November is Family Blogging Month!

Mrs. Yollis and her students love to share what they are learning and experiencing. In an effort to include more family members in our online community, we are proclaiming:

November is Family Blogging Month!

Each student made a list of their family members. After looking through the archive, students selected specific posts tailored to the interest of a particular relative.

We're inviting everyone to comment:
moms, dads, brothers, sisters, grandmas, grandpas, uncles, aunts, and cousins. Even people who are not really relatives are invited.

Students will be inviting their family to participate in a conversation!
Maybe we'll get some 2-point comments!

Not sure HOW to comment on this blog? Here is a video tutorial!
Not sure WHAT to say? Here is a video tutorial!

Are you excited about Family Blogging Month?
Many families will be together with other relatives during Thanksgiving week recess!

Who will you invite to comment?

  1. Dear Mrs Yollis and students,

May you and your families and extended families have a wonderful Family Blogging Month!

I know that when Miss McGeady had her family blogging month BB's family loved having the wonderful experience of blogging on her class blog as well loved reading and getting to know her overseas blogger too.

Have fun and I will reading and I hope to comment too.
Best wishes to you all for blogging month from your friend down under AA.

  2. Dear Mrs. Yollis,

I am really surprised that April is not family blogging month like last year. Last year was really fun, and remember how Gal got the most last year. That was really cool.

I really miss having you as my teacher this year. I still remember sitting outside before we got in class in our boys and girls squares.

    Your friend,
    Nick

  3. Dear Mrs. Yollis,

I am very excited about family blogging month! I can't wait for my family members to comment on your blog. It will also be very exciting to read comments by other students' relatives!

I will ask my father who has never commented before, to comment on the "Are You an Expert" post. He is an expert skier and I think it would be interesting for him to comment about his skiing experience.

    Warm regards,
    Hannah★

  4. Dear Mrs Yollis and class,

It's great to see you are having a Family Blogging Month, I am sure you will get lots and lots of comments during November. In 2KJ we had Family Blogging Month during May, and 2KJ got exactly 500comments for the month. We thought that was fantastic!

I am sure everyone in Mrs Yollis' class will teach their family members how to write quality comments and hopefully you get some great blogging conversations going!

    Good luck with your challenge!

    Your friend,
    Miss Jordan

  5. Dear Mrs Yollis,

I am a Grade 5 teacher from Cape Town in South Africa.

Our class has a blog too. We are very proud of it but our commenting style is lacking in substance.

Thank you for this very pressionally done video. I will show it to all my students by linking it on our blog.

  6. Dear Miss Jordan,

Wow! We can not believe you and your class got to 500 comments! We think we will get a lot of comments too. We will try to teach our families how to blog...a two point comment maybe.

We have a couple questions for you:

How many people in your family?

Will you have another Family Blogging Month?

    Sincerely,

    Grace ♥

    Dear Miss Tyler Smith,

This is Adia and Hannah from Mrs. Yollis' class. That is terrific that you have a blog as well. Here are some tips for your class to help them become better commenters:

    1. Make sure to write a specific compliment.

    2. Add factual information.

    3. Try to make a connection with the blogger(s).

    4. Always end with a relevant question and try to get a conversation going.

    5. Don't forget to proofread!

We hope you enjoy our tips and use them.

    Warmly,

    Adia and Hannah★

  8. Dear Mrs. Yollis,

I am going to try to get a lot of people commenting. My mom, my dad, my three grandmas, my two grandpas, my aunt, my sister, and my brother will hopefully be commenting! This is a very exciting month! Unfortunately, all my relatives live in the suburb of Los Angeles so my family won't be able to add any international dots. Did you do family blogging month last year?

    From,
    Ryan

  9. Dear Mrs Yollis and class,

I am so excited about family blogging month. When I got the list home, I gave it to my mom so fast because I was pumped up about family blogging month.

This is a great project to get families to blog more.
Also, people from all over the world can blog with their families.

    Warmly,

    Gr♥ce

  10. Dear Mrs. Yollis and class,

I am so excited to do family blogging month. When I made the list of people, I picked what I really thought my parents would like the most. When I took the list home after school, I showed my parents the list and they thought they would post a comment.

My sisters might post a comment too.
If they do post a comment, I will be blown away because they have never posted a comment on the blog before.

I know that I am very excited to do family blogging month. Are you excited to do family blogging month?

    Warmly,

I have a question that anyone can answer:

Does anyone have any family members in a different continent?

  17. @ Grace and Iman - Thanks for the prompt reply! :)

I have five people in my family. I have my mum and dad, my sister Renee and my brother Luke. Mum, Dad and Luke (he's 16) live about three hours away from me, in a very small country town where I grew up. My sister (she's 25) is currently travelling overseas.

It is nearly the end of our school year, we finish just a few days before Christmas. I will have a new class of students when we come back to school in February. So, I won't have a Family Blogging Month again this year, but I am sure I will do it again in 2011 with my new class!

    Miss Jordan

  18. Dear Mrs. Yollis and students,

I am a student in Dr. Strange's EDM310 class at the University of South Alabama in Mobile, Alabama.

I think it is wonderful to have family month. It's great to allow family members of your students to get involved. I would like if my EDM class let our families get involved with our blogging experience.

Though we don't get to have a family month in EDM, we get to comment on great blogs like your own. That is one of my favorite things to do. I wish you all the best of luck with family month and future blogging!

    Your new friend,
    Nicole

  19. Dear Mrs. Yollis and students,

I believe this is a great idea. It is a great way to get family and friends to get involved in the students education. It is also good thing for the students because they like the feedback they get from their family members.
I have problems coming up with good, substantial comments. So, this was a very helpful post. I would love to know how Family Blogging Month turns out.
I am commenting on this blog as an assignment under Dr. Strange's EDM310 class at University of South Alabama. Feel free to contact me at My Blog

  20. @ Nicole,

Thanks so much for visiting the blog! We love Family Blogging Month because it brings the family in and I think that enhances the learning. We end up getting many grandparents as participants which is great!

    @ Leslie,

Thank you, too, for visiting! You mentioned that you have trouble coming up with substantial comments and that the post helped. We are glad about that! We encourage all bloggers to end a post with a few questions to get readers thinking and participating.

I think you both have an outstanding teacher in Dr. Strange. His technology class introduces future teachers to the tech skills necessary in today's classroom. Good luck with your studies!

    Sincerely,
    Mrs. Y♥llis

  21. Dear Mrs. Yollis and Students,

I am a student in Dr. Strange's EDM310 class at the University of South Alabama. I simply adore the idea of Family Blogging Month! Not only is it a quality way to get family members involved in the education of their student, it is a way for the adults to learn how to blog and give positive feedback. Wonderful idea!

  22. Dear Mrs. Yollis and Students,

I am also a student in Dr. Stranges class. I think it is awesome that family members of your students can see what a class blog is all about, and for them to be able to comment on all of the posts and interact with all of the students, including yourself, is wonderful. I hope that November creates great results for your blog. Also, I hope all of the parents and relatives will learn just as much as the students have by just being a part of this.

Good luck with your great idea.

    Sincerely
    Cole

I am Josh King, and a student in Dr. Strange's EDM310 class at the University of South Alabama.

There's not a better month than November for family blogging. Actually, I have some of my family following my blogs. I love it when they leave comments because it shows how much they care about me. It is also a huge motivation for me to keep working hard!

This is my first time visiting your blog. I love it, especially all the pictures and videos! I will be commenting more!

    Keep up the good work,

  25. Hello Mrs. Yollis and Class,

I'm thrilled to learn that my nephew, Andrew Levin, is learning to blog. As a soon-to-be Ph.D. in Media Psychology, I understand the value of social media in the classroom. My mentor, Bernard Luskin, wrote a wonderful book called Casting the Net Over Global Learning that may be useful to you all.

    Cheers to Family Blogging Month!

  27. Dear Mrs. Y♥llis,

Wow! You sure know how to make learning fun for our lucky third graders!

This afternoon I watched my son, Amitai participate in the UGB Conference with you, Mrs. Harding, several classmates and educators from all over the globe! What an awesome experience! What a fantastic way to bring the world together through learning!

In the three months that our kids have been in school, you have encouraged them to learn about and exchange information with other students, teachers and relatives in five different continents through your classroom blog. What a great way to learn so many different subjects at once!

Thank you for making learning so exciting!

    Sincerely,

    Rebecca (Amitai's Mom)

  28. Dear Iman,

What a great comment! I would like to answer your question: Yes, I do have many family members in a different continent. One of them recently visited California during the summer.

The continent that I have family members is in Asia. The country is Iran.

My cousin who came over during summer break was really fun to play with, though there sometimes were ups and downs.

For example, we were playing in the pool and sadly, she pulled my hair, jumped on me, and bit me. :-(

Sometimes, it is hard to have a relative over, but next time I know, I should be absolutely careful.

It was a little hard to get to know her because it was my first time to actually meet her but soon we got perfectly along with each other and we ended up hugging when she left to go back to Iran.

I hope to soon have her visit again.

    Sincerely,
    Adia

  29. Dear Mrs. Yollis,

I love the wonderful idea of family blogging month! It is great that all our relatives and friends can get to comment on the blog.

I have already asked my dad, mom, and brother to comment and hope to soon have my grandparents and cousin do it also. I have a feeling they will enjoy learning to blog! :-)

Throughout the months when I started to learn to blog, I ♥ed it. You are a great blogging teacher and now because of you I am becoming a better blogger each day.

You know, I think the idea of Family Blogging Month is great, because it inspires our relatives to learn about blogging and how to do it.

I hope you have a wonderful Thanksgiving. May you have a lot of great food and have a wonderful pumpkin pie.

    Your student,

  31. Dear Mrs. Yollis,

I am thrilled that my grand daughter, Ileanna, is part of your blog world, and is being exposed to the power and potential of the Internet.

Years ago, when Internet technology was initially
developed for national security purposes, very few foresaw how rapidly creative teachers, like you, would harness it for the benefit of children the world over.

I am certain the pioneers of this field are extremely gratified by your collective efforts.

Do you discuss the evolution of the Internet in your classroom?

    Sincerely,

    Bada

  32. Dear Mrs. Yollis,

I have been wondering about blogging for quite sometime. I think it is a great way to keep up with your class and to find out all that is going on at school. Your student's video has made commenting very simple for those of us who are not entirely comfortable with the computer.

I think Ileanna will be surprised that I am doing this.

  35. Dear Mrs. Yollis,

For the Family Blogging Month 2012, we have over ONE HUNDRED comments! The 2010 Family Blogging Month did not have a lot of comments like the 2012 Family Blogging Month.

My brother was in the class of 2010. I left a comment on your blog when I was only in kindergarten. Of course, my mom helped me type it. This year, I don't even need my mom to help me on anything. Actually, my mom NEEDS to proofread the comment.

This year I tried to get my whole family to comment, but I got my mom, Echo, brother, Aaron, my dog, Rocky, and me to comment. Rocky only left one on Busy Buck. It was about Buck helping correct papers, digging a hole to China, and playing with his toy chicken. My brother left some comments on Time Square and other math posts. My mom only left a few comments on Grandma's Special Sweaters. I left a lot on many posts. What post did you like the most?

    Warmly,
    Heather
