Lucky Hat Day!

This week, Mrs. Yollis' class read  The Lost and Found, a story
in our anthology by Mark Teague.

The story is about three friends who get lost in the Lost and Found bin! Their lucky hats brings them good luck at the end of the story.

*       *       *      *       *

For fun, we wore our lucky hats today!

When the students first entered the classroom, they came up to the front of the class to share their creations.  Mrs. Yollis noticed that when a lucky hat was in front of the light from the projector, it cast a very interesting silhouette. A silhouette is the dark shape and outline of someone or something visible against a lighter background. Here are a few of the lucky hat silhouettes!

Here is what some of the hats looked like up close!

A 5-point star and a 5 dollar bill!

Bottle caps and frogs were poppin' and hoppin' on this hat!

Feathers adorned several hats. Wait, is that a bird's nest?

Eye see a lucky hat!
This number was a fascinating hat. Not only did it have lots of spikes, but it was part hat-part game!

Post-it Notes and playing cards were used!

Even Panda and our new mascot, Beverly, had their lucky hats!

Which hat was the most interesting to you?

Did your hat bring you any good luck?

What lucky items did you have on your hat?

  2. Dear Mrs. Yollis,

First off, my name is Patty and I am Ellie's mom. This is my first time commenting on your classroom's blog and I'm very honored to have the chance to be apart of it. I have really enjoyed reading all about what you and your class do during school as well as learning about you. I especially love reading all the comments people have left and amazed to see that you have a huge following from all over the world!

Secondly, I would like to congratulate you on receiving the "Teacher of the Year" award. I was fortunate enough to be on the upper yard when the superintendent announced your achievement.

Lastly, it was a delight seeing all the kids in their lucky hats today while I was at school. They were so imaginative, original and proud of their creations. The photos of the students' silhouettes are very interesting. They make me wonder what the students have on their hats to make those crazy shapes on their heads.

I look forward to reading all about the wonderful "ed-ventures" you and your class will be blogging about during the year.

    Kindly,
    Patty

  3. @ Ben,

I am so happy that you're still visiting and commenting! You are a super role model for my new students! Thank you, Ben! A lot of the kids know you and look forward to your comments. :-)

The squid hat was fantastic. It was funny because in the story, The Lost and Found, the boys get trapped in the bathroom by a giant squid and missed the math test. Today, we had a math test and I told Matthew that he could not go to the bathroom...he might get trapped by that giant squid and miss the math test! Ha Ha!

Isn't Beverly wonderful! She found me at CostCo and asked if I would bring her home! Of course, I said yes!

    @ Patty, (Ellie's mom)

Welcome to the blog! :-) You are the first parent of this school year to leave a comment! Great!

Blogging has opened up the learning opportunities for my students and I am thrill about that. It's interesting to join classes and learn from one another through the blog. In addition, the students really gain an understanding of geography, time zones, seasons, and so much more!

I hope you will come back often and leave comments. Already you are a terrific role model for all of us! Nice transitions!

    Sincerely,
    Mrs. Y♥llis

  4. Dear Mrs Yollis and students,

Wow I really enjoy reading this post and I loved the fact it was all about hats.

When I was in high school I do remember as part of my uniform I had to wear a hat, unfortunately it didn't bring me much luck.

All your hats were amazing and as for you Mrs Yollis your really stole the show just loved your hat.

Now for my favourite hat I just loved the hat with the caps and frogs now thats what I call been very creative well done. :)

If I had to make a hat with some of my lucky items my hat would have to be covered in beads and mini elephants.

Great work everyone and thank you for sharing.

    From your pal down under,
    AA.

  5. Dear Mrs. Yollis,

My son, Rexon, is one of your new students this year. Our family couldn't wait to see the photos from today's Lucky Hat Day! Rexon had fun envisioning what he wanted his hat to look like and was inspired by your assignment. I especially appreciated the silhouettes. They look like pieces of art. Thank you for showing us how fun learning can be!

    Sincerely,
    Whitney

  7. Dear Mrs Yollis and Students,
    I love all your hats.

The most interesting hat to me was yours Mrs Yollis it was very fancy.

I also liked the number hat.

At Leopold Primary School we have to wear hats now mind you our hats aren't as way out as your hats. Ours are plan and are green.

If I had to desgin a hat mine would have feathers on it and something that says I love blogging. :)

  8. Dear Mrs. Yollis and Class,

From the looks of things, lucky hat day was really fun and a huge success. When Royce left the house this morning, I was a little worried that his hat was too crazy. It looks like he knew exactly what he was doing. When I looked at the silhouettes, there was no mistaking his spiky-teatherball hat. It reminded me of an Angler fish! It was fun trying to guess the themes of the other hats.

I look forward to following the class on this fantastic blog and a big "Thank You" to Mrs. Yollis for starting the year off in such an exciting way.

    Best Regards,

    Gregg (Royce's Dad)

  9. Dear Mrs Yollis and Grade 3
What a fun post! Your hats look very lucky indeed and the silhouettes are enticing.

The 5-year-olds at our school often start the year by making head silhouettes in art, and the pictures always remind me of cameo brooches.

If I made a lucky hat it would have to have something yellow, because that is my favourite colour, perhaps a flower or two for fragrance, a photo of my family, and lastly a little sprinkle of star dust. ☆ ☆

    warm wishes
    Mrs M♔Kenzie

  10. Aloha Mrs. Yollis and third graders,
First of all let me say how much I enjoy The Lost and Found. It was always on my list of read the first week of school stories.

I love all of your lucky hats! Each was very unique and and special. I have a collection of hats but unfortunately none of them have brought me any luck. My favorite hat is purple and was knitted by a grandmother of a former student.

    Have a wonderful Friday!
    A hui hou,
    Mrs. Jacobs

  11. Dear Panda,

What is this I hear? You have a new mascot in your class?

I was so happy and surprised when I saw your new friend Beverly!

For those of though who don't know me, I should introduce myself. My name is Leo and I am 2KM and 2KJ's class mascot. I am a very friendly lion who loves to blog!

Anyway, I would love to find out more about Beverly. Perhaps when the kids are home from school one night we could all Skype together? I bet you have a lot to teach Beverly about quality commenting and being responsible online.

    From your blogging buddy,
    Leo

PS - I almost forgot to say, I love your hats! You are all having so much fun in Mrs Yollis' class.

  13. Dear Mrs. Yollis and Students,

I loved reading this post about your lucky hats! They are all so colorful and interesting and different!

I bet everyone had a fun day wearing their hats and connecting the book. In the Bulldog Library, we call that a book-to-self connection!

Beverly is certainly a BIG addition to your classroom this year! Does she know how to Skype like Panda?

I wonder what story you will read next?

  15. @ Leo,

Thank you so much for your quality comment. You know how much I value a quality comment!

I am looking forward to having the kids leave so we can get on the computer and Skype each other! When are you free?

Beverly is new this year to blogging and to Mrs. Yollis' class. She is not used to sitting in a chair and frequently falls over. When she is not falling over, she is asleep. We think she might be hibernating! She is also knew to Skyping.

Beverly is brown and very soft. :-) She is nice and kind and is willing to share with anyone!

We'll see how she takes to blogging once she wakes up!

    Sincerely,
    Panda

  16. Dear Panda,

Thank you for writing back to me. I bet you and I could teach Beverly all about quality commenting. When I first started in 2KM and 2KJ I didn't know that comments need to be of a good quality. I used to write things like...

Your blog is cool and Your class rocks...

Little did I know, I could get a lot more out of blogging and improve my writing if I followed the guidelines for writing a quality comment

Panda, you also taught me a lot about commenting!

I am free to Skype any night. I get a little lonely when the students and teachers go home. Just jump online with Beverly and we can chat some more about quality commenting.

Oh dear, poor Beverly needs to realise that at school you must try to stay awake! I used to fall asleep in class a lot too until I realised that was bad manners. I'm sure she'll get used to it.

I just love the look of Beverly's soft fur and I must ask her what shampoo she uses.

    Talk to you soon mate,

    Leo

  17. Dear Mrs. Yollis' Class,

We just read The Lost and Found yesterday, and it was awesome! We liked the cave inside the lost and found. One of our favorite parts was when they paddled across the steaming, gurgling lake. Those words were very interesting.

One of the hats that we found unique was the one that was spiky and "part-game, part-hat."

We were wondering how it was a game? How did you play the game? Also, how did the student make that terrific creation?

All of the lucky hats were incredible!

    From,
Your friends in Mr. Salsich's class

  18. Dear Royce,

I loved your hat. Could you add more
color to it? Still, I thought you had the coolest hat, and game I have ever seen, even though it made me a little dizzy :-).

    Madison

  19. Dear Mrs. Yollis and kids,

Our favourite hats were the spiky "part-game" hat, Panda's hat, the squid hat, and your hat, Mrs. Yollis.

One of our students wears cowboy hats - his whole family has one! - and he really loves Beverly's cowboy hat.

We really wonder how does the game of the "game hat" works?

    Your friends,

Miss. OC and LES's grade 2 and 3 class

  20. @ Mr.Salsich's class and Miss OC and LES grades 2 and 3,

My name is Royce and I am the person with the part-game part-hat. You were wondering about my hat and how I made it.

First, I got small pieces of paper and rolled them in a specific way so that it looks like a spike. I pasted them all over the front of the hat. Next, I took a huge piece of paper and made it into bin. I attached it upside down on the back of my hat. Third, I put random pieces of yarn all over it. Finally, I took a long piece of yarn and pasted it to the front of the bin. I attached a little ball of paper to the end of the piece of yarn. Some people whacked the ball like a tether ball. Mrs. Yollis tried to toss it into the spikes. If it stuck, she got a win.

A lot of people enjoyed playing the game and got to different levels.

Do you guys get lucky hat day?

Does Miss. OC and LES grades 2/3 read Mark Teague books?

    Sincerely,
    Royce and Acacia

Thank-you for writing back to us! We were excited to learn about your game/hat.

Sometimes we have a Crazy Hat day at our school, and we can wear all kinds of goofy hats. We also have Pyjama Day and Backwards day.

We have never read any Mark Teague books, but his Lost and Found book sounds really cool.

  27. Dear Mrs. Yollis,

I enjoyed looking at the pictures of everyone with their Lucky Hats. My favorite hat is the spiky hat because it looked like he grew mountains instead of hair!

In fourth grade there is no lucky hat day, but it still is fun for me to see other people in their hats. On lucky hat day, I saw someone who wore three hats and someone else that wore a huge birthday hat.

You asked what luck I had on lucky hat day. I got a good grade on Reading, spelling, and grammar. I also had good luck the day before.

Does any one know who were the people with the hats that I saw?

    From your former student,
    Amitai
