Happy Valentine's Day!

Today we recorded a special Valentine's Day song! We hope you enjoy our singing!

L is for the way you look at me
O is for the only one I see
V is very, very extraordinary
E is even more than anyone that you adore

Love is all that I can give to you
Love is more than just a game for two
Two in love can make it
Take my heart and please don't break it
Love was made for me and you!

Thank you Mrs. Boyd for being our accompanist!

♥     ♥     ♥     ♥     ♥

We celebrated throughout the day. First, Royce's mom put a fruit medley together using red fruit donated by class members.

Students passed out their valentines. Many students wrote the valentine names in cursive! Ooh la la!

At the end of the day, Mrs. Yollis said that students could open their valentines or have free-time.

Many students opted to build tessellations. A tessellation is flat design that tessellates. That means that the shapes fit together with NO GAPS and NO OVERLAPS!

This beauty has been growing for two days!

Some students added dots to this growing equilateral triangle pattern.

As we started to get Valentine's Day comments about our L-O-V-E song, students started commenting back!

What did you give for Valentine's Day?

  1. Dear Mrs Yollis' class,
You sing beautifully, and what a very romantic song for February 14th! I was wondering if you wore red and pink clothes especially for Valentine's Day, or if this is just a coincidence? Do you have the tradition of sending anonymous Valentine's Day cards too, or do you sign your name in yours? It is common to write a small romantic verse and sign with a ? on your Valentine's Day card in the UK!
Sadly, I didn't get any... what about you?

    1. Dear Mrs. Monaghan,

Thank you for saying that we are great singers. Actually Mrs. Yollis recommended that we wear red and pink clothes, but we wore a gray and black shirt because we forgot to wear red and pink.

No, we don't, but it would be fun if we did not sign our names and made it a mystery. Well at least I do, but we don't know about anyone else.

In the classroom, people usually don't write questions in their valentines card. Most people don't bring cards, they usually bring junk food/candy. Some of us bring homemade junk food. We had a lot of valentines because our class has to give them to all of us.

      Sincerely,
      Parsa and Aidan

Thank you for putting it on your web page! My day has been good so far! First, my brother woke me up with a lovely video! Second, I get to spend most of my day with all my friends and family. Last but not least, at school we make these bags and we then put candy in the on Valentines Day!

What do you do for Valentines Day?

What will I give today? Lot's of hugs and kisses. (But probably not to Royce- he doesn't like kisses ☺).

For one of your first comments, that that was fantastic! You are now a great commenter!

I have some suggestions to make your comments better:

      • Use compound sentences
      * Use dependent clauses
      ∆ Use high level vocabulary
      • Add relevant information
      * Ask relevant questions

Here is a little bit of information about our party. First, we are going to play some games and then open our candy bags! I am building a huge tessellation with my classmates!

      Happy Valentine's Day!

    Dear Mrs. Yollis and class,

What a wonderful performance of a lovely song! It put a huge smile on my face! I can't think of a better present for Valentine's Day.

I gave my two favorite valentines, Leila and Hannah, two cute Teddy Bears and two candles that were shaped like a Teddy Bear. I also plan on making them and my husband a lovely dinner tonight. Spending time with family is my gift to myself, as it is my favorite thing in the world!

    Happy Valentine's Day everyone!

The presents you gave me were wonderful, so I couldn't pick a favorite! The teddy bear you gave me had a little box in front of it, but I still haven't decided what to put in it yet.

The dinner you made was delicious. It is probably the tastiest thing I had all week.

  6. Dear Mom,

What a comment! I thought that you only like to put two or three sentences in my comment. Did you change your mind?

Did you see me singing the song? In case you didn't, I was next to Matthew and the E. Also, Maya was the L, Rexon was the O, and Acacia was the V. I was just holding the heart that I brought into the class when you were setting up the Valentine's Day fruit melody. Did you see it? I will be bringing it home anyway.

Other people had their little hearts also. I think that some people in the top row overdid it with their hearts.

I DO NOT WANT KISSES, so please do not give them to me. If you try to after piano, I will go and hide.

I also had other little parties like passing out our valentine's, and we are going to have a party in the afternoon where we are going to have lots of games, cookies, and students will have free time.

    Sincerely,
    ◱R♔yce◲

    2. @ Sammy,

Unique is pronounced (yoo-neek) and it means "unlike anything else." Seems like a fitting definition for the type of video your class created. And yes, in answer to your question, I did steal just one piece of candy from your bag. I'm sorry, but you know that when there are Skittles around, I just can't help myself!

  16. Dear Mrs. Yollis's class,

I have a very funny Valentine's story to tell you. One of my friends had given me some Hershey's kisses for Valentines day, and I put it in the same pocket of my backpack as my notecards for science. We all went to bed, and that was all... or so we thought. Late at night, my mom heard a weird noise from downstairs. She sent to go look, and she found my chocolates and flashcards in my dogs bed! Apparently, my dog was yearning for some chocolate, and some knowledge of genetics. My dogs misadventure with my chocolates is probably the first time ever that a dog has truly eaten someone's homework.

Thanks so much for taking the time to comment on our class blog. We love it!

Your story was very funny, and I made a connection to it. About 24 years ago, I lived at home with my parents and our family dog, Vern. I had just started teaching. The students in my third grade class had done a book report and two of the reports involved food. For the book, The Chocolate Touch, the boy had glued little chocolate bars on the cover. For the Popcorn Project, there was pop corn glued on the front. Well, I graded the reports and then set them on the floor in a neat stack. Guess who got in and LOVED the book reports? Vern! Imagine how embarrassed I was to give the book reports back and say, "I'm sorry, my dog ate your report!"

      Thanks for a wonderful comment!

I gave out homemade chocolate candies. All you had to do was melt a lot of chocolate, pour the chocolate in a shaper, then put them in the fridge for 2 hours. After 2 hours, you will have chocolate candies. ( If you want to make chocolate lollipops, put a stick in the shaper and then put them in the refrigerator).

An awesome video and I love the song. You have beautiful voices. Even the big fellow in front. Is he your mascot? We celebrated the dayin a small way. We made Valentine bags but not as elaborate as yours. We had a cookie, doritos and juice as a treat. We opened our Valentine's then we had to calculate how much they were worth if we paid a penny for them, a nickel, dime, quarter or dollar. We like your designs. You spent a lot of time doing those.
What is the weather like in California? We had a 60 degree day today but earlier this week it was like 30 degrees F.

This song was very new to me. Before we sung it, I had never heard of it. In my opinion, Mrs. Yollis' idea of the letters spelling love was amazing too!

Our fruit medley was completely made of red fruits in honor of Valentine's Day! It had grapes, raspberries, and strawberries. I loved it! Sadly, we do not have fruit day at our school. :-(

I was involved in the tessellation in the third to last picture. It is still not finished, and we started it before Valentine's day! I hope we finish it soon. We are trying to use every single wood pattern piece for both of them! I think that will be hard though.

For Valentine's Day, I gave a valentine with two chocolate hearts on the back. I had one for everybody, even Mrs. Yollis!

    2. Hi ◲♒◮R♔yce◮♒◲,

      Thanks for your reply.

One idea I like about the concept of Valentine's is it's a way to say, "I care."
There need only be a small gift or even a kind word to let others know they're important and worth knowing. The gift of a heart is a great idea.

Tessellations are fun. After reading your reply, I had some Photoshop fun with a tessellation using triangles and hexagons. If you can, have a look at the following picture...

      http://twitpic.com/8loqcq

      Notice...

      1) ...how triangles of the same color only touch at the corners.
      2) ...the triangles on opposite sides of the hexagon are different colors.
      3) ...there are eighteen triangles around each hexagon. Triangles have 3 sides and hexagons 6... 3x6=18

In your tessellation, there is quite a complex pattern. I wonder if it were continued there might be a recurring pattern, i.e the whole of your tessellation would repeat?

It would take a very large number of pieces. :)

  37. Dear Mrs. Yollis and Class,

We enjoyed your video of your Valentine's Day song. We are all studying to be teachers and are beginning to blog in our university class. Your blogging tips have been helpful to us.

Our favorite part about blogging is connecting with people like you. We were inspired by your song and may use it in our own classrooms in the future.

What is your favorite part about blogging?

    Sincerely,

    Mrs. Adair's Class

    1. Dear Mrs. Adair and class,

Thank you for your kind words about our blog and our Valentine's Day song. We had a lot of fun learning and recording it. It's nice because we can listen to it over and over and sing along, too!

My favorite part about blogging is that it provides an authentic place for reading and writing. The students must read the posts or comments in order to comment back in a quality way. The constant practice makes for excellent writers! Just read the comments above if you don't believe me! :-)

Kelly, who is standing right here with me, likes blogging because she gets to connect with people all over the world. For example, today we are skyping with our blogging buddies 4KM and 4KJ in Australia. That's awesome!

Leila, who is also here with me, likes planning new posts. She has earned her own blog and has become a great writer. Right now she is planning a post about cooking with her mother. Yum!

Let us know if you have any other questions!

      Happy Blogging!

      Mrs. Y♥llis

  38. Dear Mrs. Yollis and class,

Thank you for replying to our comment. We have enjoyed your blog.

    We have a few questions.
    1. How did you get started blogging?
    2. Do you have special permission from parents for their children to blog and post pictures?
    3. How do you find the time for blogging?

We tried to post a picture of our class but were unable to do so.

Thanks so much for your help!
