven Canadian teams? We will put the answer at the bottom.

    Sincerely,

    Bryce and Ben

P.S. The seven Canadian teams are the Ottawa Senators, Calgary Flames, Vancouver Canucks, Montreal Canadians, Winnipeg Jets, Edmonton Oilers, and the Buffalo Sabers.

    1. Dear Bryce and Ben,
I’m glad you liked my post! Do you play on a team for field hockey? If so what is the name? I got to play lacrosse once at a school and it is very similar to field hockey, except you play with a ball and the sticks have a netting at the end to catch the ball. It was very fun!
My favourite player is Sidney Crosby, who is the captain of the Pittsburgh Penguins. My favourite team is probably the Montreal Canadians. I haven’t been to many NHL games but I have gone to a lot of local games.
I was so close to remembering all of the Canadian teams- I just forgot the Buffalo Sabers! Thanks for leaving the answer. Saskatchewan is too small to have our own NHL team- but we do have our own NFL team. Have you ever heard of the Roughriders football team?
      Sincerely,
      Ms. Neumeyer

    2. Dear Ms. Neumeyer,

We made up a team name for our enrichment field hockey team, and our team name is the Big Blues. The two teams that there are are the red team and the blue team. Bryce's dad knows how to play lacrosse, but he is not all that talented at it. Bryce wonders if you know who P.K Suban is. He is a player for the Montreal Canadiens. Ben plays forward when we play hockey and Bryce is the starting goalie for our team. Bryce has occasionally played forward.

Here are our stats. We will start with Ben. Ben has scored six goals in only two games. Bryce has scored four goals in the two game span. Bryce has saved about thirty saves. Bryce's goals against average is about 75 percent. The total shots for all of us our about fifty shots.

You said that you went to local games, but what teams have you seen play? I have never heard of the Roughriders. Are you sure that they are in the NFL and not in college football?

      Sincerely,

      Bryce and Ben

    3. Dear Bryce and Ben,

Cool name for your hockey team! The school that I interned at had intermural field hockey games that they would play during inside recess (when it is too cold for them to be allowed to be outside).

I have heard of P.K Suban, but don’t know too much about him- I just cheer for the whole team.

You both have very impressive stats!

I have gone to lots of Saskatoon Blades games (they are my home town team) and I also got to attend a game for the 2010 World Junior Hockey Championships, which were held in Saskatoon.

I’m sorry I made a mistake while typing- the Roughriders are actually part of the CFL (the Canadian Football League). They represent our province of Saskatchewan, and just recently won the Grey Cup for the 2013 season. The Grey Cup is the major tournament to end the season- kind of like the Super Bowl, but much smaller.

      Sincerely,
      Ms. Neumeyer

    4. Dear Mrs. Neumeyer,

I don't have Ben with me, but I will keep the conversation going. If you cheer for all of the Canadiens then you may know who Carey Price is. He is the goalie for the Canadiens. I have a calendar of hockey goalies, and what a coincidence Price is the person on my calender right now!

That sounds correct because I had never heard of the Roughriders, and I know all of the NFL teams. Is the Grey Cup anything like the pro sports cup? If it is tell me how.

Are the Saskatoon Blades in a league?

      Sincerely,

      Bryce

    5. Dear Ms. Neumeyer,

I bet you are very happy about your second consecutive gold medal win. Sweden was a good team, but it was a big win for you Canadians. I am wondering if they gave out an MVP to the best player in the championship? If so, who did they give it to? I think that Carey Price should have won. He had a great Olympic streak of wins. It is also helpful to play for such a good team before you go into the break.

Jeff Carter and Drew Doughty were on team Canada to. Did any of them score goals? Speaking of Kings hockey did you know that the Kings are on an eight game winning streak? The Kings played three straight games in Canada. Did you watch any? The Kings battle Phil Kessle and the Maple Leafs at Staples Center. Then they play the Ducks at Staples, and I am going! That would be a ten game winning streak if they win.

      Bryce

Thanks you for sharing that information with Mrs Yollis and her class. You've also shared it with others around the world. We're a class of 28 twelve and thirteen year old students in Taranaki, New Zealand.

The work she is done continues to amaze me with its quality and its depth and she has shaped so many students online work its amazing. You are going to learn an incredible amount from working with her. We will be watching from her, and I will show the students your video when they start school next week, I will think that they will find the Canadian facts interesting.

I am very excited to be with Mrs. Yollis as well! I am pretty new to using technology in the classroom, so I hope to soak up as much knowledge as possibly during this time. I have had the privilege to spend some time looking at her classroom blog and I have already come to see the amazing ways she uses technology to enhance learning in her classroom.

    2. @ Mr. Webb from New Zealand,

Thank you so much for your kind words! It really meant a lot to me. We have developed such a wonderful friendship and we have the Internet and blogging to thank. I find the blogging community to be a very supportive group of learners, and we look forward to connecting with your new class. If school is starting in New Zealand, we must be halfway through our year.

Are you at a new school?

      Warmly,

Yes, I left my old (five years of working there) school at the end of 2013. My new school is a rural school where most of the students and their family are involved in dairy farming in some aspect. It is quite different from the city, Hamilton where I used to teacher. There the population was 150,000. In my new school the population of the immediate area is about 30 although we have 200 students at our school, they come in buses. We aren't back until this coming week so we will check in with you then sometime.
    Mr Webb.
