Learn to Write a Compound Sentence!

Mrs. Yollis' students are always trying to improve their writing skills.

*       *       *       *       *
 A compound sentence:
  1. Combines two shorter sentences (so has TWO subjects)
  2. Joins the two sentences with  a conjunction (and, or, but, so)
  3. The comma goes BEFORE the conjunction.
*       *       *       *       *
Here are some sample compound sentences, and they are all about Thanksgiving!
(Hey, that's a compound sentence!)
Thanksgiving is celebrated on the fourth Thursday in November, and many families gather for a traditional feast.
In 1620, the Pilgrims landed in Plymouth, Massachusetts, but they had really planned a trip to Virginia.

The Massachusetts winter was extremely cold and  harsh, so everyone had to work together to survive.
The Wampanoag Indians helped the struggling Pilgrims, so they were able to harvest crops for their first feast.
Modern Americans dine on turkey and stuffing at home, or they make a reservation at a local restaurant.

Challenge!
In the comment section tell about your plans for Thanksgiving. Be sure to include at least two COMPOUND SENTENCES.

  1. Dear Mrs Yollis and Grade 2/3
This week I learned a mnemonic (which is a technique for remembering some information) to help me remember some words that are conjunctions. The mnemonic is FANBOYS.

Can you work out the word that each letter stands for? I'll give you the first one:
    For
    A
    N
    B
    O
    Y
    S

Do you know any other mnemonics?

    your buddy
    Mrs McKenzie

P.S. In New Zealand we do not celebrate Thanksgiving, nor do we celebrate the Fourth of July.

  2. Dear Mrs. Yollis,

I like all the food at Thanksgiving, but my favorite is the turkey.
This Thanksgiving will be extra special, because it's my cousin's first birthday.

    From,
    Nate

  3. Hi I am Jenna Mahs friend...my family is going to Denver for the Thanksgiving week vacation. My Grandma and Grandpa live there along with my aunt, uncle and two cousins. I am very excited to see Landen and Brecken and play in the snow and eat turkey.

  4. Dear Mrs. Yollis,

During Thanksgiving I will be in India. In India they do not celebrate Thanksgiving, but I will explain them what Thanksgiving is! We will have a big feast with Indian food. Hopefully, our friends and family from far away, and close by will be there at that point of time to celebrate with us.

    Happy Thanksgiving!

    1. Dear Aashi and Mrs. Yollis,

Aashi, in China they do not celebrate Thanksgiving, and I am not going there for the week of. :-( If I was going, hopefully they will understand what Thanksgiving is.

Mrs. Yollis, I like all the food for Thanksgiving, but the turkey, mashed potato, and the pumpkin bread are the best.

Would you rather be a Pilgrim, or be a regular person? I would want to be a regular person because you don't need to sail on a ship and starve.

      Sincerely,
      Heather

  5. Dear Class,

I really enjoy eating Thanksgiving dinner, but sometimes I eat too much food. When I eat too much food I get a tummy ache. This year I will only eat a little bit of each food, so I will be able to taste everything without getting a tummy ache.

I hope you all enjoy Thanksgiving.

  6. Dear Dad,

    What grand compound sentences!

I agree I would eat a lot of Thanksgiving foods, but I will get a stomachache. :-(

The class read your comment, and we published it. The class already has 166 comments this November, and it's only the 9th!

    Sincerly,
    Bryce

  7. Dear Mrs. Yollis and all the creative minds of the classroom,
I will be flying all the way from Belgium to enjoy spending Thanksgiving with those I love most. I don't know about you, but Thanksgiving is one of my favorite holidays. We will most likely spend Thanksgiving Eve cooking up a storm: turkey, mashed potatoes, green beans, stuffing and pies. Yum! Thanksgiving will be dedicated to eating, laughing, and probably singing a little karaoke as the evening wears on ;)
    Happy Thanksgiving everyone!
    Gobble-gobble greetings,
    Emily (Keira's step-aunt)

    Dear Mrs. Yollis,

Thanksgiving is one of my favorite holidays! It is the perfect day for quality time with loved ones, and amazing food.

Many people eat more food than normal on Thanksgiving day, so you can compensate by going on a walk with your family between dinner and dessert. It's a great way to enjoy crisp Autumn weather, and maintain a healthy lifestyle.

Does anyone else have any healthy tips?

    Gobble, gobble!

  11. Dear Mrs. Yollis,

I enjoyed the conference this afternoon, but I was disappointed in my writing. I will try harder and stay positive. I'm surprised I have read that many words this year. I love to read!

    Yours truly,

  13. Dear Mrs. Yollis,

Here are some compound sentences for you!

I watch the NFL season and Super Bowl every year, but my favorite team lost to the San Francisco 49ers in the playoffs. Their quarterback Colin Kaepernick was the star of the team so I do not blame the Green Bay Packers, but their defense was really bad :(

I hope they win next year!
