Happy Thanksgiving ~ 2013!

Reminder: This is the final week of Family Blogging Month!
This  week we had a wonderful time preparing for

Thanksgiving!

One way we did that was by measuring and
 mixing up the ingredients
for our own loaf of pumpkin bread!

We enjoyed a manifold of activities this week! Students wrote about their Thanksgiving feast in a cornucopia, dressed a turkey book report, baked delicious pumpkin bread, and decorated the pumpkin bread to look like a turkey.

We also read a funny fable about a slow-thinking turkey named Thomas T. Turkey.

The story is about how Thomas T. Turkey gets three invitations for Thanksgiving. He is ignorant about traditional Thanksgiving feasts. He wonders what people eat at Thanksgiving. The invitations use word play, so Thomas has no idea that he will become the main course if he accepts any of the invitations. (Word play is when a writer uses a word or phrase that has two meanings.)

Here is a funny example. Can you spot the word play?

Dear Thomas T. Turkey,

We would love to have you for Thanksgiving dinner this year! Come early, the chef has promised a special recipe just for you! You'll be stuffed at our house! Just wait until you see what we're having! Bring your family along too! You will be the guest of honor, and we'll have a special place for you at the dinner table.

Thomas,  Thanksgiving will not be the same without you!

Your comrade,
Bobby Bobcat

What are you doing this Thanksgiving?

Make up an invitation for Thomas T. Turkey. Use word play!

What is your favorite Thanksgiving dish?

  1. Dear Mrs. Yollis,

I, Walters the Watering-Mouth Wolf, have a letter that I want to share with Thomas T. Turkey:

    Dear Tom,

We would be delighted to have you over for our Thanksgiving dinner. You will be the guest of honor at our house. My beloved chief has prepared a special dish with you. It won't be the same without you. Bring your family along with you too! You'll be stuffed at our house!

    Your friend,
    Walters the Wolf

*Smack!* *Smack!* Wait till Tom sees my letter! He'll be delighted to come. My chief has his dressings all ready, just for Thomas. He'll be stuffed at our house, but with STUFFING! Can you guess what we'll do to him?

I can barely wait until delicious Tom waddles into my house! I am pushing a oven right near the door, and I am going to starting up the fire! Oh boy, will Thomas be hot at my house!

As you know, I am obviously going to cook Thomas, and I don't think he will be happy about that. First, I am going to have some yams ready for Thomas T. Turkey, along with some mashed potatoes with gravy. Next, I am going to have a lovely berry juice ready for yummy Tom. Finally, I am going to just shove him into the oven, and that will be the end of him! (My plan is to stuff him until he is a plump and juicy, and after, I am going to cook him.) I just simply cannot wait! :-D

    Hungrily,
    W☆lters the Watering-Mouth W★lf (Heather)

    Dear Mrs. Yollis,

The pumpkin bread that Heather brought home was so delicious. I like the decoration of turkeys that the class created.

This Thanksgiving, I will cook a turkey and invite a few other families to come over for Thanksgiving dinner. I am trying to cook the turkey the way Beijing duck is cooked. I hope it will taste good.

    Happy Thanksgiving!

  3. Dear Mrs. Yollis,

I am with my family including 4 other families to enjoy some time in a resort in San Diego, CA. One family is from New Jersey and another one from India. We also plan to celebrate someones birthday. We arranged to play different games and eat a variety of food.

What did you do for Thanksgiving ?

    Sincerely

  4. Dear Mrs. Yollis,

Baking pumpkin bread with your wonderful students last week was a real treat! They were all extremely polite and excellent about following all your rules! The pumpkin bread tasted scrumptious! I'm so glad our baking was successful!

I hope you had a wonderful Thanksgiving filled with culinary delights! We shared Thanksgiving with friends who added dishes like Israeli couscous and latkes to the menu in honor of Hannukah! It was a bonus to be able to celebrate both holidays on the same day this year!

Enjoy the remainder of your break!

    Warmly,
    Dionne (Jemma's mom)

  5. Dear Mrs. Yollis,

I live in Sacramento and our family drove to Los Angeles for Thanksgiving. I am Samantha's cousin and I got to see her on that weekend. My favorite Thanksgiving food was mashed potatoes!

I also ate yummy japanese persimmon fruit at my grandparent's house. Have you ever tried one?

    From,
Nathan (Samantha's 8 year old cousin)

  6. Dear Mrs. Yollis,

During the Thanksgiving break I went to New York. We went to New York because my mom is from there, and also because we wanted to be with my mom's side of the family for the holiday. My dad also enjoyed the trip because my dad is good friends with our relatives in New York. I got to see my two year old cousin and my 94 year old great grandma. I also got to see my aunts and uncles. We had about 30 people at our Thanksgiving feast! We also went to an amazing holiday train show at the Bronx Botanical Gardens. This train show was incredible because the model trains ran through famous New York landmarks, but in miniature. The trains came in five different sizes.

My mom took my sister to the Macy's Thanksgiving Day parade.

We also went to upstate New York. Upstate, I saw my favorite pet, Cheyenne. He is a cat who lives with my grandmother in New York City. Cheyenne traveled with us upstate to my grandmother's country house.

One of the best parts of the trip was that I got to go to a Brooklyn Nets vs. LA Lakers basketball game. I am a Lakers fan and the Lakers barely won the game. The score was 99-94. The reason why the Lakers had such a close game was because Kobe has a foot injury and they lost Dwight Howard. The the very best part of the game was that I got a high-five from Pau Gasol!

We are going to post pictures from my trip on the 365 blog.

    From,
    Darius
