Happy Groundhog Day! • February 2

On February 2, Punxsutawney Phil comes out of his burrow at Gobbler's Knob in Pennsylvania.

Tradition says that:

If Punxsutawney Phil

sees his shadow... then winter weather will continue for six more weeks.

If Punxsutawney Phil

  1. Here in Texas, it is much colder than typical. I hope Punxsutawney Phil does NOT see his shadow! We love Spring weather in Texas. Right now, we cannot play at recess. We can only play outside when the temperature is above 40 degrees.

My class is inspired by your class blog. We are trying to follow the same guidelines for writing comments and launched a "Family Blogging Challenge" for the month of February.

Do you have an blogging tips for us?

  2. Dear Mrs. Yollis,

Wow, I can't beleive its already groundhog day! I hope Phil will not see his shadow because I want spring to start early.

A groundhog is a rodent that belongs to a group of large ground squirrels. Groundhogs live up to two to three years, but can live up to six years in the wildlife. Groundhogs are one of the species that go into hibernation, and often build a winter burrow.

Do you know any other facts about ground hogs?

    From,
    Miriam

  5. Dear Mrs Yollis and class,

Happy Groundhog Day! This is definitely a very American day. I had to do some research to find out what it was! I didn't even know that a groundhog was an animal! You guys teach me so much.

I remember seeing a movie a long time ago called Groundhog Day. On that day the same thing happened to the man over and over and over and over. It was very strange! I hope that doesn't happen to you today! :)

Punxsutawney Phil sounds very cute. Like Miriam, I hope he does not make his shadow for you. Warm weather is more fun!

I hope you will let us know what happens!

Has anyone is your class actually seen a groundhog before?

    Your pal,
    Mrs Morris

  6. I live in Northern New York (very close to the Canadian border) and it is VERY cold here! Let's hope Phil is right because the -20 degree weather were having is not very much fun! I haven't heard of any other ways of telling how soon spring will come.

I'm currently taking a graduate course on using technology in teaching literacy and found your blog. I think it's fantastic you have the kids blogging and am enjoying reading through the posts.

Had the students experienced blogging before your class?

  7. Dear Mrs. Yollis,
I think Punxsutawney Phil is cute. I also think he was right because it already feels like spring in California. But its still winter in alot of other places, so we will have to wait and see!
    Yours truly,
    Ben
