In Southern California, we do not experience autumn, or fall,
the same way some places do.
However, we do feel a change in our weather, and even
the leaves of our trees sometimes change color!

  1. Hi Mrs.Yollis. My name is Caroline and I am in Mr.Miller's class. I love how your class blog has so many educational activities on it. I was reading through the Fabulous Fall post and actually I do have a deciduous tree in my yard. I look forward to commenting more on your class blog and on your students blog.

    1. @ Caroline,

Thanks so much for your wonderful comment! You are so lucky you are in Mr. Miller's class! He is a wonderful teacher, great person, and fabulous photographer.

What kind of deciduous tree do you have? I have two liquid Amber trees in my backyard. Currently, they are completely green and full of leaves. The weather here has been quite warm, but once the temperatures drop...so will the leaves. The leaves turn: yellow, red, orange, burgundy, and a blend of them all. I'll be adding some photos of my tree to our photo of the day blog. I invite you to send us a photo of your tree once it starts changing. Would you like to do that?

      Your new friend,
      Mrs. Y♥llis

    2. You are so very welcome! I don't know what time my deciduous tree I have, but I will ask my parents and I'll get back to you on that.

I would love to send you a photo of my tree when it starts to change. I thought maybe I would take a now and then picture and send it to you. All I have to do is ask Mr. Miller how to do that.

Hope to hear from you soon,
      Caroline

  2. Dear Mrs Yollis and class,

I really enjoyed reading all about your up and coming season. Right now down under our season is spring. It is a really lovely season as every thing is looking lovely and green and birds are singing first thing in the morning till late at night.

But the best thing of all is waking to some really beautiful mornings, instead of dark black mornings.

Also our dog Hack enjoys this time of the year for he loves to lay in the path of the warm sunshine. For it's not to hot for him.

    From your friend down under,
    AA :)

  3. Dear Mrs.Yollis,

I love the picture you posted for Fabulous Fall. My favorite fall sport is soccer because I'm on a soccer team with my friends. One thing that I like about fall is how the leaves change colors. My favorite color leaves are red and orange. We do not have any deciduous trees in our backyard, all the leaves stay green through all the seasons.

Some trees change color. As winter comes, there is less sunshine and water. Trees stop making food and use the food that they stored over the summer to last through the winter. Once all the chlorophyll is out of the leaves, the leaves show their real color.

What is your favorite color leaf?

    Bennett

  4. Dear Mrs. Yollis and bloggers,

Thank you for all the great information about Fall. I learned how leaves change color.

    I love Autumn.

I have a deciduous tree in my front yard. My favorite fall activity is to rake the leaves and jump into leaf piles before putting them in the bin.

My favorite part about autumn is also my birthday.

I also like Halloween because I can dress up as anything I want.

I looked up about deciduous forests on google and saw beautiful pictures. It said there are some in Australia too.

My favorite pictures were of the animals in the deciduous forest like bear cubs and a fox. Those are just some of the animals in a deciduous forrest.

Can you name other animals in a diciduous forrest?

    Sincerely,

    Chloe

  5. Dear Mrs. Yollis and class,

Fall (autumn) can be a much less colourful experience for us in Australia. Few native trees change colour although many parks and homes have non-native trees to add a touch of colour.

What are my favourite fall sports and activities?

I know it’s autumn when I see football start up at the sportsground across the road. Soccer is a game played by many children and adults while AFL is played on the oval football field. In the next town, rugby league is played. I don’t really follow any code of football but think they’re great activities.

    Rugby League link - http://www.nrl.com/
    Soccer - http://www.footballaustralia.com.au/

Here, now, it’s spring. The sport ground is now being used for cricket. The first games of the season have just been played.

    Cricket - http://www.cricket.com.au/

My favourite activity any time of year is hiking. It’s not a team sport but being out along a favourite trail or making my own trail is a great way of keeping the mind and body healthy. Seeing animals and interesting plants along the way is a bonus.

What do I like most about fall?

For me, it’s a sign of cooler times ahead. While I enjoy walking in summer as well, temperatures can, at times, reach over 100F and bushfires are always a worry when times are drier. After a couple wetter years, our upcoming summer starting in December will be drier so bushfires are again a concern in many Australian areas.

Why do some trees change colour? Do I have any deciduous trees in my yard?

In my yard, we have a Japanese maple. As autumn progresses, the leaves change through golden and orange to brown before falling and leaving branches like bony, bare fingers. Now, with spring underway, the tree is once again covered in green leaves with bees buzzing around them. This is our only deciduous tree.

Deciduous trees have an amazing adaptation for surviving the winter months. Drawing nutrients away from their leaves before the leaves fall means they are reasonably energy efficient. They really are green energy even when their leaves are golden to brown. :)

    Keep blogging.

  6. Dear Mrs. Yollis,

I LOVE fall! It is my very favorite time of the year!

In Washington state we are fortunate to experience all four seasons. Every part of our year is marked by distinct differences.

We have lots of deciduous trees and it gets so colorful here when the leaves change color. I grew up in New England, and it's almost as beautiful here as there. Red, orange, yellow, and every combination of those colors brighten the forests.

The only bad part about all those leaves is when they fall off and litter our yard! We have 4 large leaf maple trees in our yard and it means lots of work raking!

    Yea for Fall!

  7. Dear Mrs. Y♥llis,

Yes, I do have a deciduous tree. It's a Sycamore tree. It's in my front yard. I bet it is around 60 or 70 feet tall. It's about 10 or 20 feet taller than our house.
The best thing about Fall is Halloween. I love Halloween because of the candy and all the spooks [it gives me chills].
My favorite Fall sport is ice skating. My dad takes my sister and me ice skating most Wednesdays in Fall and Winter.

    Sincerely,
    Gr☀ce

  8. Dear Mrs. Yollis,

I have a deciduos tree in my front yard. It is about the size of my house. My favorite part about fall is Halloween. I like Halloween because of the candy. I also like playing soccer in the fall because it is the only sport I play during this time of year, and it is fun slide tackling into piles of leaves. Sadly, my dad sometimes chops down some branches off the beutfuiul tree.:( On the bright side he doesn't do as much.:) Do you have any decidious trees in your backyard?

    Sincerly,

  9. Dear Mrs.Y♥llis,

I have six deciduous trees in my backyard. One is a liquid Amber like yours. I also have a birch tree and three mulberry trees. My favorite deciduous tree is our plum tree because it produces delicious plums, but we only got a few plums this year. Some years we get hundreds of tiny sweet plums. My second favorite deciduous tree is one of our mulberries because it's fun to climb.

    Sincerely,
    Nate

  10. Dear Mrs. Y♥llis,
I have two deciduous trees in my backyard.
Their leaves are not falling yet.
Even though they are not falling now, they were in the summer.
    I wonder why?
    Can anyone answer my question?

  11. Dear Mrs. Yollis,

I have no trees that change color in my backyard although, I don't really have a lot of trees.

My favorite sport to play in the fall is soccer. I enjoy playing this sport because I like to run and practice with my friends.

Autumn (fall) is a beatiful season. Watching leaves fall and change color gets me excited.

  12. Dear Mrs. Yollis and the class,
It is indeed amazing to witness the change of the seasons and particularly fall season as we get to witness the beautiful fall colors and falling leaves all around.

Aashi wanted me to share with her classmates more about the game of cricket which Mr. Mannell mentioned in one of his post. The closest that the game of cricket resembles to any other sports is the game of "Baseball" as cricket also has bat, ball, scores, runs, innings, batsman, bowler ("pitcher").

Cricket is basically a bat and ball sport played between two teams of 11 players each. The aim is for the batsman to hit the ball with the bat and score as many runs as possible by running across the pitch guarded by wickets at 2 ends. There is a concept of 4 runs and 6 runs whereby the batsman hits the ball and sends it across the fence or the boundary at the periphery of the ground. The aim of the bowler who is similar to "pitcher" in baseball is to bowl and restrict the batsman from scoring or hitting. The bowlers aim is to get the batsman out by hitting the wickets behind him or having him caught by one of the fielders.

The team who scores maximum total runs is the winner.

Let me know if any one of you have more queries on the wonderful game of cricket!

    Thanks,
    Amreesh (Aashi's Dad)

  13. Dear Mrs. Yollis,

Every year you take amazing images of nature. So far in my back yard the trees are still green with only a few yellow leaves in certain places.

It is still very warm outside so it feels like summer instead of fall. My favorite activity to do in the fall is to go hiking. Maybe when it cools down, my family and I will go and also take some great photos of nature.

  14. Dear Mrs. Yollis and class,
The picture you posted in your fall blog is really beautiful. We live in New Jersey and the fall has arrived here. Every autumn our leaves change. Some people collect those leaves and make leaf books. Today is a bit warm, but it should be getting cooler soon.

Some of our favorite fall sports are: football, tennis, soccer and basketball. Some other activities we do in the fall include jumping in piles of leaves, carving pumpkins and celebrating Halloween.

Our favorite things about fall are that it's not too hot or too cold, we can go hiking and we can go apple picking. We can search for pretty leaves.

One thing one of our teachers doesn't like about fall is raking leaves!! She lives on a wooded lot, and there are A LOT of fallen leaves by the time Halloween rolls around. Another of our teachers loves to go on haunted hay rides in the fall.

We are just learning about blogs, and we have really enjoyed looking at your site. Thank you for sharing.
    Mrs. Young's Class (New Jersey!).

  19. Dear Mrs. Yollis and her creative class,
Since fall is my favorite season of the year, I was eager to read your blog about "Awesome Autumn". I enjoyed reading so much new information about this time of year, and I especially enjoyed the selection of poems which were so entertaining! When I taught in a classroom, I thoroughly enjoyed all of the autumn activities that could be included in the school day for reading, math, geography, art and science. It looks like you do many, many fun fall activities, too!

Collin's grandfather and I have six deciduous trees in our yard which are wonderful for giving us shade in the summer, beautiful russet, yellow and brown leaves in autumn and clear views for the sun to shine through in winter. Six trees shed lots of leaves, so they also provide us with ample opportunity to be outside raking them off the pathway! We live in the Central Valley where it is still very warm, so our leaves have not begun to change color. When they do change I always say, "This is a feast for the eyes", and I mean every word of it. Do you have a favorite season, too? Why is it special to you? I hope you all enjoy this awesome autumn.

    Sincerely,
    Marsha (Collin's grandmother)
