  1. Dear Mrs. Yollis and class,

Mystery Skypes are a wonderful investigative activity. Not only do you have the chance to study your country, you also have fun in the process. :)

Imagine the same activity on a global scale. The accent of the speaker would help if you were familiar with them. The time of day might help if you could work it out. Even the season of the year would tell you if the country was in the northern or southern hemisphere. With around 300 countries in our world, it would be hard to narrow it down but what a challenge. :)

Keep blogging and Skyping. I always enjoy your posts.

    1. @ Mr. Mannell,

The Mystery Skype events are always exciting. Not only is it thrilling to get the "yes" answers to the questions, but everyone has a job to do, so the class really works together.

I love your idea of the global call. When we Skyped with Langwitches during our first call, the call was from within the United States, but she has a foreign accent and it definitely added a new layer to the mix. Let's plan on doing one with you next year. It would be a great way to introduce the class to you.

      Have a great day!

  2. Dear Mrs Yollis and class,

My name is Liv S and I am in Miss Jordan's class this year. This is the second time I have had Mrs Morris and Miss Jordan as teachers so I am very lucky.

Your mystery Skype call sounded really fun. You all did really well figuring out where the mystery class was from. With a lot of states in your country, you were amazing. It also looked like you learnt a lot.

4KM and 4KJ recently mystery Skyped someone. The story is...
One day we had a mystery comment on our blog. The 'mystery someone' had left clues about himself/herself
4KM and 4KJ put on their 'thinking caps' and tried to figure this out.
A very smart someone discovered this 'mystery someone',was Lincoln Memorial!
We mystery skyped someone once, a black screen was seen, nothing else,an American started to talk, a picture finally appeared on the screen, it was Mr Avery!

    From your new blogging buddy,
    Liv S :-)

What a fabulous comment you have written! You shared a bit about who you are, you responded to our post, and you made a perfect connection to the post! Well done, Liv! I hope you come back often and comment! :-)

How fun to do a global call. Mr. Mannell and I were just talking about that in the comment above. Hearing an accent would be a real clue about where the mystery call was from.

Yes, America has fifty states, so it is really hard to narrow it down. Our state, California, is the third largest state...so we're not that hard to guess sometimes. Also, if you look at a map of America, the western states are much larger than the eastern states. So once a class figures out we are a Pacific State (one of the five that touch the Pacific Ocean) they'll figure it out.

You were very fortunate to get Miss Jordan and Mrs. Morris again. As you know, we have been friends for many years. It's like we all teach at the same school!

Are you hoping to earn your own blog? Your commenting skills are outstanding. :-)

      Your friend,
      Mrs. Y♥llis

  3. Dear Mrs Yollis and class,

Well done on another wonderful mystery skype call. You sure are all super smart to realise who it was. For I have to say I am not very good at working out mystery skype calls.

As you can see that you all worked together as a team and worked out who it was.

    From your pal,
    AA

  4. Dear Mr Yollis,
I love the idea of a mystery Skype and how in the US this would be a great way to learn about all the different states. I am intrigued by Mr Mannell's idea of a mystery Skype with another country, too. I wonder if accents are a give-away in the US too - can you tell where a person is from by how they speak? Here in the UK, although we are a small country, regional accents are quite a big clue as to where someone is from, and most of the big cities have very different accents. Experts can narrow down an accent to 10 miles!

Thank you for all the detail about how you went about your mystery call, it has really got me thinking!

  5. Dear Mrs. Yollis and class,

It looks like your class did an amazing job with the Mystery Skype! It's always so much fun to try and determine where another class is from.

We haven't Mystery Skyped with anyone in a while but now you've inspired me to try to find someone to skype with! My students always love it when we do!

    Thank you!

    Sincerely,
    Mr. Avery

  6. Dear Mrs. Yollis,

The Mystery Skype Call was really exciting!

In the call I was the inquirer. It was really fun, but to be honest I was pretty nervous!

Mrs. Pearson's community is very different from ours in many different ways. For example, their community doesn't have many stores around them like we do.

The clue that really helped me was that the Mississippi river ran through their state.

    Sincerely,
    Leila
