The Polygon Movie

Mrs. Yollis' class has been investigating geometry!

The three different types of angles were discovered.

Parts of a circle have been identified.

They even used GoogleEarth to locate 2 and 3-dimensional figures.

Today, the students are learning about POLYGONS!
(A polygon is a closed figure with straight lines.)

In this 2008 drama that Mrs. Yollis wrote, Circle tries to get a starring role in the new movie,
Polygons
but is forced to accept the fact that

A CIRCLE is NOT A POLYGON and never will be.

Don't worry, it has a happy ending!

Do you see any polygons in your house?

Which polygon is your favorite?

Which triangle do you prefer?

  1. Dear Mrs. Yollis and class,

I am sitting in my Harry Potter decorated office and I can find lots of polygons. Most of them are rectangles... the windows, doors, desk, computer screen, keyboard, frames, walls, books, and magazines.

My favorite triangle is the Isosceles triangle which is the shape of the Hogwarts Sorting Hat.

    1. @ Maya,

Yes, now that we know what a polygon is, we see them everywhere! Like you said, most of them are rectangles.

I love how you already know the name of one type of triangle! I like the isosceles too. However, my favorite is the equilateral triangle. The equilateral is my favorite because it looks the same no matter which way you rotate it. It's the one with the three 60˚ angles.

      Thanks for a great comment!

  2. Dear Mrs Yollis and class,

I love this video when I first viewed and I still love it now. Your video explained polygons in a fun round about way. :)

Just like Maya I am sitting in a room filled with heaps of polygons. However I mainly have a lot of squares.
Since my room is mainly filled with squares I would have to say that my favourite shapes is the square.

  3. Dear Mrs. Yollis and third graders,

I just found your blog and I think that you are sensational! I enjoyed your enthusiasm and careful pronunciation.

I also teach third grade! Our school for Spanish speaking Newcomer students. So, yes! Our entire student body is comprised of children who have just immigrated to the U.S. and are in the process of learning English while keeping with the third grade curriculum.

    We live in San Francisco!

    Keep up the fabulous work!!!

  4. Dear Mrs. Yollis,
What an amazing math movie! I am so impressed! My goal for next year is to learn how to make movies like this and then show teachers how to do it. I may have to ask your students for advice! I hope you don't mind if I use this movie as an example of how to make a math movie?
My favorite polygon is a skinny, long rectangle. That's because snow skis are long rectangles and I love to ski! In fact, I will be in Canada soon skiing for a few days.

      @ Mrs. Hembree,

Thank you for the spectacular comment!

We both love skiing as well! Acacia is going to ski soon and Leila has already done her share of skiing for the year.

Leila's favorite polygon is a triangle and Acacia's is a heptagon.

Mrs. Yollis does not mind if you use her polygon movie, but I bet you can make your own math movie too.

      Sincerely,
      ♥Leila and Acacia♥

  5. Hello Mrs. Yollis and class,

What can I say? I found your polygon video both fun to watch and informative.

I was a little worried when all of the polygons left out poor circle but it seems at the end circle had something to look forward to doing. I'm sure the President of the United Shapes must have had a hand in funding the next video so circle was happy. We must remember, circle may not be a polygon but is a shape.

    I like happy endings. :)

Do you see any polygons in your house?

There are so many polygons in this very room. I even have some triangles as well as squares, rectangles and many others. There are circles too but they're to the side as they aren't polygons.

    Which polygon is your favorite?

My favourite polygon wasn't mentioned. It's the dodecagon. It has 12 straight sides. Why is it a favourite? It's the shape of a face on Australia's 50c coin. Here's a link to a scan of a coin...

    Which triangle do you prefer?

I prefer the scalene because of how very different it can look.
The equilateral triangle has the same length sides and same size angles and can only grow larger or smaller.
The isosceles triangle is a little more interesting but still must have two sides the same length.
Now the scalene, it's something very different. No two sides are the same length and no two angles the same size. It's an individual.

Thanks for sharing yet another wonderful post. Who would have thought shapes were so interesting? Okay, I always thought them interesting but that's the teacher speaking. :)

  6. Dear Mrs. Yollis,

I love the video and think it was a great idea to post about polygons!
In my house the polygons you see the most are squares and rectangles. Most of the polygons in our house are rectangles like picture frames, windows, doors, paper and book covers.

I see a few square polygons like CD cases and some of our pictures.

My favorite polygon is a triangle and my favorite triangle is equilateral. It is hard to find triangles in our house, but I found a pretty triangular design on one of our cabinets.

Do you have a favorite polygon?

    Love,

    Kelly

    1. Dear Kelly,

I love your comment! My favorite polygon is a square! I love the square because it can be a lot of things! Like a rectangle, square (obviously), and many many more things!

In my house, I have seen triangles, rectangles, squares, and octagons!

      Sincerely,
      Sasha♥♥
