Panda's Perfect Plurals!

Mrs. Yollis' class has been working recently on learning to spell
plural nouns correctly!

There are so many rules about plurals to follow!
Did you know that plural nouns never use apostrophes?
Did you know that not all plurals have an s added to them?

Panda and Hoppy have some plural spelling rules to share with you:

*     *     *     *     *

1. When a singular noun ends with x, ch, sh, or s, add es
Examples: box - boxes              bush - bushes

2. When a singular noun ends in a consonant and y, change the y to an i and add es.
Examples: penny - pennies         fly - flies

3. To some nouns ending in f, simply add s.
Examples: chief - chiefs             bluff - bluffs

4. To other nouns ending in f or fe, change the f or fe to v and add  es
Examples: wolf - wolves            leaf - leaves

5. Some singular nouns form their plurals in special ways. There is no rule for these, so you just have to memorize them!
Examples: tooth - teeth               mouse - mice
*     *     *     *     *
Hoppy challenges you to use three different plurals in a comment!
Here is Hoppy's example:
Dear Class,
Yesterday three flies landed on my lilypad. I tried so hard to eat them, but they got away!  I wonder how many of you children would want to eat flies instead of candies on Halloween?

After missing the flies, I hopped off my lilypad into the water where I saw some geese paddling by. They were carrying some leaves back to their nests. I swam along, so I could say hello to their babies!

I'm looking forward to reading your comments full of positively perfect plurals!

Ribbit and regards,
Hoppy

P. S. Be sure to use html code to make your plurals bold!

  1. Dear Mrs. Yollis and Class,

I am so glad that you are publishing a post about plurals!

Last week, I found some mice running around on the shelves in my garage. I caught them and gave them to the pack of wolves that live next door.

Today, my dogs found fourteen loaves of pumpkin bread on the shelves in the kitchen. Then I saw the dogs sharing the loaves with their puppies! Before they could devour them, I snatched the loaves away.

Yesterday, I pole vaulted with nine other pandas. After the game, we consumed a bowl of cherries and our bamboo poles.

Tomorrow, I will go with Bev and Mrs. Yollis to a concert in Beverly Hills. I will enjoy spending time with these two women. There are no children allowed at the concert.

    Plurally yours,
    Panda

    1. Dear Panda,

I want to have a play date with my best friends counting you Panda.

We had a lot of cool parties in my class this year.

There were many flies in the pies.

The say that cats have nine lives.

      Do you like rollocoasters?

      Warmly,
      Sean

    2. @ Sean,

Thanks for including me as one of your friends!

How many cool parties do you think you attend each year?

What flavor were the pies, minus the flies. Yuck!

What does that mean? A cat has nine lives.

No, I do not like rollercoasters. Like Mobi, the movement gives me uncomfortable butterflies in my stomach.

  2. Dear Mrs. Yollis,

Three days ago, I went on a camp out and rode our bikes to many places. Then my tribe walked to Indian caves. Afterwards, I toasted many slices of bread. We were going to drive the electric cars, but the steering broke. My friends and I made fires. Then we roasted marshmallows to make big s'mores. The next day we packed up our tents and went home.

  3. Dear Mrs. Y♥llis,

It's Autumn and leaves are falling from the trees. Tomorrow is Halloween. There will be two witches and two ninjas at our house. The ninjas will be wearing scarves to cover their faces. I wonder if I'll see any pandas or ponies? Maybe we'll see a few mummies and fairies.

I know many children will be getting candy tomorrow night. My favorite kind of candy is Milk Duds. What is your favorite kind of candy?

Panda, will you dress up for Halloween tomorrow? If you do, what will you be?

    Your Halloween loving student,
    ♥Jenna♥

  4. Hi Mrs Yollis & Class
We are preparing for bonfire night in England! On Bonfire night, people build huge bonfires and set off fireworks, they munch on sausages, toffees, and parkin, and they light sparklers. Dogs, cats, and sheep don't like the loud bangs, but we LOVE them! On the bonfires we burn old boxes, bunches of twigs and the leaves that have fallen from the trees.
    Have lots of plural fun!

  5. Dear Mrs. Yollis and Class,

I grew up on a farm where we had cows and calves. All together they were called cattle. We had one sheep and when she had a lamb, then we had two sheep. It's wonderful to read about your plurals because I'm a college student studying to be a teacher.

    Best wishes,
    Mike

  6. Dear Mrs. Yollis' students,

Thank you for sharing this excellent post about plurals! Plurals have some interesting rules, and it's nice to have them all in one place.

The other day I was hiking in the forest, looking at all the gorgeous autumn leaves. There were blue skies overhead and I saw a giant "V" of geese flying south for the winter. In the forests in fall there are a lot of mushrooms and other fungi sprouting up from the damp ground. It was a beautiful fall hike!

  8. Dear Mrs Yollis and class,

    Wow, what a great post!
Funny enough,4KM just looked at your post and we realized that we were learning about that this morning, and we are doing an activity about plurals right now. It will be hard to write three plurals in our comment. I just got an idea we will do a story and put plurals in it, here it is:

"One day, my mum said we are going to my aunts's house. We are going there for dinner and having two PIECES of toast each. My COUSINS are going to be there, yeah!

When my COUSINS and I went outside we played Pop the Balloons and my cousin, Claudia sat on a balloon and popped it.

    See you later,
    Maddy and Libstar :-)

  9. Dear Panda,

    We accept your challenge:

One day I saw six flies flying around the kitchen. Yesterday, I saw eight children playing at the park. On Sunday, there were ten men riding their bikes.

We hope you like our plurals!

Can you think up a story that has ten plurals?

    Sincerely,
    Nate and Daniel

  10. Dear Mrs. Yollis,

I have a story about a silly Thanksgiving dinner:

Once upon a turkey, there was a girl named Mallory, and she was having a Thanksgiving dinner. When it was time to eat, there was no turkey! Instead My grandparents ordered one thousand boxes of pizza. But it didn't stop there. A bunch of clowns came and threw pies at us.:O Then the pizzas came, but instead the pizza boxes were filled with crabs!

    Can anyone continue my story?

If not, I will finish on Thursday.

    Your plural-loving student,
    Mallory
